Activity Title: Manipulating Basic Block Pattern for Children’s Wear
I. Introductory Concept
There are many pattern drafting techniques you can use in turning your basic block into a
stunning fashion; there are a few basics techniques that you'll use again and again. In this lesson,
you are going to focus on changing the shape of pattern from basic/block to final pattern.
There are two most commonly used methods of pattern drafting
techniques:
1. Manipulating darts, to move them where ever
you want them or change them into attractive
shaping seams.
2. "Slashing and Spreading" your pattern to add fullness in the
sleeve, skirt, or anywhere that you don't want a fitted look.
Sleeve
With these 2 basic pattern drafting techniques, you can
achieve ANY shape you desire.
1. Want a full sleeve? Slash and spread!
2. Want a skirt with a yoke at the waist? Move the waist darts.
Once you learn what you can do by manipulating darts and slashing your patterns, you'll
come up with design ideas you'd never thought of.
Manipulating of Pattern
From this basic/block pattern, we are going to
manipulate the pattern to make it one – piece children’s
wear. Follow given procedure .

Needed Measurement
1. Full Length – measure from the shoulder to desired length.
Procedure for One – Piece Children’s Wear
1. Extend the line from point A downward.
2. A – L Measure the length of a dress.
3. L –M measure your desired fullness of skirt or ¼ of Waist
measurements plus 3’’
4. Square or draw horizontal line from point L.
5. Connect K to M using straight line.
Note: You can change the neckline from Round to V - neck .
How to make the pattern for the Puff SLEEVES:
1. Use the foundation pattern as base.
2. Make slashes from top to bottom.
3. Spread the slashes according to the desired fullness.
4. Add 3 cm. from A upward.
5. Trace the sleeve with the flared effect from point A upward .Then, add the desired allowances.
Note: Use only pencil while doing the task, do not use any permanent marker, the purpose of this
is for instruction purposes only.
