CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

This chapter will provide the readers a glance of the entire

contents of this research and how the researchers will solve the problem.

INTRODUCTION

Music is a very important part of our lives as it is a way of expressing

our feelings as well as emotions. Some people consider music as a way to

escape from the pain and suffering of life. It gives us relief, allows us to

reduce stress, helps clear the mind, and enables focus on studying.

Students’ stress level gets high every semester. Some students find

this as the perfect time to listen to kinds of music that will help to calm down

their minds from school works. Music is an effective stress reducer yet, other

students find it hard to concentrate on studying while they are listening to

music. Listening to music is useful thus, it also has a negative impact on

some students that can lead them to be affected in their academic

performance.
2

The aim of this research is to know the psychological effects of

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter consists of Foreign Literature, Local Literature,

Foreign Studies, and Local Studies.

FOREIGN LITERATURES

Listening to music can be entertaining, and some research

suggests that it might even make you healthier. Music can be a source of

pleasure and contentment, but there are many other psychological benefits as

well. Music can relax the mind, energize the body, and even help people

better manage pain. (Cherry, 2019)

As stated in the literature of Marketing Team (2019), basically,

music helps your brain function. Background music may enhance

performance on cognitive tasks. Whether or not music improves cognitive

function depends on whether the music first improves a person’s emotional

state. If you want to improve brain performance while studying, evidence

now shows that you must first improve your emotional state by listening to
8
music that you enjoy.

In addition, according to Davis (2015), background music may

improve focus on a task by providing motivation and improving your brain

functions and mood. During long study sessions, music can aid endurance.
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

One of the most compelling reasons to listen to music during a study session

is because music is proven to help improve cognitive performance.

Moreover, Segaren (2019) stated that distraction is one of the

things a student doesn’t require when studying. Achieving full attention or

focus is challenging for a student. It is much harder when they are

researching for an extended period. They will tend to forget or have a change

in their mood. Hence, if you want to increase your focus while reading,

ensure that you listen to soothing music. With that, you will read for a long

time and understand all that you learn more straightforwardly.

Background music is likely to help students improve their focus

during long study sessions as it can help with memorization – a somewhat

debatable idea that is the basis of “the Mozart effect” which suggested that

listening to Mozart study music could actually enhance intelligence. Study

music is considered to be beneficial for the intake of vital information.

Consequently, any music of a high bpm, angry or intense nature tends to do

the complete opposite. (“Does music helps students study?”, 2018)

9

However, Segaren (2019) also stated that students who use music

to help them memorize often find it hard to recall the information later as the

test is taken in a silent environment. Information recall has been proven to be

more effective when it’s done in a similar environment like the one it was

memorized in. Therefore, students who prefer studying in a quiet

environment benefit more when it comes to recalling information later on a

test.

LOCAL LITERATURES

As stated by, Marie de Pona’s St. Jude Training Center (2020),

music is an integral part of everyday Filipino life. In any occasion, in any

house, or in any event in the Philippines, music will never be missing.

Various studies state that it has numerous benefits to health. Some of these

are that music help strengthen learning and memory, reduces pain, and raises

IQ and academic performance. Music also proven that it affects mental

health and can reduce stress, depression and ease anxiety.

Some studies conclude that listening to music before doing an

assignment can be beneficial; aside from enhancing one’s mental math abilities,

it also improves attention and memory – two things that are essential when

studying. In addition to that, it can lessen anxiety and depression as well.

10

Music also affects your productivity. Some studies say that music

positively affects people’s mood, motivating them to be more productive.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, this does not apply to everyone. While

Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

listening to music can improve one student’s concentration, another might find

it distracting. (Mapua, 2016)

Likewise, Reymarie M. Mabborang-Caban (2016) investigated

that learners in order to have a positive attitude towards their subjects, should

develop a great deal of attention and listening ability. These factors

contribute effectively in the learning process. Undoubtedly, songs help

enhance these skills which reinforce learning. Considering a song’s power to

motivate and to develop active listening and involvement which lead to

greater attention could favorably change students’ attitude toward their

subject. They are wonderful tools in enhancing long-term memory and for

memorizing materials. Music will touch students on an extremely personal

level, all the while enhancing memory. The information that is meaningful or

emotionally charged is then, of course, more likely to be remembered. In this

sense, it could be said that songs help learners retain new information,

likewise, to have a greater achievement.

FOREIGN STUDY 11

Music can be generalized as type of genre such as Pop, Rock,

Classical, R&B, Country, Jazz/Blues, Hip-Hop, Modern Folk, Electronic,

Asian, Comedy, Caribbean and Latin American music. Engagement with music
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

can create positive and lasting effects on brain function. Emily reviewed the

literature on the varied use of music in classrooms and concluded that children

were productive and less stressed when background music was played in the

classroom. (Szentgyorgyi, 2015)

Otmar Bock in his study tried to evaluate whether the whether the so-

called Mozart Effect‘ extends beyond cognitive tasks and includes sensory

motor adaptation. His findings support the existence of a ―Mozart effect for

strategic movement control. Possibly, listening to music modifies neural

activity in an intertwined cognitive–emotional network. (Otmar Bock, 2017)

12

According to the University of Phoenix, listening to music with lyrics

can be distracting while you read, study, and write. The study found that your

brain can struggle to process musical lyrics and do school work simultaneously.

Doing these two actions at once is considered multi-tasking and research has

found that multitasking can decrease your IQ by ten points. In addition to this

study researchers at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff, United

Kingdom found that students were able to study more efficiently in quiet

environments than in environments with music playing. (Emily M. Hernberg,

2015)
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department 12

Otherwise, music can be a distraction- under certain circumstances.

The research is fairly clear that when there’s music in the background, and

especially music with vocals, our working memory gets worse. Likely as a

result, reading comprehension decreases when people listen to music with

lyrics. Music also appears to be more distracting for people who are

introverts than for people who are extroverts, perhaps because introverts are

more easily overstimulated. (Byron, 2019)

Moreover, according to Serpil Umuzdas (2015), external factors

including listening to music should be controlled and avoided while reading,

trying to comprehend, thinking and interpreting. He suggested that if music is

listened to improperly, there are two negative effects on focusing on the topic.

Firstly, allocating time for listening to music reduces the time spent for

studying. It is mostly common among younger learners. Secondly, listening to

music while reading inhibits the individuals’ critical reading skills and deeper

understanding of text.

Umuzdas also stated that if the music listened to while studying is

a relaxing one, it leads to affective harmony and does not cause shift of

interest. However, if the rhythm is changed frequently, then the music is

focused on rather than reading or learning.

Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department 13

LOCAL STUDY

Music is an art that gives pleasure and entertainment, soothes

anxiety and gives calmness on the human brain through meditation but too loud

or too jarring music distracts and may compete with attention.

Music increased the productivity of the students. It also helps the

students to have more focus on their tasks. By perception, music also helped the

students in some academic areas including visual memorization, improved

phonemic awareness, and helped in reading and writing skills. (Desserie T.

Maynes-Blanco & Mecmack A. Nartea, 2020)

Moreover, Evangelista, et al., (2020) stated that their previous

work on the use of background music suggests conflicting results in various

psychological, behavioral, and educational measures.  findings suggest that

the presence or absence of classical background music do not affect stress,

anxiety, and knowledge scores.
