Risks of the Dark Web Explained

The informative speech discusses the Dark Web and its potential dangers. It begins by recounting an experience where a YouTuber received threats after streaming himself surfing the Dark Web. It then reveals that the Dark Web lies within the Deep Web, which comprises 99% of internet content that can't be indexed by search engines. Research from academic journals is presented on how the Dark Web functions anonymously through specialized browsers and cryptocurrency, leading it to be used for illegal markets like drugs and weapons. The conclusion warns of the risks of accidentally revealing private information and viruses while on the Dark Web.

Informative Speech on the “Dark Web”

Specific Purpose: Inform my audience on the Dark Web’s existence and its potential dangers.

Thesis: I will invite you to assess the risks associated with the Dark Web and its existence within
the internet. In addition to consider its significance and the role it plays within internet culture.

Introduction

Attention: One night, I was watching a Youtuber I was fond of, Etika. He was streaming himself
surfing the Dark Web, and reacting to the atrocities and disturbing content that it contained. For
the morbidly curious, it was a fun enjoyable experience… until the next day, he received a phone
call from an unknown number threatening him. It said: “I know where you are.” He was visibly
shaken up, as he kept his phone number & address private and has been extremely careful not
revealing anything publicly. That’s when I realized I underestimated the severity of the Dark
Web.

Reveal Topic: Life for millennials and generation Z has fused with existence on the internet. Yet
very little people know of the Dark web. The Dark Web is a network, that lies within something
called the Deep Web. What that essentially means, is that it can’t be indexed or searched through
any search engine. The Conference Board of Canada reported that the Deep Web covers a fast
amount of the internet, things like private business, academic institutions, governments have
their place on the Deep Web. In fact, in your mind right now guess how much of the internet is
made up of the “Deep Web.” Let a guess formulate in your mind. It’s 99%.

Credibility: I decided to conduct research through the UVIC academic journal database and
found some information, there was a compendium of articles that I managed to organize and
condense here.

Preview: Now that I’ve researched this topic, I’ll share with you some of my findings, and finally
invite you to mentally weigh the risks, and understand the format of the Dark Web.

Body

1. The book “Hands-on Dark Web Analysis” by Retzkin explained that separate discrete
networks layer the Deep Web, only accessible to specifically designed browsers and software.
This makes the IP addresses that connect to the Deep Web untraceable.

2. Those who access the Dark Web can surf and post anonymously, naturally leading it to be a
cyber space for criminals. Ozkaya & Islam, in their book: “Inside the Dark Web” documented
massive online markets that specialize in selling illegal materials and services are extensive on
the Dark web, things like selling drugs, weapons, and even assassinations. The transactions are
done through cryptocurrency, so yet again it is untraceable. The most commonly used, and
strongest cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, where 1B lists at 59 thousand Canadian dollars.
3. Despite your access being private- newcomers can accidentally give away their information,
either through a phishing site or a virus that is commonly present on the web. This is one of the
major dangers that can befall you, even things such as changing the size of your browser window
can give away your location. (Source: Tors Browser)

Conclusion

Summary: We have discussed what the Dark Web is, how it functions under the Deep Web, and
what its purpose is. You now know the potential risks that are highly probable under navigation
of the Dark Web. If you find yourself in a circumstance going into the Dark Web, or have a
friend that is, this small speech can be the first step in keeping you safe and private on the
internet.

Closing: The chances are, everyone listening to this connects to the internet every single day. I
hoped that this speech helped inform you of another section of the internet that isn’t widely
discussed.

Cryptocurrencies play a crucial role in the Dark Web by facilitating untraceable financial transactions, which are pivotal for operating online markets that sell illegal goods and services. The use of strong cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, valued at 59 thousand Canadian dollars, underscores their significance in enabling anonymous and secure transactions on the Dark Web .

Media portrayal often emphasizes the Dark Web's risks and involvement in criminal activities, influencing public perception to focus primarily on its negative aspects. This portrayal can instill fear and curiosity, yet might also foster an incomplete understanding, overshadowing legitimate uses and the necessity for measured engagement with this part of the internet .

Accessing and exploring the Dark Web raises significant ethical implications due to its facilitation of criminal activities under the guise of anonymity. While it holds a space for potential legal uses, the prevalent illegal content and services challenge moral responsibilities, necessitating a critical assessment of one's reasoning for accessing such platforms and considering the broader societal impacts .

Individuals can implement several strategies to safely explore the Deep Web by using verified access points and tools, maintaining strong digital hygiene, and employing comprehensive cybersecurity measures. This includes avoiding unfamiliar links, using reliable VPN services, and being critically aware of content accessed to minimize exposure to the pitfalls of the Dark Web .

Newcomers risk compromising their security on the Dark Web through phishing sites or viruses that can capture their personal information. Preventative measures include maintaining heightened awareness about phishing attempts and avoiding any actions that might inadvertently reveal their location, such as altering browser window sizes .

Access to the Dark Web is achieved through specific browsers and software that conceal users' IP addresses, promoting anonymity. This contributes to untraceable internet activity, significantly impacting law enforcement's ability to trace illicit actions while also protecting legitimate privacy needs, creating a complex dynamic between personal freedom and cyber security .

It is critical for millennials and Generation Z to be informed about the Dark Web because their lives are deeply interconnected with the internet. This awareness helps them understand the potential dangers, such as privacy invasions and exposure to illegal activities, ultimately guiding them in navigating the online world safely .

Anonymity on the Dark Web contributes to criminal activities by allowing users to surf and post without revealing their identities, making it an ideal environment for illegal activities. This includes extensive online markets selling drugs, weapons, and illicit services, often facilitated by untraceable transactions through cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin .

The Deep Web, covering 99% of the internet, encompasses private information from businesses, academic institutions, and governments. Its vastness implies significant challenges for internet security and privacy, as it includes both sensitive information and platforms like the Dark Web, where anonymity can be exploited for illegal purposes. This necessitates robust security measures and awareness to protect sensitive data within this largely unindexed space .

The potential dangers of accessing the Dark Web include anonymity which encourages criminal activities such as selling drugs, weapons, and illegal services. Moreover, even though access is private, there are risks like phishing attacks or malware that can expose personal information, such as location, to malicious attackers .
