DECEMBER 2014

QUESTION 1

a)i) Population – 350 students from Aleem College

Sample – 10 students from each faculty of Aleem College

a)ii) Sampling method – Stratified sampling

a)iii) Qualitative variable – Gender / Type of books

Quantitative variable – Age / Monthly expenditure on books

b)i) Descriptive

b)ii) Inferential

b)iii) Descriptive

c)i) P = 345/10 = 34.5

Q = 36
R = 34 – 8 = 26
S = 25
T = 34

c)ii) Most of the housewives from town area spend 36 hours in a week to watch television.

c)iii) Skewness (Rural) = (20.5-20) / 9.301 = 0.0537. This means that the number of hours spent to
watch television is skewed to the right (or almost symmetric) OR

skewness (Rural) = 3(20.5-20) / 9.301 = 0.161. This means that the number of hours spent to
watch television is skewed to the right (or almost symmetric)

c)iv) CV (Town) = (6.133 / 34.5) * 100 = 17.78%

CV (Rural) = (9.301 / 20.5) * 100 = 45.37%

Town housewives are more consistent in the number of hours spent to watch television since its
CV is smaller.

QUESTION 3
s 17.6038
a)i) P = Standard error of mean =   3.8415
n 21

Q + 420 = lower limit of the CI for single mean. Therefore,

s
Q  420  x  t  ,n1
2 n
 407.6143 - t 0.01,19 (3.8415 )
 407.6143 - 2.539 3.8415 
 397.8607
 Q  - 22.1393

a)ii) H0: µ = 420

H1: µ ≠ 420
P-value = 0.004
Reject H0 since p-value < α (0.01)
There is enough evidence that the average performance is significantly different from 420.

b)i) Test statistic = mean diff / std. error mean = (129.42-129.70) / 1.23 = -0.23

b)ii) H0: µd = 0
H1: µd > 0

b)iii) P-value = 0.822 / 2 = 0.411

Do not reject H0 since p-value > α (0.05)
There is no enough evidence to conclude that the new arrow release is an improvement over
the old arrow.

b)iv) 95% CI for the mean difference = (-2.76, 2.20)

b)v) Based on the CI in iv), there is no significant difference in the mean score between old and new
arrow since 0 is in the interval. In other words, there is no improvement in the score when the
new arrow was used. Therefore, this support the result produced in iii).

QUESTION 4

a)i) A = 281 – 134 = 147

B = 285 – 81.1 – 136.4 = 67.5 OR B = (139 * 285) / 587 = 67.5
C = (r-1)(c-1) = (3-1)(2-1) = 2

a)ii) H0: Level of support does not vary according to age (not related)
H1: Level of support varies according to age (related)

a)iii) P-value = 0.293

Do not reject H0 since p-value > α (0.05)
Level of support does not vary according to age

QUESTION 5

a) There is a positive linear relationship between earnings and sales of the company.

b) Independent variable – Sales

Dependent variable – earnings

c) SSXY = 1508.596
SSXX = 10478.372
SSYY = 245.7255

SS XY 1508 .596
r   0.940
SS XXSS YY (10478 .372)(245.7255 )

There is a strong positive linear relationship between earnings and sales of the company.

d) r2 = 0.884. Therefore, 88.4% of the total variation in earnings is explained by sales.

e) Coefficient of determination.

f) A = y-intercept

A
 y  b  x  129.3  0.144 977.6   0.574
n n 20  20 

g) y = -0.574 + 0.144x
Slope = 0.144 means when sales increase by RM1000 (RM1 x 1000), earnings will increase by
RM144 (0.144 x 1000).

h) y = -0.574 + 0.144(56) = 7.49

Therefore, when sales is RM56000, earnings will be RM7490.
