Bonaire National Marine Park Case Study
A. Demonstration of effective sustainable management:
Bonaire Island managed to sustain their destination by hiring trained personnel and fund
workshops, volunteer programs and other staffing requirements. Creating a committee with
representatives from tourism sector and other sources. Bonaire has been funded by the Dutch
government on revitalization of the park in three years. After that, Bonaire has been re-
established and become an self-financing as the admission required within the term of the
grant. They gathered funds from the fee of every tourist worth of 10 US dollars to cover
operating cost. Bonaire still managed to bring the quality of life demands of the inhabitants and
the quality of opportunity requirements of the organizations as far as possible. In terms of
managing the plan, it was advised that it should be always reviewed and updated also the
specific groups or people that are involved must be indicated.
B. Maximizing social and economic benefits to the local community and minimizing negative
impacts:
The number of tourist arrival was increased in Bonaire Island due to its popular activities. In
that case the island must developed infrastructure such as hotel, accommodations and lodges.
Those lodges will provide jobs to the people locally and gives opportunity to those business
minded person to have their small business such as souvenirs shops. Also having a public
relations, communication and cooperation with stakeholders through different forms of media
is one way to promote the island. Overall result is the increasing rate of the economic growth
that will benefit the local community.
C. Maximizing benefits of cultural heritage and minimizing negative impacts:
Culture is still an important part of Bonaire’s community. They preserve cultural heritage by
holding a program, conducting an event centered on the traditions and old crafts of the
Bonaire. People gets to enjoy and experience the authenticity of Bonaire because speakers are
free to share their crafts and other activities with visitors. In that case they still managed to
protect it and handle visitors behaviour and give awareness to them on how much they valued
their culture.

D. Maximizing benefits to the environment and minimizing negative impacts:
Bonaire Island has developed and monitor the nature and marine conservation activities. They
hire police patrol to ensure the law abiding community especially with the nature ordinances.
To prevent the risk that might happen to the coral reefs surrounding Bonaire they come up in
managing the plan to ensure that the reefs and other marine resources are protected from land
based impacts.
