3 Function Description

3.1 BMS Functions for Battery Unit

When the battery unit is powered on, the Battery Management System (BMS)
monitors the system conditions in real-time. For example, the following is
monitored:

— Cell voltage

— Battery unit voltage

— Battery unit circuit current

— Battery unit temperature

The BMS also controls solid state relays to protect the system from over-
charging, over-discharging, over-current, over-temperature, and other fault
operations.

The BMS monitors and controls battery functions to ensure that the battery unit
operates in a safe, reliable, and efficient way.

The BMS generates alarms if abnormal conditions occur during system operation.

4.2 Installation Recommendations for Battery Unit

The battery unit can be installed in a rack with guide rails. Mounting brackets are
used for attaching the battery unit to the rack, while the guide rails carry the
weight of the unit.

1 U of free space is required between the battery units.

Screws for rack mounting are not included in the accessory kit and must be
ordered separately.

4.3 Space Requirements for Battery Unit

The battery units require 1 U space between each other when installed in a
multiple configuration.

4.4 Load Current Dimensioning for Battery Unit

Compared to lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries have a well defined
maximum current during discharge. As the load is traffic dependent, it is
important to have a safe margin between the peak load and the maximum
allowed current through the battery unit. For lithium-ion batteries, it is
recommended that the maximum average load is less than half the maximum

Technical Data

current rating of the battery unit. If multiple battery units are used, the maximum
current rating decreased to 80% of the single-battery maximum current rating.

4.5 Environmental Characteristics for Battery Unit

The battery unit environment must be clean, dry, and ventilated, with no
conductive dust or corrosive gas.

7 Cable Connections

This section gives an overview of the cabling in a battery unit system. For
detailed cabling instructions, refer to the relevant enclosure or power system
installation instruction.

7.1 Grounding Cable Connections

The battery units are grounded through the mounting brackets when installed in
a rack.

Each battery unit has a connection point for a grounding cable. The grounding
cable is connected between the battery unit and the grounding point in the
enclosure or rack.

The battery unit grounding cable is connected to a grounding point. The figure
shows multi-point grounding of battery units connected to a grounding point. If
the battery unit is installed with mounting brackets in a rack that is connected to
ground, no separate ground connection is needed.

8 Maintenance

This section describes general maintenance of the battery unit.

8.1 Preventive Maintenance

If possible, keep the operating ambient environment temperature between +15
and +35°C.

Before cleaning the battery unit, the power must be switched off and the battery
unit must be in power-off state. Do not rinse the battery unit with water.

To clean the battery unit, use a dry cloth, vacuum cleaning, or compressed air.

8.2 EOL Management

The battery unit is designed for 10 years service life in standard operation.

Transportation and Storage

9 Transportation and Storage

This section describes the transportation and storage aspects of the battery unit
from the warehouse up to the time for installation at site.

Because of the characteristics of the battery unit, the environmental conditions

during transportation and storage must be met, to keep the performance of the
battery unit. The battery unit can be stored in a temperature between −20°C and
+50°C, with a recommended storage temperature of +25°C. At a storage
temperature of +40°C, storage time is decreased by 50%.

Never install battery blocks that have been dropped; it can cause visible or
invisible damages that may appear after some time.

Keep the battery unit away from water and condensation. Liquid entering the
battery unit can cause short circuits, electricity leakage, and connector corrosion.
Moist air entering the battery unit must be avoided. If the battery unit is exposed
to water or condensation, it must be considered faulty and is not to be used. Keep
the battery unit in humidity between 5% and 95%.

If the battery unit is stored for a longer period of time, it must be charged
regularly.

For detailed information regarding transportation and storage of lithium-ion

batteries, as well as safety and fire-fighting measures, refer to Manage Batteries.
