Argumentative Essay

The document discusses the topic of whether school principals should consult with students on matters affecting their lives. It presents arguments on both sides of the issue. On one hand, consulting with students could teach them a growth mindset and encourage positive speaking. However, some experts argue that students may be more comfortable opening up to a guidance counselor due to their specialized training in dealing with student emotions and struggles. Ultimately, the document concludes that both options have merits, and it is best for students to have the opportunity to speak to more than one trusted person, depending on their individual comfort levels.

Topic: School principals should consult with the student body on ALL
matters affecting the lives of students
WORD COUNT: 654

I strongly believe that there is no way to proceed in a case like this

that involves the aspects and concerns of the student body and their
opinions. There are many advantages and disadvantages of dealing
with this scenario. My arguing points will now discuss the complexity
of dealing with this topic.

On one hand, A study showed that one of the main advantages is

teaching and promoting a good growth mindset. The principal can talk
with the students on how to push and overcome tasks and challenges
in their everyday life, not only dealing with school work, while
pushing positively towards growth. This is more focused more on
specific problems that a student or individual may face and
overcoming that problem with hope and a lesson learned. The
principal should also help them see the value in the process and in
the learning, while they learn to apply the growth mindset to a number
of other areas in their lives.

Along the same lines, I have a friend who’s dad is a teacher and the
principal of that school talks about “positive speaking” the principal
usually says “whether you’re learning something, working on a
project or talking about the weekend, using positive language and
positive thinking and speaking will go such a long way with their
school life and outside life”. He usually says speaking positively can
radically boost a child's life. Even if they already have positive
influences in their lives, they’ll know that you can be trusted to
encourage them and guide them with any help they require.

On the contrary, Mr. Vishnu Ramsaroop, one of the highest rated

psychiatrists in the country stated that children are faster to talk to
the guidance counselor than a principal or a teacher. They feel more
connected and open in the moment because the guidance counselor
knows how to speak and operate around the children. While the
principal won’t know much of the emotions or struggles they carry.
Students know what to say around the guidance counselor because
she/he knows how to get them to open up, the principal really doesn’t
know that.” He stated. He also said that no teacher or principal won’t
understand the emotions or struggles they go through cause they
aren’t really “specialised” in the category of talking to students in that
form, while the guidance counselor is.

Despite the guidance counselor knowing how to talk to students and

be more attentive towards them, students may not be open or brave
enough to talk to the principal about certain matters, they may feel
scared or threatened cause they know it’s not really his job to “talk”
to students in a manner, they know his job is really meant to motivate
and encourage students to work towards their goals, and they also
assume that the principal is “strict”. Students may also feel
uncomfortable with talking to him since some of them have no
experience with it and may also feel ashamed. They will also get the
thought of the principal quarreling with them. Another thing is that the
students will feel “more confident” around the guidance counselor
instead of the principal.
“Will you let the students talk to someone they aren’t comfortable
with” ? Or “Will you let them talk with someone they are comfortable
with” ? Children's brain receptors make them respond quicker to
people who make them feel safe and cared and loved.

To sum this up, after examining each of the advantages and

disadvantages, it is clear that none of them surpass each other, they
each have their valid points and reasons as to why they are good and
bad. In other words, it is good for you to talk to more than one person,
but it’s bad if you aren’t comfortable or brave enough to do it.
