TEJ2O1 - Computer CPU Project: 1. Learn How To Compare CPU's
When building your own computer the most important decision you will have to make is which
CPU you will buy. For many years the choice was relatively simple, Intel CPU’s dominated the
market and choosing a CPU was easy. In 2017 AMD changed everything when they introduced their
Ryzen series. Now in their 3rd generation, Ryzen CPU’s are now a worthy alternative to Intel's i
series of CPU’s.
This assignment will help you understand how to research CPU’s so that you can make an
informed decision when it comes to choosing either an AMD or Intel processor for your computer
build. You will use this information to determine which manufacturer has the best value for a mid
level computer CPU.
1. List the 2 main factors that make a major difference in a CPU’s performance.
Higher clock speeds and core counts can make a major difference in a CPU’s performance.
5. When taking into account your total computer build budget what 3 other main computer
parts must be paired with the CPU to make sure your computer’s performance isn’t held
back? RAM, Graphics Card, SSD.
6. Which range of AMD Ryzen / Intel I series does the article recommend for gaming? AMD:
Ryzen 5 Intel: Core i5 Why can these be a better choice than a high end CPU? Because you
don’t need a high end CPU for mutual/casual gaming.
7. Which CPU series is recommended for a video editing Computer? Ryzen 7. How important Is
the CPU’s number of cores when considering video editing performance? For video editing,
more cores means that you have more processing power which translates into faster video
performance.
9. List 2 types of software that Intel’s Core X or AMD Threadripper CPU’s would be most suitable
for? Two types of software that Intel’s Core X or AMD Thread ripper CPU’s would be
most suitable for are Cinema 4D and Premiere Pro.
10. Each year or so, Intel and AMD upgrade their processor lines with a new architecture. The
current generation for Intel is the 11th Generation Core Series, AMD's latest chips are in their
9th Generation.
11. Overclocking is a way of speeding up your CPU to achieve higher performance for free.
Some CPU’s are locked at the factory and can’t be overclocked. How can you tell by looking
at an Intel CPU’s name whether it is overclockable or not? Essentially, there are two types of
Intel processors – non overclocked versions, and the K or X variant, which is overclockable.
For example, I have the Intel I7-7700K, which is overclockable. The I7-7700, on the other
hand, isn't overclockable.
12. Why do you need to know what the TDP (Thermal Design Power) for a CPU is? The TDP
number tells you the maximum heat a computer chip, such as a CPU or GPU, can use in watts.
It also is often used as a basic indicator of power consumption. More watts equals better
performance, but also higher temperatures and more power consumption.
13. Why is the amount of CPU cache important? Cache memory is important because it improves
the efficiency of data retrieval. It stores program instructions and data that are used repeatedly
in the operation of programs or information that the CPU is likely to need next.
14. IPC (instructions per clock cycle) is the most important CPU specification but it is very
difficult to compare and rarely given as a specification. How if the the calculation of IPC
done? The calculation of IPC is done through running a set piece of code, calculating the
number of machine-level instructions required to complete it, then using high-performance
timers to calculate the number of clock cycles required to complete it on the actual hardware.
15. Where do you find the best information in regards to how CPU’s compare to each other?
The easiest and best way is to head to CPUBoss. This site compares two processors and gives
ratings and explains the differences between the two in terms that any non-techie can also

C. Benchmarks (2 marks).
Copy/edit/paste 1 gaming and 1 video editing benchmark that compares both CPU’s with
each other ( benchmark may also show other CPU’s). Example:
