PHET: Electricity & Magnetism

This document contains a 3-part PhET simulation on electricity and magnetism. In part 1, the document explores charges on balloons and walls. Part 2 examines charging a man's finger and the resulting shocks. Part 3 involves an electric hockey game to explore how charge setups can be used to score goals. Key concepts covered include positive and negative charges attracting or repelling, the movement of charges in conductors when nearby objects are charged, and how charge setups can direct the movement of objects in an electric field.

PHET: Electricity & Magnetism Name_____Amanuel Abera____________________

Period
________8________________

Part I
• OPEN the (PhET:Colorado) folder Simulations Electricity Magnetism Circuits
http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/physics/electricity-magnets-and-circuits
• Open “Balloons”
• Check “Show all Charges.” Nothing else should be checked.
• Rub the balloon on the shirt
• What overall charge does the balloon now have? _______________Negative
charge_________________
• What overall charge does the shirt now have? __________Positive
Charge_________________________
• What happens when you drag the balloon away from the shirt and let it go? ____The
ballon attracts itself to the shirt on its own._______
• Why? _____Their forces act in the same direction. (negative and positve charges attract
eachother)_____________________________________________________________
• Reset
• Check “Wall”
• Rub the balloon on the shirt again.
• What happens to the negative charges in the wall when you move the balloon near it?
________________The Negative charges move away
slowly.________________________________________________________
• What happens to the positive charges in the wall when you move the balloon near it?
_____________________They stay the
same___________________________________________________
• Why don’t all the positive charges move toward the balloon? ______________Because
their is a small amount of positive charges.________
• Hold the balloon in between the wall and shirt and release it
• Why doesn’t the balloon just stay in the middle? ________________Because there is
more positve charges on the shirt then their is negative so the ballon is going to be
attracted to that because the ballon has more negative charges.________________
________________________________________________________________________

Part II
• Open “Travoltage”
• Experiment with rubbing Travolta’s foot against the carpet and touching his finger to the
door handle.
• Now try building up charge while his finger is on the door.
• What happens? __His hand produces electricty shocks and it is released to the door
knob._________________________________________________________
• Move his finger away again and build up another charge
• When Travolta’s finger is near the door knob, what happens to the electrons currently in
the metal door knob? ____They start attracting the electrons in the mans
body.__________________________________________________
• This ________negative__________ a local _________positve______ charge in the door
knob.
• Why are shocks worse when you touch conductors rather than insulators? ______because
you are actually feeling the shock______
________________________________________________________________________
• If you take your hat off on a dry winter day, sometimes your hair will stand up. Explain
this phenomenon. ______Because your hair rubs om the had, and the opposite charges
attract each other.___________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

Part III
• Open “Electric Hockey”
• The goal of this game is to get the black positive puck to go in the goal.
• How can you set up just one negative charge to score a goal? (Remember to hit start)
___You can put a negative charge in the goal and the positve puck will go towards
it._____________________________________________________________________
• Clear each time you try a new set up. Reset if you want to retry your current set up.
• How can you set up just one positive charge to score a goal? _______You can put a
positve charge in the goal and the negative puck will go towards
it_________________________________________________________________
• Change the mass and see what happens.
• What happens when the mass is lighter? _A collision
occurs.______________________________________
• Why does the mass affect the speed if it is not apart of the electric force equation?
__Because if the mass is lighter it will it will go faster rather than it being heavier. The
mass can hold it down or lighten it up.
______________________________________________________________________
• Reset – Put one positive charge on the surface and one negative charge directly below it.
• Check the “Field” box.
• Draw the field (you can connect the arrows if you wish)

• Set up a triangle of charges, with two positives and one negative. Draw the field lines for
this set up.

• Now play the game. You can practice a little bit if you want.
• Set difficulty to 1, then 2, then 3. When you beat each level, draw your set up, and show
me. Hint: leaving the field box checked might help you
• Level 1 set up:
• Level 2 set up:

• Level 3 set up:
