The document discusses marking and drilling holes on the pitch circle diameter (PCD) of a round disc. It provides two solutions: the first uses a protractor to mark holes based on the calculated distance between holes, while the second uses a lathe machine with dividers and scribing to precisely lay out and mark the holes without calculations. The preferable solution discussed is using a lathe machine for efficiency and precision over marking by hand with a protractor.

Pitch Circular Dia of a Round Disc:

The Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is the diameter of the circle which passes through the centre of
all the studs, wheel bolts or wheel rim holes. It is also called Bold Circle Diameter. It is the circle
on which holes are going to be marked and then drilled.

Solution for Marking and Drilling PCD holes:

First to mark holes on the PCD of round disc, we need to find the distance between each hole and then
we can mark them. To determine distance, we need angle:

Angle = 360 / No of Holes = 360 / 8 = 45 Degrees

After finding the angle, now we can find the adjacent distance between holes:

Distance between holes = sin(Angle) * PCD = sin(45) * 160 mm = 113.137 mm

Now as we have found the distance between each hole, now it’s time to mark them.

To mark the holes, we can use a protractor and place it on our PCD, measure angles and mark the holes
accordingly.

As we have done marking now, now is the time to drill the holes. The holes can be drilled by using hand
drilling machine or drill press.

Another Solution for Marking and Drilling Holes on PCD:

Another way to mark PCD for marking holes on a round disc is to just put it on Lathe and just cut a line
where we need it. The holes are marked using dividers, a good quality steel rule and scriber.
You can lay them all out just using dividers, a good quality steel rule and a scriber; no calculations
necessary.

Use the dividers to scribe the 10" diameter circle from a small center punch mark at the center.

Now scribe for eight holes around this circle starting from a small punch mark; the chordal length for
eight holes is the same as the radius. You start at the punch mark and scribe a line to intersect the circle
on either side, make two more punch marks and scribe from these, two more punch marks and scribe
from these and if you have been precise these final lines intersect the circle at the same point.

Now adjust the dividers to slightly more than half the radius and bisect the gap between the eight punch
marks by scribing intersecting arcs and then drawing lines between the arc intersection points and
crossing the circle, punch mark at the circle intersection point.

Now scribe your 4.5" diameter circle from the original punch mark at the center and just scribe lines
across from the appropriate marks out of the twelve to position your four holes.

With care you can attain a precision of better than +/-.01" for your hole positions.

After marking holes, we will drill the holes using lathe machine.

Preferable Solution:
The solution which is most reasonable to me is the second one as it is done on lathe machine. Using
dividers is most fast and reasonable as compare to protractor. The first one is actually mostly by hand
and it’s good for small production but where we need a bulk production in industry it’s best to use lathe
machine as it’s fast, accurate and precise. However, CNC Lathe Machine is best for very high
productions. As CNC Lathe Machine is automatic and is technology based. Other solutions also include
Sir Radial Drilling Machine and Milling Machine to drill holes.
