Lesson - 2 Missing Term in A Proportion

This document provides examples and instructions for solving proportions to find missing values. It explains that if the missing value is one of the means, you multiply the extremes and divide by the means. If the missing value is one of the extremes, you multiply the means and divide by the extremes. Practice problems are provided to fill in missing ratios and find values of x in proportions.

Lesson – 2 Missing Term

in a Proportion
Expectation:
Solve for the value of the unknown in a given proportion.

Question:
How do you find the value of the unknown in a proportion?

Example 1:
4 12
Find the of x, given x = 5

Solution:
4 12
x
= 5 use cross – multiplication

(x) (12) = (4) (5)

12 = 20
20
x = 12

5
x= 3

2
x = 13 Answer
Example 2:
Find the value of N in the proportion.
3;5=6;N

3 x (N) = 5 x 6
3N = 30
30
N= 3

N = 10

Example 3:
7 N
8
= 40
use another solution.

7 x 40
Solution: N = 8
280
N= 8

N = 35

RECAP
To solve for the missing term.
 If one of the means is unknown, multiply the extremes then divide the
product by the means.

 If one of the extremes is unknown, multiply the means, then divide the
product by the extremes.
Practice Exercise:

A. Fill in the box with a number that will make the ratios proportional.

1. 3; 9 = 10;
2. ; 8 = 12; 2
3. 4; 6 = ;9
4. ; 5 = 70; 1
5. 3; 6 = 9;

B. Find the value of X.

3 x
6. 5 = 150

x 7
7. 6 = 3

25 6
8. x = 9

4 x
9. 18 = 6

5 15
10. 4 9 = x
