CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Quarantine is the separation and restriction of movement of people who potentially been

exposed to a contagious disease to ascertain if they become well, so reducing the risk them

infecting others. This differs from isolation, which is the separation of people who have been

diagnosed with a contagious disease from people who are not sick; however, the two terms are

often used interchangeably, especially in communication with the public.2 The word quarantine

was first used in Venice, Italy in 1127 with regards to leprosy and was widely used in response

to the Black Death, although it was not until 300 years later that the UK properly began to

impose quarantine in response to plague.3 Most recently, quarantine has been used in the

coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. This outbreak has seen entire cities in China

effectively placed under mass quarantine, while many thousands of foreign nationals returning

home from China have been asked to self-isolate at home or in state-run facilities. There are

precedents for such measures. Citywide quarantines were also imposed in areas of China and

Canada during the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), whereas entire

villages in many West African countries were quarantined during the 2014 Ebola outbreak.

Lockdown, quarantine, social distance, and loneliness. Coronavirus has brought with it new

terms, new laws and new forms of life. Information sharing, using plain words, has never been

more critical than it is now. While taking us back to World War 2 seems to be common at the

moment, the large percentage of them are totally new to us, and are evolving so fast that it's hard

to keep up. When our scientists are carrying away the amazing feats of providing data on many

aspects relating to coronavirus, there is a need to collaborate efficiently so that we can all
understand what is expected of us. Now is the time to talk clearly, with some nice, easy graphics

to help you understand crucial facts.

1.1 Background of the Study

Effects of Home Quarantine Among the Respondents in Purok Falcata, Barangay

Tubod. According to Oscar Wilde’s inspirational quotes about quarantine, “I think

it’s very healthy to spend time alone. You need to know how to be alone and not be defined

by another person.” Everyone needs time to accept the reality and learn how to be alone

especially the Respondents in Purok Falcata,Barangay Tubod. The purpose of this study is to

know what are the effects of students and parents’ about Home Quarantine. We may feel

bored but honestly, the best thing you can do is to just try even if you’re scared. Even if you

don’t know what’s you’re doing. Something good will always come from trying. This study

aims to discover problems that the students and parents facing due to this Home Quarantine

crisis situation also, to find solutions to their problems if there’s any. This study is crucial

because it explains; what are the possible outcomes of the students and parents mental and

physical health. According to Tomas Sedlacek’s article about “The Advantages of

Disadvantages: Or Don’t Let the Quarantine Slip through Your Fingers” “Take advantage of

a situation we can do nothing about anyway” “Let’s look at it from the positive side. The

world will have a Sabbath. Cities will calm down. People will pause and return a little bit

into their own bag of skin, into their own human dimensions. There will be time, plenty of

time. And we will be at home a lot. In short, we are undoubtedly in for an experience of a

lifetime”
1.2 Research Objectives:

 To explore students ‘and parents’ effects towards Home Quarantine in Purok Falcata,

Barangay Tubod.

 To learn on how students’ and parents’, cope up Home Quarantine.

 To determine the effect of Home Quarantine to the students’ and parents’ in different

aspects.

 To assess effects of Home Quarantine to oneself and family.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study sought to investigate the Effects of Home Quarantine Among the Respondents

in Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod. More specifically it seeks to find the answers to the following

questions:

1. What does the residence of Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod feel about this ongoing pandemic?

2. On what aspect/s did Home Quarantine affect the residence of Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod?

3. Are there any changes with the lives of the residence of Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod

during this pandemic?

4. In what way does Home Quarantine affect oneself?

5. In what way does Home Quarantine affect family interaction?

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study will be undertaken to find out the Effects of Home Quarantine rendered by the

Calcite students in Iligan City National High School through the response of the respondents in

Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod.

Benefiting the study are the various sectors as follows:

The Students

The direct recipients of the output of this research are the students living in Purok Falcata,

Barangay Tubod. With the help of this study, the students would be informed of the effects of

Home Quarantine, especially to their study.

The Parents

With the help of this study, the parent will be informed with the effect of Home

Quarantine to their children and to them.

The Community

With the help of this study, the people would be informed on the effect of Home

Quarantine to Humanity.

The Future Researchers

This study contains information about the effects of Home Quarantine among the

respondents of Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod, thus the future researchers could use this as a

guide if ever they plan to conduct research related to this.

1.5 Theoretical Framework

The key concept utilized in quarantine is germ theory, which holds that microscopic organisms

called bacteria are the cause of disease. Germ theory, first postulated in the mid-nineteenth century, was

supported by the work of Louis Pasteur, who published his findings in 1861.2 In 1876, German physician

Robert Koch “traced the life history of the organism responsible for anthrax, a disease of cattle and

sheep.” Jo N. (1998) Six years later, in 1882, Koch successfully traced tuberculosis, “first human disease

microorganism.” Though Koch’s discovery was monumental in retrospect, germ theory did not become

part of scientific and medical canon until the early twentieth century. Koch’s contemporaries were trained

to believe that, “most diseases were caused by miasmas, undisciplined lifestyles, and anything other than

tiny living organisms.” Sheldon Watts (1997)

An important offshoot of germ theory and an idea pivotal to the technology of quarantine is the

notion of the incubation period of disease. Anyone who carries a pathogen responsible for a disease is

considered infected, though not all carriers may be symptomatic. Symptoms of a disease are not always

caused by the pathogen itself. Sometimes, the symptoms occur due to the response of the immune system

in its attempt to fight off the infection. An excellent example of an immune response symptom is a fever,

which is the body’s attempt to control the spread of harmful microbes through internal temperature

regulation. Rudi Volti (1995). Many microorganisms exhibit a small tolerance range for heat; by

increasing the temperature of the environment in which they grow (the body), the immune system

attempts to kill invading pathogens. Robert Benoit (2011). Pathogenic bacteria take time to grow and

multiply within their host. Until they do so in sufficient numbers, they are often overlooked by the

immune system. The time between when a pathogen enters the body and when it first causes symptoms is

the incubation period.

1.6 Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. Paradigm of the Study

Providing care to a spouse or partner who is dying and then losing that person are among

the most stressful of human experiences. The co-occurrence of positive and negative

psychological states in the midst of enduring and profoundly stressful circumstances has

important implications for our understanding of the coping process. Coping theory had

traditionally focused on the management of distress. This article describes coping processes that

are associated with positive psychological states in the context of intense distress and discusses

the theoretical implications of positive psychological states in the coping process. Humans' basic

desire is to have feelings of belonging. Feeling welcomed by all and part of the social system is
perceived to be a basic human necessity and an integral aspect of mental health and well-being.

Social isolation becomes a risk factor for suicidality, whereas social cohesion is a preventive

factor.

Another simple human necessity is the need to be appreciated and useful. The assumption

that one is a burden can contribute to the impression that others close to the person "will be

better off without him / her." Financial difficulties, medical conditions, incarceration, or multiple

combinations of difficulties can contribute to skewed expectations, thereby raising risk.

1.7 Scope and Delimitations

This study focuses to the Purok. Falcata, Tubod Iligan City. This involves a random

survey on 20 respondents which 8 are females and 12 male parents or students. The selection

of the respondents are only limited.

This research is designed to have more knowledge on how the people in Purok Falcata,

Tubod Iligan City cope up being in Home Quarantine.

Definition of terms

To make the study easier to understand, to the following terms are defined operationally and/or lexically;

Effect. Disadvantages and Advantages that refer to the outcome of having a home quarantine on their

daily lives.

Home Quarantine. This refers to anyone who’s place is under lockdown and need to be home

quarantined to prevent transmissions.

Corona Virus 2019 (COVID 19). This refers for anyone that was infected with the virus.
Pandemic. This refers to the outbreak of a disease to the different country or to the whole word.

Positive Psychological State. talk about human virtues that can be optimize to get a better

life. like acceptance, flow, resilience, hardiness, etc. this are some example of coping up

on being Home Quarantine.

Negative Psychological State. This refers to the negative emotions and poor self-concept that have been

experience of the person. Negative affectivity subsumes variety of negative emotions including

anger, contempt, disgust, guilt, fear, and nervousness.

CHAPTER II

RELATED REVIEW AND LITERATURE

Quarantine is that the separation and restriction of movement of individuals who have

potentially been exposed to a communicable disease to establish if they become unwell, so

reducing the danger of them infecting others. Most recently, quarantine has been utilized in the

coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. A study contains psychological outcomes

during quarantine and found that during quarantine, 7% (126 of 1656) showed anxiety symptoms

and 17% (275) showed feelings of anger, whereas 4–6 months after quarantine these symptoms

had reduced to three (anxiety) and 6% (anger). After quarantine, many participants continued to

have interaction in avoidance behaviors. For health-care workers,20 being quarantined was

significantly and positively related to avoidance behaviors, like minimizing direct contact with

patients and not reporting to figure (Brooks SK, Webster RK, Smith LE 2020) . The advantages

of quarantine or insulation steps were applied to control and discourage the spread of infectious

diseases. It would take ample time for medical staff to determine the condition or for the

remainder of the infectious phase. The COVID-19 pandemic ensures that all of us sit at home

and do little in terms of social contact and exercise. This can have a detrimental impact on your

physical and mental health. Let's take a positive look at it. The planet is going to have a Sabbath.

Cities are going to calm down. People will stop and return a little to their own skin pack, to their

own human proportions. We'll probably start missing tourists soon, once we discover how empty

the city is without them. The threat and cancelation of airline routes from China will overcome

itself. After a few weeks of self-ostracizing, we may also continue to understand globalization;

its benefits have been so automatic to us that we have almost forgotten about them.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology employed by the researcher in this study. This

includes the research design, methods and instruments, the respondents, sample procedure and

techniques used in the study.

Conclusion

This study will be undertaken to find out the Effects of Home Quarantine rendered by the

Calcite students in Iligan City National High School through the response of the respondents in

Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod. For the most part, we as a collective have agreed that quarantine

is not exactly a great experience. It was so bad that some students risked getting COVID-19 just

to have in-person learning, which I understand. Online school can be difficult for a lot of people.

It would be especially difficult for me, at least that’s what I thought until I tried it. Surprisingly,
it has been a good time for me. So, we've decided to study the effects of quarantine-induced

online schooling here at Iligan City National High School.

Recommendations

This study has contributed to the students' and parents' effects towards Home Quarantine

in Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod. As the study progressed, a few areas surface as suggested

areas for future studies. The recommendation are as follows:

a.) This study was 20 participants' language use during interactions that reflected values. Some

phrases indicating values were identified base on underpinning Theory by sheldon watts (1997).

It is recommended to a conduct similar study, in a few other institutions to examine if these

words still reflect the same values portrayed in this study or if the words reflect other values.

b.) The findings showed that most of the values in this study emerge during the home quarantine

session. The purpose of this study is to know what are the effects of students and parents' about

Home Quarantine.

c.) This study aims to discover problems that the students and parents facing due to this Home

Quarantine crisis situation also, to find solutions to their problems if there’s any. This study is

crucial because it explains; what are the possible outcomes of the students and parents mental

and physical health.

d.) This study contains information about the effects of Home Quarantine among the respondents

of Purok Falcata, Barangay Tubod, thus the future researchers could use this as a guide if ever

they plan to conduct research related to this.
