Math6 Q3 Mod3 Algebraic Expressions and Equations FINAL 1

The document provides examples and explanations for translating real-life situations into algebraic expressions and equations using variables. It discusses defining variables, writing expressions and equations, and examples such as Samantha's age, the number of quail eggs, and juice in glasses. Students are given learning tasks to practice writing expressions and equations and matching situations to the correct mathematical representations.

Lesson Translating Equations into
1 Letters or Symbols

What I Need to Know

After completing this lesson, you are expected to:

a. give the translation of real-life equations into letters or symbols and vice-versa; and
b. write the expression and equation.

What’s In

Climb the ladder as fast as you can. You are given 3 minutes to reach the top. Let us see
how many correct answers you can get by giving the next two terms of the following
sequences following its nth rule.
3. a+ b, 2c + 2d, 3e + 3 f ____, ____.

2 3 4
2 . , , , ___, ____
3 4 5
1. 20, 16,12, ____, ____

What’s New

Take a look at this problem below.

One day, Mariano and Mariz went to the market. As they walked, Mariano saw traffic
signs while Mariz saw twice as many traffic signs as Mariano. Both followed all the traffic
signs as they traversed along the pedestrian lane.

How many traffic signs did Mariz see?

How many traffic signs did they see altogether?
What is It
If Mariano saw n traffic signs, how many traffic signs did Mariz see?
Let’s also find out how many traffic signs they saw altogether Then, transform it into
mathematical expression.
Statements Mathematical expressions
Mariano saw n traffic signs. n
If Mariz saw twice as many traffic sign as Mariano,
how many traffic signs did Mariz see? 2n
How many traffic signs did they see altogether? n+2n=3n
Example 1:
Meo is a newly hired messenger in a certain Bank in Maranding. As a trainee, he needs to
wear a polo-shirt every day. He was given a clothing allowance of Php 6,000.00. How many
polo-shirts can he buy if the cost for each polo shirt is Php 600.00?

Php6,000.00 ÷ Php600.00 = N
(clothing allowance) (to get the cost of (cost of each polo) (number of polo shirt) each
polo shirt)

The numerical expression is 6,000 ÷ 600

The equation is Php 6,000 ÷ Php 600 = 10
6,000 ÷ 600 = 10
Answer : Meo can buy 10 polo shirts.
Example 2:
Every morning, Ana jogs x km while Joel jogs twice as many kilometers as Ana. Write
the expression and equation of the total number of kilometers jogged by Ana and Joel.
Let x be the number of kilometers that Ana jogs.
Joel jogs twice as many kilometers as Ana: 2x
Total number of kilometers jogged by Ana and Joel: x + 2x

Example 3:
a. Give the translation of this real-life equation into words. (glass racks with glasses)
Y x 24 + Y x 30=N
Answer:
The children in their Home Economics Class were asked to arrange _Y__ glass rack with
24_ glasses and __Y glass rack with __ 30 glasses. How many glasses were there?

Remember:
Real life equations can be translated into letters or symbols, and letters or symbols can be
translated into real life equations by writing their expressions (both numerical and words).

b. Translate this equation in real life situation (in words).

24 ÷ (3+1) = N
Answer: (Any translation as long as it uses the given equation.)

Aling Marina brought home guavas for each of her 3 children and herself. How many
guavas will each of them get if she brings 24 guavas?

Learning Task 1
Which expression is correct? Choose between A or B. Write your answer in your
activity notebook.
Statements A B

2. Eight decreased by 5 8–5 8x5
3. Four times the sum of two and five 4 x ( 2 + 5) 4 x ( 5 – 2)

Learning Task 2

KAPAREWHO
Match the situations in column A to the equation or expressions in column B. Write
the answers in your activity notebook.

Column A Column B

1. In a certain eatery, there are n

tables with 4 chairs for each table. If A. 5 x 24 + 4 x 30=N
there are 32 persons who were
seated in each chair, how many
tables were there?

2. Edna is health conscious, so B. N x 4 = 32

she drinks only fresh fruit juice from
her small farm. One day she makes 1
liter bottle of guyabano juice. She
puts this to 3 identical glasses, C. 1 000 – 3(n) = 100
If the bottle has 100 ml left, how much
was the content of guyabano juice for
each glasses

3. Emma helps her mother

arrange the items in their store. Her
mother has her own made trays for
quail eggs. She finds 4 groups of 5 D. (4 x 5 x 5 ) +(3 x 8 x 10) = N
rows with 5 quail eggs and 3 groups of
8 rows with 10 quail eggs. How many
quail eggs are there in all?

Lesson Defining Variable in Algebraic

2 Expression and Equation

What I Need to Know

After completing this lesson, you are expected to:

a. define a variable in an algebraic expression and equation; and
b. write an algebraic expression and equation, and

What’s In

A. Copy the table on the right and write the expressions and equations in the correct
column.
(4 x 10) ÷ 5 7 + (6 x 3) = 25 Expression Equation
150 – 85 = 65 (3 X 25) - 5
91 ÷ 13= 6 + 7 80 – ( 20 + 5)
