CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction, background of the study, statement of the

problem, scope and limitation, significance of the study, conceptual framework and the

definition of terms that will help to understand this research.

INTRODUCTION

This study will tell and inform the students and teachers about the multimedia

information that affects the student’s academic performance. It will also help to improve

the technical skills of a student using the technologies which usually use nowadays to

gather some data and ideas easily.

This research is about how multimedia information develops the technical skills

of an ABM student in San Jose Litex Senior High School.

The usage of multimedia and the information that can get from it is a very useful

way to enhance the skills of an ABM student especially his/her digital task. Using the

computer or other devices, the rationality of ideas will boost the student’s abilities

needed to accomplish some computer-related complexities as well as other

performance which is related to technology.

The purpose of this research is to know the different benefits of multimedia

information in enhancing and developing the technical skills of an ABM student

particularly the first timer in terms of accounting.

Background of the study

Multimedia is the platform where a material is combined with text, graphs, audio

and simulation which defined Turkish Language Society (TLS).

However, it is generally used to refer to computer-based multimedia today. In the

multimedia definition of Brook (1997), on the other hand, the use of platforms like

movies, slides, music and light for purposes such as education or advertisement are

emphasized.

Also multimedia is the multiple introduction of a material with picture or text

based by Mayer (2001).

In the explanation of (Alkan et. al., 2001), multimedia sources created by using

audio, video, visual, graph, text, animation to explain a subject is expressed as the use

of different data types to explain an idea, an event or a subject.

In summary, it could be stated that multimedia is composed of computer

platforms where written media is presented with audial, visual and animation media, and

high definition and graphs are set (Maddux et al., 2001).

According to American social and organizational psychologist Robert Katz,

Technical skills involve skills that give the managers the ability and the knowledge to

use a variety of techniques to achieve their objectives. These skills not only involve

operating machines and software, production tools, and pieces of equipment but also

the skills needed to boost sales, design different types of products and services, and

market the services and the products.

According to the article of Miller, Jeffrey R. entitled Multimedia: a new

technology for the CPA, multimedia was a natural outgrowth of the personal computer

revolution that has had such a profound impact on the accounting profession. Since its

introduction, the PC has provided powerful data-crunching and word- processing

capabilities for businesses and individuals, and consequently, has dramatically changed

the manner information is processed and the way people work.

During the '80s and continuing in the '90s, numerous companies have installed or

are installing networking systems to facilitate information-sharing. Electronic information

is being transferred from one storage medium to another. However, until recently, some

types of information could not be stored or retrieved electronically (via computer), such

as audio or video images. Technologies have now been developed to integrate text,

audio, graphics, data-crunching, animation, and video; thus, the PC has become a

multimedia device.

Multimedia information appears to be more effective for learners with low prior

knowledge or attitude in the domain being learned. Mayer (1993) believes that this is

because the multimedia helps low domain knowledge learners to connect the new

knowledge to prior knowledge or, for learning systems such as a bicycle pump, to build

a cognitive model of the system. Multimedia may also make more important information

more obvious. However, learners with high domain knowledge have a rich source of

prior knowledge that can be connected to the new knowledge. These learners can make

these connections or build cognitive models with text alone. Also, learners with high

domain knowledge are more likely to know which information is important and on which

information they should focus their attention.

Statement of the Problem

To know the benefits of multimedia information in developing the technical skills

of grade 11 ABM students, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What multimedia that an ABM student usually used?

2. What are the benefits of multimedia information in developing technical skills of

grade 11 ABM students in SJLSHS?

3. How the benefits of multimedia can enhance the technical skill of an ABM

student?

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies that were connected

in this research.

RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

The technology is rapidly changing in many aspects in society and has a big

impact in youths (Castrodes et. al., 2012). It is proven that technology is having a big

contribution to enhance more the learning of the youths.

Based on the study of Beichner (1994), he found out that the multimedia has

good effects in psychology and emotional aspects of the students that also conducting a

study about organizing, systematic, and analyzing in many things.

Based on the book of Sampath et. al. (2007), “Learning usually involves both a

student and teacher. But in some of the recent innovation of the educational system,

the teacher needs not physically present to teach.” That is why teachers are using

modern tools from technology to serve as teaching instrument. The helpful tools or

devices that belong in multimedia are LCD projector, computer, lapel, and etc. which

are very useful to improve the knowledge of the students.

Tse-Kian Neo (Ken) and Mai Neo (2004) observed that the multimedia

educational design process will reinforce and strengthen the traditional instructional

communication process and foster a number of innovative methods to communicate

knowledge to the learners.

Local Literature

Based on research, the students are learning more when the classroom is alive

in discussing the lessons. Good strategies can also help the teaching while using the

modern technology. Some of the most innovative technologies used in teaching are

television, radio, projectors, lapel and other electronics devices.

According to Aguilar (2001), teaching of instructional instructors would greatly

help in teaching less difficult tasks. But it requires persistence, patience, courage and

teacher’s resourcefulness. It is important to think carefully and not just about your own

interests in the usage of instructional tools. One of the most important roles of the
teacher is to ensure the knowledge that can gain by the students from the tools they

used.

According to Sen. Edgardo J. Angara (2011), the Education in the Philippines

should use innovative technology in such way, it can be solved the shortage problem in

classrooms, teacher and books. In addition, it would be the good effect of modern

equipment in teaching because to fill the deficits long future education on the country.

Furthermore, Pingol (2011) added that technology has an ability to improve the

quality of the education in a community. It is easier for the students and teachers to

have information everywhere in the world.

According to Pitagan (2012), the teachers needed to have a great ability in

knowledge and willing to adjust in terms of changes in technology. Another important

duty of a teacher is to provide a “human touch” or aspects feelings to communicating to

his students that despite the lifting of the technology is still a man to dominate and

control the technology and not the other way.

According to Riel (2013), the technology is rapidly changing on many aspects in

society and it has a great effect to the youth so they must to study the plans hardly to

used multimedia inside of class to give more to the student’s good education. Even

though multimedia helps a lot in the academic performance of the students, it has also a

big impact if they misuse it in their learning.

RELATED STUDIES

Foreign Studies
According to Susan (2008) paper role, entitled “Multimedia Packages Relevance

for Effective Evaluation” has shown the importance of multimedia equipment at present,

the importance of teachers and the evaluation of its use. Multimedia retrieval takes into

account the information that the teacher’s experience of using it can be learned using

them, language learning and computer knowledge.

According to the study of Kumar and Hamblemariam (2010) entitled “Learning

with Multimedia a Constructive Cooperative Approach in Education”, the multimedia

programs with an educational objective that can build a situation where the own

understanding of the student can be enhance with the use of their own perception in

information.

Related to the study of Khasnis (2013) about enhancement of Mathematics

learning through computer-assisted instruction, which showed positive outcomes in the

students “Immediate achievement in Mathematics and attitude towards Mathematics”.

The investigator concludes that computers should be integrated into the Mathematics

education system for effective learning.

Local Studies

Base to the study of De Torre, Halis at Joven entitled “The impact of technology

in learning of the students”, many says that technology is extremely helpful to study and

save more of their time than going to the classroom or libraries and to gather

information.

According to the study of Bermudez, Garcia at Acop (2016), the proclamation of

their research is all about “The use technology in the study of students in Bamban
National High School”, stated that technology is not only giving benefits but also the

importance of it for the students.

According to the study of Benedicto, Lagman, Longcop, Kinilitan, Malibiran,

Rulloda at Sermona (2018) entitled “Ang paggamit ng teknolohiya sa pag-aaral”, the

respondents agree that the multimedia will be very helpful to the students. By the use of

multimedia students are more likely to remember the information come from.

Synthesis of the study

All of the literature and studies gathered is showing the importance of modern

technologies in these days. Researchers stated that multimedia is highly useful in the

ability of student and teacher to give a new strategy in teaching.

There are many effects of multimedia in a student especially the use of

computer. The student’s mind becomes active in the skill involved about analyzing,

organizing, and building up things using of modern ways. By media, the child learns to

observe and do something.

The use of multimedia and information gathering is a great help in everyday life.

According to a study, multimedia has the ability to improve the student to be involved in

different aspects and one of that is well being of a student in mathematics as well as in

organizing. The previous studies stated some benefits of multimedia that is also related

to this research.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapters presents the research design, population and sampling technique,

selection of co-researcher and data analysis procedure to know more the use of this

study.

Research Design

This research is a kind of qualitative research since the purpose of this research

is to know the benefits of multimedia information to enhance the technical skills. The

researchers used a narrative method of research which focuses on observing and

describing the behavior of Grade 11 ABM student in using multimedia technology that

influencing their technical skill. The objective of the researchers is to know the benefits

of using multimedia.

This research shows the benefits of multimedia information in developing the

technical skills of students of Grade 11 ABM strand of San Jose Litex Senior High

School. The researchers selected the descriptive survey research design which

interviews the students that strengthens the gather data of the research which fall under

descriptive method. Researchers believe that using this kind of method is effective to
gather data easily on random respondents and the researchers can collect the data

clear and precisely.

Population and Sampling Technique

For the reason that there are total of five sections in Grade 11 ABM students, the

researchers used the "Simple Random Sampling Technique" by means of fish bowl

technique to select the respondents to answer the questionnaire.

In this way of selecting the respondents it will prevent the long-term selection

instead, the pulled out lottery names will be the representative of the whole class.

Because of this technique, the getting of respondent is easier.

Selection of Co-researcher

The researchers used a questionnaire as proof and data source. By means of

questionnaire it will make data gathering easier and precise the arrangement of their

answers. It would be more organized in getting information.

The survey questions where used in determining the benefits that can get from

using multimedia which can develop the technical skill of a Grade 11 ABM student. The

questionnaires prepared in the survey were around four (4) questions for the selected

students.

Data Analysis Procedure

The researcher conducted the study by the following procedures:

1. The researchers make an interview questions and ask permission in principal and

consent in teachers that have classes to get the data, to gather information through

survey.

2. After getting the permission, the researchers conduct an interview in five sections of

grade 11 ABM students. The researchers used a simple random sampling to choose the

respondents.

3. Then, the chosen respondents were interviewed by the researchers. The researchers

used interview to gather accurate information more easily.

4. The researchers finished only one day in conducting an interview and got the

answers quickly from selected students.

5. After obtaining the data, it will be reviewed and to be given the corresponding

interpretation.

6. Lastly, the information that was gathered by the researchers will serve as a guide to

know the benefits of multimedia information in developing the technical skill of a Grade

11 ABM students.
