EEEE3112-3120 - Control Systems Coursework

This document provides guidelines for the coursework of the Control Systems modules EEEE3112 and EEEE3120. Students are encouraged to perform independent research on control-related topics. The coursework should include selecting a system model from literature, analyzing its response, designing a controller, and comparing the uncontrolled and controlled responses. Students must submit a written report, MATLAB codes, and Simulink files. The coursework is worth 25% of the modules and aims to test students' understanding and creativity in control systems.

EEEE3112-3120 – Control Systems – Coursework Guidelines

The coursework of the Control Systems part of the modules EEEE3112 and EEEE3120 is an open-
ended type. The reason behind this choice is to encourage the students to perform a moderate amount
of research and self-study to explore various control-related topics. Such an approach will remove
boundaries and obstacles that might deter the students’ creativity and ability to demonstrate a deep
understanding of the topics of the module, or even other topics that are not covered in this module.
Please note that the following guidelines must be followed:

1. Include your name and student number on the first page. In addition, include a catchy, but
realistic, title that reflects the contents of your report.
2. Select any system from the literature. The system should be represented by a transfer function.
3. Start with a brief Introduction section about the topic and system that you selected. Discuss the
following:
A. The type of system and the task(s) that it performs.
B. The importance of controlling this system.
C. The challenges associated with the system.
D. Cite the paper(s)/book(s)/source(s) of the model that you have selected and for other
information that you include in the report. Please avoid using websites as your references.
E. The system must be second order, at least. The higher the order of the system, the better your
chance to get a higher mark. However, keep in mind that you should use a system with a high
order as long as you can successfully implement your control method(s). Consider the risk and
reward.
F. At the end of the Introduction, declare whether this system part of your Final Year Project,
Group Project, or none of these. This will not affect your marks. It is for my own reference.
4. Present a Model/System Description section. In this section, you should present and discuss the
following:
A. The transfer function of the system.
as + b
B. The parameters of the system. For instance, if the transfer function is 2
, then you
s + cs + d
should explain what the parameters a, b, c, and d represent.

C. How does the response of the uncontrolled system look like? You can discuss time and
frequency domain responses, if you want. Use MATLAB/Simulink to create the figures
whenever possible.
D. What makes the response of this system bad/not optimal so that you need to control it?
5. Present your Proposed Control Method(s) section. In this section you should present and discuss
the following:
A. The control structure(s) that you are implementing. Present the block diagrams and
equations/transfer functions of the control structure(s).
B. Present the results of the controlled response using the controller(s) that you developed. Use
MATLAB/Simulink to create the figures whenever possible.
C. Analyze the results and perform comparisons between the uncontrolled and controlled
responses. Did you manage to get better results compared to the source of your model?
6. Write a brief Conclusion section about the report.
7. Include the References at the end of the report.
8. There is no minimum nor maximum limit on the number of words in the report, as long as the report
is clear and includes sufficient information.
9. The coursework must be carried out individually.
10. The coursework should be submitted as a single zip file that includes the following:
A. The report in Microsoft Word format.
B. MATLAB codes file(s) that you used to generate your results.
C. Simulink file(s) that you used to generate your results.
11. The coursework worth 25% of the module.

Good luck!
