2 Slide: The Banana Farm - 5 Slide

This document discusses Fair Trade, forced labor, child labor, and how Fair Trade addresses these issues. It begins by defining Fair Trade as a method of trading that provides better prices, decent working conditions, and a fairer deal for farmers and workers in developing countries. It then explains that small banana farmers, for example, cannot compete with large corporations and are forced to sell bananas at unsustainable prices, living in poor conditions as a result. Approximately 25 million people worldwide are involved in forced labor activities like domestic work, sexual exploitation, mining, and agriculture, especially in Asia and Africa. 152 million children are still in child labor, often doing hazardous and exploitative work. Poverty and lack of education are main causes.

Fair Trade: Definition - 4 Slide

Fair Trade can be defined as a method of trading that works

through better prices, decent working conditions, and a fairer
deal for farmers and workers in developing countries.

The Banana Farm - 5 Slide

And you might be wondering, why do they even need help?

Can’t they just refuse to sell their products for an unfair price?
Well, unfortunately, no, let’s take as an example a banana
farm: small producers in developing countries can’t compete
against big corporations, that can sell the fruit for much
cheaper, because of that, small producers are forced to sell
bananas for an unsustainable price, as a consequence, they
live in poor conditions.

The Origin Of Fair Trade – 6 Slide

Even though the first fair trade label wasn’t created until 1988 in
the Netherlands, other organizations were made with the same
objective in the past, for example, right after WW2, alternative
trading organizations were created in Europe, to make trading
fairer.
And surprisingly, in the late 18 hundreds, some movements
shared the same mindset as the fair trade movement, like a
Company called Hamadova that only used products fairly
traded.

The 10 Principles of Fair Trade – Slide 7

The Fair Trade movement has grown a lot since it started and
many organizations claimed to be Fair Trade so the World Fair
Trade organization established 10 Principles of Fair Trade.
They also ensure that these principles are upheld through
consistent monitoring.

1. OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISADVANTAGED

PRODUCERS – One of the Fairtrade movement principle
objectives is to end poverty, supporting the small
producers by trading for them to have self-sufficiency and
ownership.
2. TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY- The
organization needs to be transparent in its management
and commercial relations.

Forced And Child Labour – Slide 8

LeForced Labour – Slide 9

Forced labor exists in all areas from domestic work to sexual

exploitation, mining, and agriculture, approximately 25 million
people across the world are involved in those activities, with
more expression in Asia and Africa.

Child Labour – Slide 10

Worldwide 152 million children are still in child labour. Of these,

70 percent are working in agriculture.
[16:18]
Many of them do not attend school, have little time to play, and
do not receive proper nutrition or care. Often this work can also
be hazardous and exploitative. Many of the types of work girls
and boys are involved in are hidden and difficult to track,
suggesting that the actual nuber of child laborers could be
much higher, especially for some girls

Causes – Slide 11

To get to a solution we need to know where does the problem

comes from. So, forced and child labor can be caused by:

• Poverty
• Lack of education

ced & Child Labour – Slide 13

And how does fair trade international address these issues?

According to them, they combat forced and child labor with
some of the following measures:

• Building knowledge of trafficking patterns in the areas of

known risk and supporting producers to put preventative
measures in place.
• Training farmers, workers, and management on human rights
topics.
• Supporting Fairtrade producer communities to monitor and
report child labor cases
