Relation and Function: "Range" "Domain"

A relation is a set of ordered pairs showing the relationship between inputs and outputs. A function is a special type of relation where each input is matched with exactly one output. To determine if a relation is a function, use the vertical line test - if a vertical line intersects the graph at more than one point, it is not a function.

RELATION AND FUNCTION

A relation is a set of ordered pairs. The x values are called the domain and the y values are called
the range.

A function is a special kind of relation. A function is a set of ordered pairs in which each x value has
exactly one y value.

Below are examples of relations that are functions.

{(1, 2), (2, 2), (3, 2), (4, 2)} “Domain” “Range”
The domain is {1, 2, 3, 4}. The domain is the set
The range is the set
of all the possible
The set of ordered pairs is of all the possible

To decide if a relation is a
function use the vertical
000 line test. In a function, a
vertical line will intersect
the graph only ONCE.
