Shadows add depth to your drawing, and there are countless ways =
Yyou can go about it; depends on the style you'd lke to draw in gradients
Usually when you learn drawing fr the rst time, you learn
about ight placement. Objects and characters ina three:
dimensional environment with alight source possess a shadow
where direc ight doesn't reach or ends, and depending
‘on where the light is, how intense iis or what color its, it will
ive the character or object a cfferent look and the shadow a
different design as it describes the form together with the light.
I Highights are direct efiections ofthe ight source, andthe
‘more reflective a surface is the shinier the impression (and
because ofthe ones of the skin, it's als shiny in places,
but of couse it is something exaggerated in sexy dranings or“
hentai for example)
TL. Indirect (reflected from the environment) ight also
‘makes the shadows lighter (and hence, not black)
41) Simple Shading (cel-shaded anime style)
1. Color the areas, use seperate layers for each part
I. For each color layer, clip a new layer on top of it and
paint/shade with a large uniform brush/pen, or select
the area you want shaded with the lasso tool, then fil
IIL Use the same method for darkest shadows and
highlights (place highlights according to the light source)
1 Gradients are a special tool that depends on your
‘software, but you can use the airbrush tool instead; on i
another seperate layer, put gradients from the point of _step'4’//gradients'and blush

2) Visual Novel-like Shading
1. Color the areas, use seperate layers for each part
II, For each color layer, clip a new layer on top of it and
use the curve tool with fill enabled, to draw out the
shapes of the shading, or you can use the selection tool
or brush (you can also use a vector layer with the
curve tool, to adjust the lines as you go /advanced)
TI-2. Blur the top edges of the shadow, leave the bottom
edges clear since they would be the line ofthe casted
shadow from the form above
11-3. For the hair avoid blurring the vertical edges of the
shadows, if needed only blur the top and bottom parts,
since hair is shiny; however, you can use the air brush
and gradients later on diferent layers to soften the
hard edges, if you don't use blur on the shadows there
IIL. The highlights (and darkest shadows) should be
definite and small/sparing for the body, but plenty for
the hair; use the same main method as [IL] to draw
them out, or the other options there
eye shine III-2. Also color the lines with darker versions of the
