Course Description: This course investigates the basic concepts underlying the design, planning
and improvement of manufacturing and service firms. Topics include strategy, forecasting,
aggregate planning, distribution planning, inventory management, queueing, and project
management.
Course Objective: In this course, students are exposed to different operations seen in organizations,
and their importance at the strategic level. Special emphasis is given to manufacturing vs. service
operations; planning and decision making issues. Students will be able to identify the differences
in manufacturing and service sectors, as well as competitive weapons in each sector. They could
design, modify or simplify operations at any level of the organization in order to achieve efficiency.
Basic tools used at the operational level production management decisions are introduced to the
students. These tools are used to solve forecasting, distribution planning, inventory management,
queueing problems, and project management. Students are expected to use computer in some of the
assignments. Students will realize the importance of Location and Layout design decisions, as well
as project management in order to be successful in the market.

Grading: The tentative grading scheme is: Article reports 30%, Participation 20%, Presentation
20% and Final project 30%.
Academic honesty Policy: Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. It is expected
that students will collaborate to some extent in order to study for exams and complete assignments;
however, only original work will be accepted for grades. Plagiarism or duplication of assigned
work will result in an immediate F for that assignment and also disciplinary committee will be
informed about the case.
