A. Introduction 30 minutes Analyze the sentences and discuss how they become non-parallel and parallel
clauses.

Non-parallel dependent clauses:

 The job requires someone who can write, manage and problem-solving.

Parallel dependent clauses:

 The job requires someone who can write, manage and solve problems.
(can write, manage and solve- all verbs)

Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more
ideas have the same level of importance. It is the repetition of a chosen grammatical
form within a sentence. By making each compared item or idea in your sentence
follow the same grammatical pattern, you create a parallel construction.

Rewrite the sentences to show parallel structure.


1. Nancy likes playing the piano, the trumpet and play the guitar.

1. Parallelism is used to balance nouns with nouns, prepositional phrases
with prepositional phrases, participles with participles, infinitives with
infinitives, clauses with clauses.
