Reading & Writing Skills 11: Second Semester: 1 Quarter Week 3

This document provides an overview of different patterns used to organize written works across disciplines, including comparison and contrast, cause-effect, problem-solution, and persuasion. It begins by reviewing four common patterns covered previously: narration, definition, description, and classification. It then explains that rhetorical patterns are types of information organization based on how people understand knowledge through writing. Typical patterns include contrast and comparison, cause-and-effect, problem-solving, and persuasion. Learning the key transitional phrases that signal which pattern is being used helps the reader understand how the ideas are organized. Mastering these patterns will help build well-organized paragraphs and essays across subject areas.

Lesson Overview

Patterns of Development Overview

In the previous lecture, you mastered the four writing patterns: narration, definition, description, and
classification.

An introduction, a key statement or assertion, a body, and a conclusion are all common features of
academic essays. The content of an essay is made up of key points and supporting units that must be
organized logically and according to the essay's definition.

Besides, there are many ways of organizing information using various development patterns. These
patterns, known as "rhetorical modes," in education, reflect how people think and how they demonstrate
their understanding through writing.

Rhetorical patterns are types of information organization that are based on how people understand
knowledge using words. Typical methods include contrast and comparison, cause-and-effect, problem-
solving, and persuasion. These common patterns will help you build and organize information in your
essays. Learning to use these development patterns in writing is simple; all you must do is to be familiar
with key transitional phrases that tell the reader which pattern is being used. Then you'll need to figure out
which strategies will help you develop your ideas the most.
