INFLUENCE SOCIETY”

MASS MEDIA

The Mass Media is a unique feature of modern society; its development has accompanied an
increase in the magnitude and complexity of societal actions and engagements, rapid social
change, technological innovation, rising personal income and standard of life and the decline of
some traditional forms of control and authority. Refers to a diverse array of media technologies
that reach a large audience via mass communication. The technologies through which this
communication takes place include a variety of outlets. Broadcast media transmit information
electronically via media such as films, radio, recorded music, or television.

TYPES OF MEDIA

There are various types of mass media we people, even the children who are at home watching
cartoons and geography channels is also a kind of mass media.

We human beings, today, is surrounded by various types of Mass Media which influences our
life. Through oral, written, and broadcast media, all age groups get knowledge, information,
and entertainment. There are various types of mass media that provide us with various types of
Political, Religious, Economics and Social related news and information to the masses or larger
audience through print media or digital media.

Each media has its significance in some or the other way. For example, newspapers, a print
provides news headlines and information in rural areas and urban areas as well as a TV which
also provides information, news and entertainment shows through a digital medium.

HOW MEDIA IS INFLUENCED BY SOCIETY

Freedom of Speech within the Media has progressed vastly over the recent years. National
legislations restricted journalists, but as globalization began and spread quickly, along with
technology, these national barriers disappeared, as did the legislations that go with them. The
availability to a bigger and wider variety of information and news from all around the world has
increased, and journalists have a larger freedom of expression. The Old Media faced many
constraints which new technology has aided to breakdown, making information today more
accessible and easier to use. There are vast differences and progressions from the Old Media to
the New Media. Briefly, information is easier to use and can reach wider audiences, it preserves
and stores information more effectively, encourages copying, changing and growth of
information, uses images and sounds instead of text and all in an instant, in faster ways,
completely unimaginable before. The barriers of time and space that were obstacles in the past
have been overcome through electric communication. The result now is the unimaginable
increase in the speed of the transmission of information. The dependency on inefficient
transportation for distribution is no longer a barrier to the spread of information and through
the Internet information can be transmitted instantaneously. This information can then be
responded to and passed onto others equally as rapid.

The audience of this new media is much larger than that of the print era. Not only is
information reaching a larger audience, but it is reaching new audiences and enabling
communication between groups of people that previously couldn’t, through the disintegration of
the geographical barrier. Social media comes in a variety of flavors. You’ve got the vanilla
Facebook, the bite-sized dessert that is Twitter, the dish with the perfect presentation known as
Pinterest, the on-the-go Instagram, and of course, the zero-calorie Snapchat... These are just
some of the platforms people are using today.

HOW MEDIA INFLUENCED THE SOCIETY

The media influences so many people’s behavior nowadays. Information can be spread after a
few clicks of a button, whether it is true, false, speculation or gossip. This can affect
relationships in various ways, be it between celebrities and ordinary people or between
celebrities themselves and their loved ones. The media can manipulate, influence, persuade and
pressurize society, along with even controlling the world at times in both positive and negative
ways; mentally, physically and emotionally.

Controversial stories are reported and printed with no reliance of it being fact or not. The public
is “meant” to believe everything they’re told and not question it. With it being so easy to say
assert an opinion so easily after a few taps, it can lead to investigations and front-page
headlines. Additionally, as newspapers and magazines have websites, articles can be posted
and received quicker than printed articles, and are updated more regularly.

Links to these articles can be posted to social media platforms – like Facebook and Twitter – as
well as being emailed and messaged directly between friends and family. Today, the media is
everywhere, and can easily get to places if needs be in ‘BREAKING NEWS’ scenarios. According
to Global Web Index, 54% of daily media time is online. Also, on a typical day, 12% of people
watch online TV, 10% listen to online radio, 12% read online press, 28% use social networking
sites, 13% are micro-blogging, 9% read or write blogs, and 17% do other things. This means
there is constant access to news and the goings on in the world, with the aid of links from
social media sites, as you can receive news so quickly, all information whether it’s true, false or
opinion. As modern society develops, knowledge on technology, social media websites and
accounts are being created at young ages, allowing youth to be more involved with what is
occurring amongst the world. To adjust to this updated society we are living in, changes are
being upheld to maintain an awareness on all the latest procedures. The latest equipment such
as iPads, laptops and smartphones are the biggest priority for a large percentage of young
adults.
