CHM 256 TUTORIAL 1

(CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY)

1. A 250 mL solution containing 0.348 g MgCI2.2H2O (131.25) was prepared. Calculate the
i) molarity of the solution
ii) concentration in % w/v of the solution
iii) concentration in parts per million (ppm) of the solution

2. Calculate the amount of calcium nitrate required to prepare

i) 100 mL 25% (w/v) Ca(NO3)2.
ii) 100 mL 200 ppm of Ca2+ from the solid chemical Ca(NO3)2.

3. A 2.6 g sample of a plant tissue was analysed and found to contain 3.6 µg zinc (Zn). What is
the concentration of zinc
i) in % (w/w)?
ii) in ppm?

4. A solution is prepared by dissolving 15.00 g NaNO3 (MW = 85.00) in 250 mL volumetric flask
and diluting it to volume. Calculate the concentration of the solution in ppm and in % (w/v).

5. Calculate the concentration of Al in ppm in 2.60 x 10-3 M AI2(SO4)3. (Atomic/molar mass: Al =

27.0, AI2(SO4)3 = 342.2)

6. A sodium chloride solution has a concentration of 1.20% w/v. Calculate its molar
concentration. (Molar mass of NaCI = 58.4)
,

7. A solution is prepared by dissolving 1.260 g AgNO3 (169.9) in a 250 mL volumetric flask and
diluting it to volume. What is the concentration of the solution in ppm?

8. A solution is prepared by dissolving 2.48 g MgSO 4 in a 500 mL water solution. Calculate the
concentration of MgSO4 in % w/v.

9. A 2.0 L solution was prepared by dissolving 6.34 g of KCI.MgCI 2.6H2O (277.85 g/mol) in
deionized water. [Atomic mass: K = 39.0, Cl = 35.5, Mg = 24.0, H = 1.0, O = 16.0] Calculate:

i) the molar analytical concentration of KCI.MgCI2 in this solution.

ii) the molar concentration of Mg2+.
iii) the molar concentration of Cl-.
iv) the weight/volume percentage of KCI.MgCI2.6H2O.
v) the number of millimoles of Cl- in 25.0 mL of this solution.
vi) ppm K+.
10. Methanol, CH3OH (MW = 32.0) has a density of 0.79 g/mL. If 27.0 mL methanol is added
with water to a volume of 250.0 mL, calculate the concentration of the methanol solution in
i) percent v/v
ii) percent w/v
iii) molarity

11. A commercial concentrated sulphuric acid, H2SO4 has been assayed to have a purity of 98%
(w/w) with a specific gravity of 1.84.
i) Calculate the volume of the concentrated H 2SO4, that would contain 40.0 g of pure
H2SO4. DH2O = 1.00000 g/mL @ 4oC

ii) Determine the volume of the concentrated H2SO4 in a) i) needed to prepare a 5.0 L of
0.10 M solution.

12. Commercial nitric acid, HNO3, has a molarity of 15.4M and a density of 1.409 g/mL. The
molar mass of HNO3 is 63.01 g/mol. Calculate the weight percent, % (w/w) of this acid.

13. The molarity of a NaOH solution is 0.001M. What is the concentration of this solution in ppm
assuming that the density of the solution is 1.0 g/mL.

14. A stock solution of Kl (166.0 g/mol) contains 107.6 g of Kl per liter of solution. The solution's
density at 20°C is 1.0781 g/mL. What is the concentration of the solution in
