TracPhone® HTS-series Technical Training Course

Study Guide
This study guide is a supplement to the eLearning course. It is not a substitute for that course,
nor does it supersede the information in the manuals.

HTS Service Overview

HTS Satellite Beams
KVH's global mini-VSAT Broadband HTS service uses next-generation high-throughput Ku-
band satellites. Two types of beams are used to maximize efficiency.

Spot Beams
• Each beam covers just hundreds of kilometers, enabling frequency reuse throughout the
footprint

• Provides much greater capacity and faster speeds

• Higher EIRP and G/T (antenna gain to noise temperature) improves RF reception

Wide Beams
• Each beam covers thousands of kilometers

• Ensures reliable service outside spot beams in low-traffic areas

Note: The latest global coverage footprint is available at www.kvh.com/htscoverage.

1
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

OTA Beam Map

Within the footprint of every satellite beam, an acquisition signaling carrier delivers an over-the-
air (OTA) beam map to all subscribers on the network. This map contains the latest coverage
footprints and tracking parameters of all service beams, ensuring HTS antennas will be able to
lock onto an available satellite and connect wherever the vessel travels within the global service
area.

2
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Satellite Network Infrastructure

Each satellite in the network is linked to one of the network's regional hubs installed at a teleport
(aka, "Land Earth Station"). All hubs are controlled by the Network Operations Center (NOC),
which monitors and manages the network.

Note: Although the teleport's antenna is far less susceptible to blockage than mobile antennas,
it still requires a line of sight to the satellite. Therefore, severe weather at the hub's location can
potentially cause a temporary service outage.

Automatic Beam Switching

The vessel's antenna switches among beams automatically, as directed by the hub. While
traversing beams, the vessel enjoys seamless communications. There is no interruption in
service.

3
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Frequency Ranges
The satellites' transponders transmit and receive on the following frequency ranges:

• Forward Link: 10.95-12.75 GHz

• Return Link: 14.0-14.5 GHz

Note: KVH's V-IP Series antennas can only receive signals down to 11.7 GHz. HTS Series
antennas are equipped with wideband RF feed components that support the extended
frequency range of HTS satellite signals.

4
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Dynamic Communications
Each vessel's connection to the hub is dynamically optimized for the current conditions (signal
strength degrades in bad weather and at the edge of the beam). The HTS network uses the
following technologies to make this possible:

Forward link
• DVB-S2 standard

• ACM (Adaptive Coding and Modulation)

Return link
• A-TDMA (Adaptive Time Division Multiple Access) protocol

5
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Internet Egress
All data traffic is routed over a private terrestrial network to one of three points of Internet egress
(North America, Europe, or Asia) via a KVH MegaPOP (point-of-presence access point). Its
firewalls, traffic shapers, and multiple forms of threat blocking provide cybersecurity protection.

HTS Series Antennas

TracPhone HTS series antenna systems provide the satellite link between the vessel and the
mini-VSAT Broadband HTS service. The system consists of two main components:

• Antenna: Using its integrated GPS, advanced reflector technology, and gyro
stabilization, the antenna automatically locates and tracks the satellite, even in rough
seas.

• Integrated CommBox Modem (ICM): The transceiver and "brain" of the system, the
ICM processes and routes all incoming and outgoing data traffic between the onboard
network and the satellite.

Note: Complete details about the TracPhone antenna are provided in the eLearning course for
each antenna model.

ICM Installation
Installation Guidelines
Before you start to install the ICM, you need to select a suitable mounting location. Consider the
following guidelines:

• Select a dry and well ventilated area away from heat or salt spray.

• Ensure the front panel will be easily accessible.

• Leave plenty of room at the rear panel to accommodate the cables with service loops.

• Select a location within 100 ft (30 m) of the antenna to use the supplied power/data
cable. Or order a longer cable from KVH.

• Ensure the location will provide adequate WiFi reception. Do not install in an area
surrounded by metal or near any electrical devices that emit RF noise.

Note: Establishing a wireless connection onboard a steel vessel might require a special WAP
and advanced networking expertise.

NMEA Heading Input

The HTS antenna requires a vessel heading input. Connect any NMEA 0183 talker to the 2-
position terminal strip connector, as shown here. Then plug the terminal strip connector into the
back of the ICM.

Make sure the NMEA talker is configured to transmit any one (and just one) of the following
heading messages at 4800 baud:

• $--HDG

• $--HDM

• $--HDT

• $--OSD

• $--THS

• $--VHW

IMPORTANT! The ICM cannot accept heading messages that conform to the NMEA 2000
standard.

18
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Heading Message Verification

Make sure the message includes the checksum, identifiable by a *xx field at the end of the data
sentence.

You can check the message supplied by the NMEA 0183 talker by connecting its output to your
laptop using an RS422-to-USB adapter and viewing its data stream using PuTTY,
HyperTerminal, or other terminal emulator.

19
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Optional Position Input

If desired, you can provide a position input to serve as a backup to the antenna's internal GPS.
The ICM can accept a $--RMC message from a NMEA 0183 talker.

To supply both heading and position to the ICM, you can either connect a NMEA 0183 talker
that transmits both messages, or connect two devices using a NMEA data multiplexer.

20
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

AC Power Supply
The ICM is powered from the vessel's AC power supply. Generally, there are three options for
connecting AC power.

Single Phase AC Power

The ICM is designed to run on 3-wire single-phase AC power. Voltage between hot-neutral and
hot-ground should each measure between 100-240 VAC.

Two Phase Power with Leakage Current

The ICM will function normally, but a small amount of current will leak onto ship's ground.

IMPORTANT! Get permission from the owner or ship's electrician before running the system on
two-phase power.

21
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Two Phase Power with Isolation Transformer

If the vessel is limited to two-phase power, and leakage current is unacceptable, install an
isolation transformer.

22
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Grounding
Perform the following steps to properly ground the ICM.

1. Run a ground wire from the ICM rear panel to ship's ground.

2. Once all wiring is complete, plug the ICM power cable into vessel AC power.

3. Before you turn on the system, measure the difference in potential between the ICM
chassis and ship's ground. Make sure it does not exceed 2 VAC and 2 VDC.

WARNING! Failure to ground the ICM properly to ship's ground will cause an unsafe
floating ground condition, risking damage to the system and electric shock, potentially
resulting in DEATH!

34
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

No-Transmit Zones
The TracPhone antenna transmits radio frequency (RF) energy that is potentially harmful.
Therefore, the antenna should be mounted well above any areas accessible to passengers or
crew.

If mounting the antenna near an accessible area is unavoidable, you can configure up to two
no-transmit zones to prevent transmissions in hazardous directions. Whenever the antenna
points within a configured no-transmit zone, its transmitter will be inhibited.

IMPORTANT! The RF radiation hazard area varies among antenna models, since each
TracPhone antenna has its own elevation range and transmitter power level. Complete details
are provided in the eLearning course for each antenna model.

35
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Determining Zone Ranges

To program a no-transmit zone in the system, you first need to determine the necessary
range(s) in degrees.

Azimuth Range
• Azimuths are relative to the antenna's Forward arrow, pointing toward the bow.

• Set the azimuths in clockwise order.

• Range must span at least 5 degrees.

36
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Elevation Range
• Only applies to V7-HTS and V11-HTS. V3-HTS no-transmit zones are limited to
azimuth range only.

• Set the elevations in ascending order.

• Range must span at least 5 degrees.

37
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Setting No-Transmit Zones

Follow these steps to configure no-transmit zones:

1. At the web interface, click the Settings tab. Then click No-Transmit Zones.

5. Enter the ranges for Zone 1 and Zone 2.

6. Click Save Settings.

7. At the confirmation message, click Save.

38
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Tracking Avoidance Zones

In an ideal installation, the antenna has a clear view of the sky in all directions and no other
radiating equipment is nearby. However, an ideal installation is not always achievable,
especially on smaller vessels.

Tracking avoidance zones allow you to define areas where partial blockage or RF interference
are likely to cause marginal reception or intermittent performance. If the antenna starts tracking
a satellite in the direction of a tracking avoidance zone, it will switch to a different satellite if one
is available.

Taking a couple minutes to set up tracking avoidance zones can make a huge difference in the
antenna's performance and customer satisfaction!

39

Voice Connections
VoIP Prioritization
KVH's enhanced voice service – voice-over-IP (VoIP) optimized for satellite communications –
allows customers to make and receive calls via the TracPhone system and the mini-VSAT
Broadband service.

Voice traffic is given priority on the network over standard Internet data to ensure the highest
quality voice connections at all times.

46
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

How the Voice Service Works

Calls from the ship are routed as follows.

Step 1
The phone sends the phone number to the ICM as an analog signal.

Step 2
The ICM converts the signal into digital voice-over-IP (VoIP) data.

Step 3
The TracPhone antenna transmits the data over the mini-VSAT Broadband network to an
Internet-based SIP (session initiation protocol) server.

Step 4
The digital VoIP data is converted back into analog.

Step 5
The analog signal is routed via a proxy server to the appropriate public switched telephone
network (PSTN).

Step 6
The telephone network's carrier completes the call to ring the desired shore phone line.

47
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Connecting Phones
Connect the vessel's analog phone(s) or PABX to the "Voice Line" phone jacks on the ICM.

Customers may choose the country code and area code of the vessel phone number(s) during
activation. Line 1 is the main number.

Note: V7-HTS and V11-HTS customers can connect a second line for an additional monthly
fee. V3-HTS is limited to a single phone line.

48
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Placing a Call from the Vessel

Perform these steps to place a call from the vessel:

1. Make sure the TracPhone system is online.

2. Pick up the handset on any phone connected to the ICM. You should hear a dial tone. If
you don't, check the phone line status on the ICM web interface's Home page.

3. Dial the phone number you wish to call.

Note: Remember, when you place a call, your voice travels to a satellite in space then back to
Earth. This transit will cause a delay (approximately 1/2 second) in your conversation.

Note: For information on call charges, refer to the rate sheets available at
www.kvh.com/mvbservice.

49
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Dialing Sequences
The dialing sequence you use to place a call depends on the vessel's Line 1 phone number.

To call a number outside the country assigned to Line 1, dial:

<international prefix> +

<country code> +

<area code> +

<local phone number>

To call a number within the country assigned to Line 1, dial:

<area code> +

<local phone number>

To call a number within the country and area code assigned to Line 1, dial:
<local phone number>

50
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Calls to the Vessel's Phone Number

People on shore who call the vessel are billed international and long-distance charges based on
the vessel’s phone number, and not on the location of the vessel. Therefore, when setting up
phone numbers during activation, it is advisable for customers to select the same country code
and area/city code that they use at home (an additional fee will apply). This will allow family,
friends, and business associates in that region to call the vessel as an in-country call.

In the example shown here, people in L.A. who call the vessel's U.S.-based phone number will
not be charged international fees.

Note: Only V7-HTS and V11-HTS support a second phone line.

51
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Calls to Virtual Numbers

For an additional fee, KVH offers customers the ability to assign up to five virtual phone
numbers to each vessel phone line. Each of these numbers can be set up with a different
country code and area/city code, allowing people within those regions to avoid international or
long-distance charges when they call the vessel.

In the example shown here, the customer's company has offices in Tokyo and Melbourne.
Therefore, they set up Japanese and Australian virtual numbers so that their employees can call
the vessel without running up an international phone bill.

To set up virtual numbers, customers need to call KVH’s Airtime Services Department.

52
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Accessing a Voice Account

Customers can manage various aspects of their voice account online at KVH's Enhanced VoIP
Service Account Center.

Go to https://kvh.myaccountcenter.net and log in with the customer's primary phone number

and PIN (provided during service activation).

53

Customers can easily access all of these features from the main "My Information" page.

54
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Additional Phone Lines

(V7-HTS and V11-HTS Only)

If the vessel requires more than two phone lines, you may install a multimedia terminal adapter
(MTAs) to enable two additional lines. This allows the system to sustain three or more
simultaneous calls. An additional monthly fee applies to each additional line.

Note: Only lines 1 and 2 are prioritized over general data traffic.

55
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Crew Calling
(V7-HTS and V11-HTS Only)

KVH's crew calling service allows crew and charter passengers to place ship-to-shore calls
using prepaid calling cards. KVH tracks crew usage separately from the ship's standard phone
service. There are two options:

• Install the Crew Calling Gateway - Connect the Gateway to one of the ICM's User
Ethernet ports.

• Enable crew calling service on an existing voice line - Contact KVH Network Services
([email protected]) for details.

56
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Network Connections
HTS Data Channels
The TracPhone system provides three separate data channels to/from the vessel. The first
channel is for VoIP (voice over IP) data, which is given the highest priority on the HTS network.

The other two channels are for Internet data:

• High-speed: Fastest possible speeds; uses Open airtime plan that includes an allotment
of data usage; overage charges apply

• Unlimited (V7-HTS and V11-HTS only): Minimal speeds; uses Fixed-rate airtime plan

During a V7-HTS or V11-HTS service activation, the customer must choose both a High Speed
rate plan and an Unlimited Use rate plan. Data usage over each channel gets counted against
the plan associated with it. As you will learn in this lesson, ICM network configurations and data
management tools are available to help the customer manage data usage over each channel.

* Unlimited channel not available on V3-HTS

57
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

ICM Network Connections

The ICM includes four Ethernet ports and a built-in wireless access point (WAP) that can be
configured in a variety of ways to meet your customer's needs.

Note: The range of the ICM's WAP depends on the layout and structure of the vessel. For
example, wireless signals degrade when passing through bulkheads and near metal masses.

The ICM's built-in router assigns IP addresses to all connected devices that are set up for
DHCP addressing.

58
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Selecting a Network Configuration

The most common configurations can be selected directly from the ICM's web interface. Go to
Settings > Network Settings.

The network configuration can also be set online at the mini-VSAT Manager (www.mykvh.com).
Login credentials for myKVH are provided to the customer following activation.

If none of these configurations meet your customer's needs, KVH can set up a custom
configuration. Ask the customer to contact KVH Network Services at
[email protected].

Global Static IP Service

With a Global Static IP address assigned to a network device onboard the vessel, parties on
shore can access that device directly over the Internet. This setup has the following key
advantages for commercial ships:

• Enables remote monitoring and IT management from shore

• Allows a vessel computer to access a secure VPN (virtual private network)

68
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Static IP Setup
Customers request Global Static IP service by filling out the online form available at
www.kvh.com/staticip. (An additional monthly fee will apply.) The TracPhone system must be
activated and it must remain online throughout the 24-hour setup period.

When the customer receives an email from KVH confirming that the static IP address has been
set up, the desired network device can be configured with the static IP data provided in the
email.

Local Web Caching

A web cache on the ICM temporarily stores the content of web pages the user visits, so they will
load faster on subsequent visits. This local web cache should stay enabled to save bandwidth
and ensure the best possible web browsing experience. However, if you suspect it is preventing
a website from loading properly, you can disable it at the ICM's web interface. Go to Settings >
Network Settings.

72
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Minimizing Data Usage

The configurations of operating systems, web browsers, and applications generally assume an
unlimited, always-on broadband connection. So they will often try to connect to the Internet on
their own to download updates and transfer files. They will also operate without any regard to
the amount of traffic they generate to perform routine tasks.

To eliminate unnecessary background activity and minimize the amount of data consumed,
customers should follow the guidelines provided in Tips for Minimizing Data Usage, one of the
topics available in the ICM's Help (see topic under Data Connections at
www.kvh.com/v7htshelp).

IMPORTANT! The customer is responsible for all data transferred to/from the vessel, including
inadvertent downloads by applications running in the background.

73
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Usage Alerts
At the mini-VSAT Manager (www.mykvh.com), the customer can set up automatic email and/or
SMS text alerts to notify when data usage reaches certain thresholds. Alerts can be sent when
the vessel has consumed a certain percentage of its monthly allowance and/or when usage
exceeds that allowance by a certain amount.

Note: Refer to the myKVH mini-VSAT Manager video course for details.

Troubleshooting
Basic Troubleshooting
Follow these initial steps to troubleshoot any type of system problem:

1. Check the status indicators on the front of the ICM. Look for an error message on the
web interface or iPhone app.

2. If the antenna cannot find the satellite, check for blockage around the antenna. Also
make sure the vessel is located in the HTS coverage area (see
www.kvh.com/htscoverage).

3. Try to connect to the KVH test page (test.minivsat.net). If you can, but can't access the
Internet, contact KVH Technical Support. The account might not be activated.

4. Ensure all components are powered up and wired properly (refer to the Installation
Guide).

5. Make sure the system is running the latest version of software.

6. Restart the system.

ICM Web Page and App

As explained in earlier lessons, you can find system status information on the ICM's web
interface and iPhone app. Any errors will be reported on the Home and Support pages of the
web interface and the app, in addition to the ICM's front panel display.

Note: View the Error Messages List provided with this course to read a description of each
possible error message (for informational purposes only - you do not need to know the details of
any individual error messages to pass the certification exam).

Restarting the Hardware

If you cannot find the cause of a system problem, you might try restarting it to see if the problem
clears during startup. You can restart the following components from the Support page of the
ICM's web interface:

• Antenna

• MTA (built-in VoIP device)

• All (entire system)

80
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Voice Checks
In addition to the basics, follow these steps if you can access the Internet but cannot make a
voice call:

1. Check the phone number. Make sure you're dialing the appropriate international prefix
and country code, if necessary (see the Voice Connections lesson for details).

2. Check the My Phone status on the web interface. If it shows "Unable to Register Voice
Service," contact KVH Technical Support. There might be an account issue.

3. Restart the MTA.

4. Dial ***1 on the phone. You should hear the MTA's IP address. If you hear "0.0.0.0," the
MTA has not received an IP address. Contact KVH Technical Support.

5. Check the phone's connection to the ICM.

6. Replace the phone.

81
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Data Checks
In addition to the basics, follow these steps if you cannot access the Internet:

1. Ensure the computer's TCP/IP properties are configured properly (DHCP or static).

2. Connect your computer directly to the "User Ethernet 1" port on the back of the ICM and
restart the computer. If you can then access the Internet, there is a problem with the
vessel's local area network.

3. Check the network connections using the Ping command, as described on the next
page.

82
TracPhone HTS-series Study Guide

Ping Command
The Ping command allows you to check an onboard computer's connection to the ICM, as well
as to the Internet. Enter ping commands at your PC's command prompt. (To get to the
command prompt, press Windows Logo key + R, then enter "cmd".)

To check the ICM connection, enter ping <IP Address>. You can find the ICM's IP address in
the LCD menu. Make sure no packets are lost. Normal response time is < 10 ms.

Operational Log
You can capture an operational log at any time from the Support page of the web interface or
iPhone app. This log is extremely valuable for troubleshooting, as it records all messages
generated by the antenna. You can also save the log as a text file, which you can email to KVH
Technical Support for analysis.

Note: Check out the sample log file provided with this course to see the level of detail this log
provides (you do not need to know any of its details to pass the exam).

84

Event Log
While the operational log captures all messages generated by the antenna within a certain
amount of time, the event log is always running in the background and keeps a historical record
of all state and error messages generated by the antenna.

Note: Alerts are system events and status messages that require no user action (informational
only). Alarms are error conditions that generally need to be fixed to restore full performance and
functionality.

You can find the event log on the Support page of the web interface or iPhone app. Like the
operational log, the event log can be saved to a file.
