Preliminaries-MEFC-109

This document outlines the course details for Vibration Engineering ME 159. The course aims to introduce important concepts of vibration and how it affects machine performance. It covers modeling mechanical systems, deriving differential equations, and evaluating responses to different excitations. The course is divided into 5 modules over 14 lessons covering topics like basic vibration concepts, free and forced vibration, general forcing conditions, and vibration measurement and control. Student work will be evaluated based on learning activities, a midterm, and final exam. Upon completing the course, students should be able to model and analyze mechanical vibration systems and understand vibration measurement and control techniques. References for further reading are also provided.

COURSE OUTLINE

 COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is intended to introduce the important concepts of vibration as it

affects the operation and performance of machine components. It involves modeling
of mechanical systems, derivation of the differential equations for such systems and
its varying solutions (responses) based on different excitations. This course is divided
into 5 modules and also subdivided into lessons which covers the sub-topics of the
module. At the end of each lesson, learning activities are provided to assess your
understanding and may require you to conduct more research to cover other
important concepts and to meet the intended learning outcomes.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following:

1. Model a mechanical system in terms of its basic vibration elements.

2. Set up the differential equation with appropriate boundary / initial
conditions corresponding to the mechanical system.
3. Evaluate the response for certain simple excitations.
4. Understand the concept and techniques of vibration measurement and
control.

 COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The following course requirements are used in this course and are to be rated
accordingly:

1. Midterm and final examinations

2. Individual learning activity with research work after every lesson

Classworks:
1. Classworks (learning activities/research works) are posted through Google
Classroom and will be given after every lesson.
2. Classworks should be accomplished regardless if it is submitted late or not for
the sake of those with limited internet connection.
3. Classworks will be provided to students who do not have the means to access
online and shall likewise submit a hard copy of their classworks.
 GRADING SYSTEM
Learning Activities - 60%

Midterm/Final Examination - 40%

Total 100%
Computation of Grades:

Midterm Grade = 0.60 (Learning Activities) + 0.40 (Midterm Test)

Final Term Grade = 0.60 (Learning Activities) + 0.40 (Final term Test)
Final Grade = 0.60 (Final Term Grade) + 0.40 (Midterm Grade)
