V. ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1: EVALUATE ME!
Critically evaluate each editorial cartoon with its symbol used. Mention the
effectiveness of these symbols for the understanding of the readers.
1 We can see the label 'rule of law' and 'traditional politics' kicked by the guy who
we know is the President of the Philippines, Duterte. We can tell from the symbols
that can be seen in the editorial cartoon that the point of view of this editorial is that
the rule of law has been forgotten, so what operates is the ruler's law.
2. On the ground we can see a big man that we can tell that represents the people of Marawi
and the two men firing gun, who clearly shows the battle between the local government forces
against the terrorist party. The mark "looming humanitarian crisis in Marawi" can also be seen, which
makes it easy to know how the siege severely ravaged the lives of the unfortunate people of Marawi.
Who have lost not only their homes but their livelihoods as well. What aggravates people is that the
government has not reacted to the needs of the displaced families. People died of malnutrition,
exhaustion and illnesses due to lack of medical equipment, food and water.
3. A big bad guy identified as China stealing the little guy's candy, which clearly
represents Filipino for its symbolic objects such as hat and local bag, the U.S. man behind
with a friend's face and an enemy's shadow, and the guy from Vietnam behind China. We
can see that the cartoon portrayed the problem of Chinese bullying the Philippines, taking
over the Scarborough Shoal, and the illegal act of constructing artificial island bases in the
waters of the Philippines, in addition to prohibiting fishermen from fishing on their own
waters, badly enough to make the Chinese rich to harass us.
.
4. We can see the rough path that the student who holds a heavy bag symbolizes the
program k-12 hardly navigates and the education's pointed course. The goal of K-12
was fantastic and if we look at it in the long term, the product is a more educated
person and more resources for everyone locally and internationally, but the
implementation of this initiative somehow failed to take into consideration the pre-
existing education issues that have yet to be addressed, such as the shortage of
teachers and teacher preparedness, lack of school buildings and the number of
dropouts.
ACTIVITY 2: CREATE AND REACT!
Cut out an editorial cartoon from any newspaper where English is the medium and
write a reflection based on the meaning it implies. Then, evaluate the effectiveness of
the symbol used in the cartoon.
The editorial cartoon effectively communicates the message from the symbolisms he
uses and from the characters facial expression in the illustration. Covid -19 not just
affects the citizen in the Philippines but also the economy. The unprivileged citizens
are the most affected in the pandemic they don’t have jobs because most of the place
they worked are shutdown or they got fired because their work can’t pay them at all.
Due to this lockdown they lost their income and barely survive this pandemic. The
operation lockdown is making the people poorer than before its making them to beg
the government for supplies because they don’t have money at all.

VIII. REFLECTION
1. What is the most important thing you learned in this module?
In this module, the most important things I learned are the strategies
or tips on how to construct an editorial cartoon from conceptualization by
successful drawing techniques in order to be able to articulate my editorial
point of view and convey it effectively to readers, thereby affecting their views
on the issues.
2. Give at least 3 major takeaways from the topics presented in this module.
In order to educate, control, argue, condemn, praise and view a certain
issue, editorial cartooning is an illustration of opinion in cartoon form.
Composition, balance and unity are the elements of the editorial
cartooning.
A good editorial should provide perspectives, impact and alter
attitudes, and the message should be conveyed efficiently without too
many explanations and important to the opinion of the public.
3. What was most challenging or least interesting activity you performed?
Drawing my own editorial cartoon from the concept presented is the
most difficult task for me, because it is already the application of all the stuff I
learned in this module, drawing is very challenging for me. As the activities
presented expanded my outlook on the various issues surrounding me, I
cannot name a less interesting task.
4. What do you want to learn more about?
I want to learn how to write a proper and detailed news article more.
5. What can /should you do with what you learned?
All the knowledge and skills that I acquired from doing this module will
be applied, as i try to create my own editorial cartoon. Additionally, as a future
educator, I can also use these knowledge and skills to train students If given a
chance.
