Module 3 VANDERZANDER

This document is from the Electrical Engineering Technology Department of the Technological University of the Philippines. It provides an introduction to frequency, period, and time for alternating voltages and currents. Examples are given to demonstrate how to calculate frequency from period and period from frequency. Practice problems are also provided for students to calculate unknown frequencies from given periods and unknown periods from given frequencies.

Module 3

Title: Frequency, Period and Time

Introduction

When a sine wave of alternating voltage is connected across a load, the current that flows
in the circuit is also a sine wave.

Frequency and Period

The number of cycles per second is called frequency, it is indicated by the symbol f and is
expressed in hertz (Hz). One cycle per second equals o one hertz, thus 60 cycle per second
equals to 60 hertz. The amount of time for the completion of 1 cycle is period. It is indicated
by the symbol T for time and is expressed second (s). Frequency and period are reciprocals
of each other.
Example:

1. Determine the periodic time for frequencies of: (a) 50 Hz, (b) 20 kHz

(a) 50 Hz (b) 20 kHz

1 1
(a) Periodic Time T = = = 20ms or 0.02s
𝑓 50

1 1
(b) Periodic Time T = = = 50ms or 0.05 s
𝑓 20000

Solution:

2. Determine the frequencies for periodic time s of (a) 4ms, (b) 4 µs

Solution:

1 1 1000
(a) Frequency f = 𝑡 = = 4ms= = 250 Hz

1 1 100000
(b) Frequency f= = = = 250KHz or 0.25MHz

(b) 42.3 s ?

2. An alternating current complete 5 cycles in 8 ms. what is its frequency?

3. Calculate the frequency for the following periodic times: (a) 5 ms, (b) 50 µs (c) 0.2
s

4. An alternating current complete 4 cycles in 5 ms. what is its frequency?

5. Determine the periodic time for the following frequencies: (a) 2.5 Hz, (b) 100 Hz,
and (c) 40 kJz
