1. Fill the gaps with the correct form of the verb in brackets to make third conditional
sentences.
a) If I had heard (hear) the weather forecast, I would have taken (take) an umbrella with me.
b) If I I had listened (listen) to her, this wouldn’t have happened (not happen).
c) You wouldn’t have dropped (drop) the vase if you had been (be) more careful.
d) If I had seen (see) her, I would have said (say) hello.
e) They would have caught (catch) a taxi if they had had (have) enough money.
f) If he hadn’t been so nervous (not/be) so nervous, he wouldn’t have failed (not/fail) the exam.

3. Rewrite the following sentences. Use the third conditional.

a) You were very rude, that’s why she got upset.


If you hadn’t been so rude, she wouldn’t have got upset.
b) I had a good time because you were there with me.
If you hadn’t been there with me, I wouldn’t have had a good time.
c) Lisa missed the bus. As a result, she was late for work.
If Lisa hadn’t missed the bus, she wouldn’t have been late for work.
d) She didn’t follow my advice, so she didn’t make a profit.
If she had followed my advice, she would have made a profit.
e) He refused because you didn’t ask him nicely.
If you had asked him nicely, he wouldn’t have refused.
f) You didn’t put the milk in the fridge, so it went bad.
If you had put the milk in the fridge, it wouldn’t have gone bad.
g) I didn’t check the bill. Therefore, I didn’t see the mistake.
If I had checked the bill, I would have seen the mistake.
h) You acted foolishly, so you didn’t get that job.
If you hadn’t acted foolishly, you would have got that job.
i) The dog bit him because he panicked.
If he hadn’t panicked, the dog wouldn’t have bitten him.
j) Peter ate three chocolate bars and then he had a terrible stomach ache.
If Peter hadn’t eaten three chocolate bars, he wouldn’t have had a terrible stomach ache.
