Lesson Plan Final

The lesson plan provides activities to teach English language learners (ELLs) about different topics. For kindergarten students, they will create an alphabet booklet drawing pictures for each letter. First grade students will make their own dictionary choosing words to define. Fifth grade students will research and present on cultural holidays. The plans aim to improve ELL students' language skills through hands-on projects incorporating their own cultures and learning about others.

Lesson Plan for Grade 5, ELL Students

Prepared by Ms. Savage

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Teach students about the different holidays throughout the year. Christmas, Ramadan, Day of the Dead,
Easter, Hanukkah, etc.

OBJECTIVES
1. After getting assigned a certain holiday, students will learn about other holidays around the
world. As they are learning about their holiday, they will also learn about the different types of
cultures people associate with that holiday.
2. By writing and researching the holiday with a partner, they will learn how to write a book report.
3. They will present it to the class and learn good presentation skills. When presenting, other
students will get the chance to learn more about other holidays (besides the one they made).

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Computer to type a paper
2. Books rented from the school library

VERIFICATION

1
I will check to see if the students learned from the assignment by going over their book reports
and listening to their presentation.

ACTIVITY
The students are to write an informational paper about a holiday they are assigned to and they
will present it to the class. The students will be paired up with partners. The partners will help each other
read through their holiday books and work on their paper together then present it together. Hopefully
having a partner, it will help ELL students understand better of what is expected of them. That way they
will have someone there who can show them what needs to be done and they will get a chance to work
with another student.

In the paper, they will explain what holiday they were assigned by researching the history, food,
traditions, where it is celebrated, and who celebrates that specific holiday. There will be 5 different pages
with facts that relate to the topics mentioned before. They will learn what a table of contents is and use it
in their paper.

By incorporating different holidays, it will give ELL students a chance to hear about their own
holidays and culture in the classroom as well as learn about new cultures that their peers partake in.

Lesson Plan for Grade 3, ELL Students
Prepared by Ms. Savage

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Teach students about different cultures by having a show and tell in the classroom. Examples of
items to bring in are items are very important to them and their family that they might use every day or on
special occasions. It can even be something that ties them to their heritage.

Examples are:

● Fun instruments their family might use

● Books they read at home
● Old photos
● Food

OBJECTIVES
1. By teaching the students about how everyone has different cultures and heritage, the students will
learn more about their peers and even themselves. They will learn that everyone celebrates
differently and has grown up differently.

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. An object to share with the class

VERIFICATION
● I will email parents to let them know about the assignment and that the students will need their
help picking out something to show to the class
● I will listen to their presentations to make sure they understood the assignment.

3
ACTIVITY
Students will use their family for resources and ask them questions about their heritage and what
type of objects tie them to that. Students will plan to create a presentation about the object they will be
bringing that are examples of things that are symbolic of their cultural traditions. They will present it to
the class and tell everyone why it’s important to them and their family. If they bring in food they can
share it with the class or whoever would like to try it. A lot of people have different cultures and many
different beliefs (Egbert, J.). Sharing those with the class would be fun because the students would learn
a lot more about each other.

Lesson Plan for Grade 1, ELL Students
Prepared by Ms. Savage

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Students will create their own dictionary of words from each letter of the alphabet they are trying
to learn. This will help students understand words they might now know and research what it means.

OBJECTIVES
● By having the students create their own dictionary, they will learn new words that they didn’t
know before.
● They will learn how to use an actual dictionary to find the words.
● They will gain better language skills while learning new words.

MATERIALS NEEDED
● Paper
● Staples
● Crayons
● dictionary to look up words

VERIFICATION
● I will read over their dictionaries to make sure they were able to figure out the words they
picked.
● If they got the words wrong, I would write them all down and go over them with the
class.

ACTIVITY
Students are to label each page with a letter from the alphabet and pick a word they are trying to
learn and put it under the appropriate letter. They can draw a picture about the word so that way it can
help them understand more about what that word means. They can use a real dictionary to find their
words.

5
This activity will really help ELL students because they will get the chance to teach themselves
words they don’t understand. It’s good that they are using the dictionary to teach themselves because they
will get the chance to see many other words in the dictionary while teaching themselves what the words
mean. Then I will get the chance to correct them and help them understand more about the meaning of the
words.

Lesson Plan for Kindergarten, ELL Students

Prepared by Ms. Savage

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

6
Students will create an alphabet booklet and draw pictures that relate to the letters of the alphabet
in order to understand each letter.

OBJECTIVES
● Students will learn how to identify words with the letters of the alphabet and put them in the
correct order.

MATERIALS NEEDED
● Paper
● Crayons
● Stapler

VERIFICATION
● I will look over their alphabets and drawings to make sure they got them all correct and I will let
them know if they made any mistakes.

ACTIVITY
Students will write each letter of the alphabet on different pieces of paper and they make a
drawing that starts with that letter of the alphabet. This is helpful for ELL students because at that age
they may be struggling to understand the alphabet and matching up words that start with certain letters.

7
Reflection
When creating lesson plans for ELL students, it’s important that you make sure you are

including them as well as all the other student’s ELLs move through different stages of learning

differently (Egbert, J.). If your ELL student has a problem with learning a new word, having

them create their own dictionary could be very helpful. It would give them the opportunity to

study an English dictionary and find the words that confuse them and then teach themselves what

it means. Having ELLs do a project about the different holidays can help them learn about their

other classmates and learn how to write an English book report. Pairing them up with a partner

can make the process go a little easier. Then having them share it with the rest of the class will

help their speaking and presentation skills. Show and tell is also another good activity to do with

ELL students because they will get the chance to share with the class something about

themselves. Normally children are very excited to show something new about themselves to

others so I think the students would have a fun time doing this activity. Creating an alphabet

8
booklet with pictures will help ELL students connect certain words to their correct letters. It will

also help them learn how to sound out words and figure out how to spell them correctly.
