3-1 Assignment

IP addresses and DNS allow devices to be identified and located on a network. A server provides services to clients like assigning IP addresses. A VPN extends a private network over public networks like the internet to securely connect remote clients. Firewalls monitor network traffic and block unauthorized access based on security rules. A LAN connects devices within an organization, while a WAN connects multiple LANs, allowing remote access via technologies like VPN.

1.

Define the following IT concepts, and describe their role and importance within a
network:
1. IP address and DNS
2. Server and client
3. VPN
4. Firewalls
5. LANs and WANs

 IP address – Firstly, IP address stands for Internet Protocol address. It is a numerical label that
each device connected to a computer network has and it uses the Internet Protocol for
communication.

 DNS – Better known as a Domain Name System. It is a series of servers that converts something
like Google.com and turns it into a IP address such as 8.8.8.8 for example.

 Server and Client –

o A client is a computer hardware device or software that accesses a service made
available by a server. A client is the device (computer or phone for example) that is
assigned a IP address from the DHCP server.
o A server is a physical computer dedicated to run services to serve the needs of other
computers. Within a network a server can automatically assign an IP address to a site
instead of a person having to manually assign one.

 VPN – VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It takes a private network and extends it across a
public network thus allowing users to send and receive data across a shared or public network
as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network.

 Firewalls – Is a security network system that monitors what comes and goes from your network
based on predetermined security rules. It helps to protect your computer from virus and
unwanted malware to a point.

 LANs – A LAN is a Local Area Network. A LANs interconnects computer’s that exist in a small to
each other. Such as in a residence.

 WANs – A WAN is a Wide Area Network. It connects LAN’s together allowing the LANs to
communicate with each other.
Justin Altuve’s Home Business:

Wireless Router/Firewall

IP Phone

Cable Modem

Digital Camera
Laptop

Desktop PC Printer

In the above model we have a cable modem that connects to a wireless router and to the Desktop PC.
Now for Justin Altuve’s home business he has a firewall, and most wireless router’s have a firewall built
into them, so the needed firewall is already built into this scenario. Attached to the wireless router is the
printer, IP phone and laptop. The digital camera is attached to the laptop as it frequently syncs to it as
Justin Altuve is a photographer and must download his work.

The first network configuration I would recommend for Mr. Altuve is using a server to use as DHCP
server to set up client devices with IP addresses. I would then recommend he use Google’s DNS and
utilize their IP address for the office devices. Next the I would explain that a firewall would be needed
and that it should allow what Mr. Altuve needs to have on it and block everything else. His home office
and corporate office are LANs but the two are connected by a WANs so I would also recommend Mr.
Altuve will need a VPN connection. That will allow him to connect to his corporate office location from
home securely.
