Exercise 2. Gmos in Food: Soybeans

The document discusses genetically modified soybeans. GM soybeans are resistant to pests and disease, and tolerant of herbicides, allowing for less herbicide use. This reduces production costs and exposure to chemicals for farmers. GM soybeans also reduce the need for broad-spectrum insecticides by being resistant to specific insect pests, lowering environmental impacts. The key benefit of GM soybeans is reducing chemical pesticide and herbicide usage in soybean farming.

Exercise 2.

GMOs in Food
Instructions: search the internet for edible products that make use of GMOs as GMOs as
ingredients. Choose a particular GMO and research on it. Paste a photo of your chosen
GMO and answer the question: How does the use of a GMO ingredient in the product
reduce the drawbacks of the same product that use non-GMO ingredient?

Soybeans
The GM soybean plant is resistant to pests and disease as well as being tolerant of
herbicides that are most effective, allowing for less herbicide use overall. Genetically modified
(GM) Soybean is purposely altered so that the crop can achieve specific goals for the farmers,
which is to create a better, healthier, and more useful product. This Soybean has higher level of
hardiness and able to withstand an infestation of weeds or pests to still produce a good yield.
The major advantage of GM Soybean is that it reduces the need to use broad-spectrum
insecticides. Most pesticides that are sprayed onto crops kill all insects, even the harmless and
beneficial ones. While for GM Soybean, insecticides are specific to a few insects that are
susceptible to the toxin and only kill insects that have ingested GM Soybean. The GM Soybean
consumes less usage of chemical pesticides resulting to lower cost of production and reduction
of farmers’ exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Exercise 3 Bioethical Dilemma using GMOs

Instructions: Read the article SC reverses ruling on Bt
'talong' tests below. Then answer the questions that
follow.

Questions:
1. What are the relevant facts of this case?

First is that the decision that stopped the testing and issuance of permits concerning
genetically modified organisms where taken back by the high court. Second was that there was
no commercial distribution of the GM eggplants ergo there was really no issue nor a
controversy to act upon. Third is that GMO’s are not really a threat if used properly, it is just
misunderstood by people since it is a very coming of age body of knowledge that seems to be
too good to be true.

2. What are some ethical questions or concerns raised in this case?

That GMO’s should not be taken lightly since not only it talks about the sustenance of
the masses but also the animals that it feeds. That taking a step forward should have a permit
or supervision of the authorities that oversees the process.

3. Who are the stakeholders in this situation? Who are affected by the decisions made?

The stake holders were the Supreme Court along with the departments such as EMB,
CLP, UPLB, and UP, since they were the ones that formulated the petitions and approved it. The
leap towards advancement was made possible and resumed because of them.

4. What values influence the decision of each stakeholder?

The obedience and transparency for starters, since having a permit is a big deal when it
comes to things like high science especially when it concerns biology.

5. What are some possible actions and their consequences?

If some distributing and bad happens and it turns out that the GM plant that was spread
wasn’t healthy for consumption and may contain side effects. Definitely the consequence will
be the health of the people who already consumed the product.

6. What do you consider to be the best action and why?

I suggest doing more tests laboratory and the results should be under the correct and
honest process of approval for the safety of everyone, because the Philippines could really
benefit from the GMO’s since it offers a great deal of potential we can harness if just supported.
