Micro Center Tech Support - How To Set Up A Tenda Router As A Repeater

This document provides instructions for setting up a Tenda router as a wireless repeater to extend the range of an existing Tenda router network. The steps are: 1. Connect a computer to the second "repeater" router via Ethernet and access its configuration page. 2. Change the SSID of the repeater router to identify it as extending the primary router. 3. Ensure both routers use the same wireless channel. 4. Enable the wireless distribution system (WDS) settings on the repeater router and enter the MAC address of the primary router. This allows the repeater to connect to and extend the primary router's network.

C hanne l
This guide shows you how to setup a Tenda router as a repeater. These instructions require that you already have a Micro C e nte r O nline Shopping
working Tenda router. If you don't have your Tenda router configured, consult the Tenda documentation on setup.

For the purpose of these instructions, the router that is hooked up to the modem will be identified as "Router 1", and FACEBOOK
the second router will be identified as "Router 2" which will be setup as the repeater. Before starting, you need to
have a wired connection to both routers using a computer and any available yellow port. Micro Center stores

1. C onnect the computer to Router 2 using an Ethernet cable. Go from the computer to the yellow port on the
router.
2. Once connected, open your web browser and type in the address bar "192.168.0.1". Press Enter.

3. You will be prompted for a username and password unless they have been changed from the default. The
default username and password is "admin" without quotes.
4. Under SSID, change Tenda to Tenda 1 to identify it as Router 1.

It’s not ne ce ssary for both of the route rs to be a Te nda but you will ne e d to consult the m anual for the othe r
brand on how to configure it to work with or as a re pe ate r. Most route r se tup page s use the sam e basic options
but it can vary be twe e n the brands. This se tup has be e n te ste d with the Te nda W 311R and the W 307R , but it
should work with any Te nda route r that has the W DS fe ature supporte d.

Bought 2 Te nda W 268R route rs from MicroC e nte r ye ste rday and spe nt >4 hours last night trying to m ak e the m

Look at the nam e of your firm ware . If it be gins with H1_v3.3.6e blabla, you should ge t sim ilar - for e x am ple
H1_v3.3.6h... Mind the H1 in the be ginning of the firm ware nam e , and aim for one with sim ilar form atting (not

W he n you login to your route r C lick on "Syste m Status" (in le ft m argin) scroll down and it will show ve rsion

Also I have both route rs using the sam e SSID, channe ls, se curity (I choose d W PA2 and AES) and password. I
also use d AES se curity on W DS with the sam e password as above .

I did se le ct lazy for e nte rtainm e nt route r (but should be able to se le ct bridge also) I also disable d DHC P

I found it handy to wire conne ct both route rs once I had disable d DHC P se rve r. Actually, only ne e de d to do this

You will want to m ak e sure the IP se ttings m atch what your ISP use s (DHC P, PPPoE, e tc). AT&T is
com m on for using PPPoE, so if you have AT&T, m ak e sure you are e nte ring the prope r cre de ntials

O k , I can confirm a fe w things and solve a fe w m yste rie s.

The re are at le ast two ve rsions of this route r (I own two). O n the outside , one has a re se t button ne x t to the
wps/wlan button which is acce ssible with a pape r clip. The othe r has no such re se t button (but it doe s still have
a wps/wlan button).

R oute r 1:
This is the route r with a re se t button. In the syste m status page , it re ports itse lf as anything be twe e n hardware
ve rsion 0.65 and 2.0. Nonse nsically, the hardware ve rsion it re ports de pe nds on the firm ware installe d. Mine
shippe d with the V3.3.6g firm ware which re ports as hardware ve rsion 2.0.

R oute r 2:
This is the route r with no re se t button. In the syste m status page , it re ports itse lf as hardware ve rsion 3.0. I
do not k now if that change s with firm ware ve rsion as I did not change the firm ware on this route r (it shippe d
with V5.07.25)

As shippe d, the se would not conne ct via W DS. I trie d downgrading the firm ware of route r 1 to V3.2.5e ,
howe ve r, I e x pe rie nce d the sam e difficultie s as m e ntione d above whe re the downgrade would not 'tak e '. Afte r
downgrading, the firm ware still re porte d V3.3.6g and W DS still didn't work . Howe ve r, afte r m uch
e x pe rim e ntation, I found that I could ge t W DS work ing afte r following this firm ware upgdrade /downgrade path
on route r 1:
V3.3.6g to V3.3.6h
V3.3.6g to V3.2.4.02s

At that point, I atte m pte d to upgrade to V3.2.5e , howe ve r, it give s an e rror saying that the firm ware is too big.
But, with V3.2.4.02s, it was able to conne ct to route r 2 via W DS. R oute r 1 now re ports itse lf as hardware ve rsion
0.65. Again, I did not change the firm ware of route r 2.

Hope this he lps!
