INTRODUCTION
Electricity is an essential part of our modern lives and it is said that no nation can
survive the present development challenges without electric power. We use electricity in our
daily lives especially at home, we use it to light our homes, to cook, and to power our
appliances and devices. Electricity can be defined as the flow of electrons through a conductor.
Materials that have a low resistance to electricity are called conductors. Example of these are
metals, on the other, hand materials that offer high resistance to the flow of electric current are
Even though electricity is important in our day to day lives, it is often referred to as a
“silent killer” because it cannot be tasted, seen, heard, or smelled, it is a known fact that
Floyd, et al. (2008) discussed that electric shocks occur when a person’s body
becomes part of the current path having both wires of an electric circuit, one wire of an
energized circuit, the ground and a metal part that accidentally becomes energized due to a
break in its insulation or another conductor that is carrying a current. A person’s body has low
resistance to electricity, a mere 50 milliampere can cause extreme body pain, severe muscle
contractions and ultimately death is possible. An electric current that exceeds 50 milliamperes
is lethal and can cause severe damage to the internal organs of a person.
Minna Metropolis of Nigeria, many residents or users of electricity are not well informed or
aware about electricity hazards and safety measures. On their findings, there are three electrical

hazards that residents are not aware of, first is the ungrounded circuit and equipment, second

percentage of people from Puerto Princesa City Urban areas are still not aware of electrical
safety practices.
Palawan has been one of leading provinces in the Philippines, in the past years there
especially on Puerto Princesa City. Electricity is a dire factor in these positive results that can
be seen in the city. As residents of Puerto Princesa becomes confident in using electricity on
their daily lives, electrical safety awareness should be of the same importance. We know that
electricity is important, but also dangerous if not used properly, due to the dangers electricity
possesses, efforts should be made to assess the level of safety awareness and level of safety
This thesis seeks to determine the level of awareness on electrical safety and level of
awareness on safety measures of the residents in selected barangays in Puerto Princesa. Based
on the general objectives, the following specific objectives are set; 1. To determine the level
awareness on electrical safety measures of each selected barangay, and 3. Determine if there
safety measures. A questionnaire survey will be used to provide useful information’s about
these objectives.
The researchers find this study as a significant part of safety planning and
management for the growing economy of Puerto Princesa. Raise public awareness and provide
3
sufficient knowledge on proper electrical safety practices which will help minimize potential
electrical safety and electrical safety measures of selected barangays in Puerto Princesa City.
This research does not include the supply shortage issues in Palawan Electric Cooperative
(PALECO) distributor and the total load and power consumption of residents.
Nothing can replace a loved one that has died or suffered the irreparable
consequences of an electrical accident. The ultimate responsibility lies with the users.

Electrical Hazards
Electrical hazards have always been recognized, serious injuries and deaths occur.
Organizations like the US Department of Labor and the National Safety Council compile
Hazard can be defined as any potential or actual threat to the wellbeing of people,
equipment, machinery or environment. Hazard can also be something that can be identified as
measured of potential source of danger such as naked electric wires, electric gadgets which are
not switched off, unprotected installation, overload socket outlet and many others (Cadick et
al., 2006).
According to Puerto Princesa City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), 7 cases of electrical
related fire occurred at the city, from January-July 2019. Fires occurred on 3 barangays used
in this research namely: Brgy. San Pedro, Brgy. San Miguel, and Brgy. Sicsican.
Basically, electrical hazards can be categorized into three types. The first and most
commonly recognized hazard is electrical shock. The second type of hazard is electrical burns
and the third is the effects of blasts which include pressure impact, flying particles from
Electric shock occurs when the human body becomes part of a path through which
electrons can flow. Burns can result when a person touches electrical wiring or equipment that
5
is improperly used or maintained, typically, such burn injuries occur on the hands, while arc-
blasts occur from high-amperage currents arcing through the air. This abnormal current flow
is initiated by contact between two energized points. This contact can be caused by persons
who have an accident while working on energized components, or by equipment failure due to
times and we ought to know that more electricity usage means more potential electrical
hazards.
Electricity can be dangerous and should be approached with caution; any forms of
energy, when not properly controlled or harnessed can result in danger to those who use it
(Kolak, 2007).
The use of electricity is something that is taken for granted. Using it safely is very
important. Understanding how electricity works and where it can be found, we can do our part
everyone on the use of electricity to meet human needs because electrical hazard poses a
significant risk of death and injuries to individuals. Attention to safety is the necessary first

Slovin’s Formula with a 0.05 margin of error. According to Ellen (2018), Slovin's formula
allows a researcher to sample the population with a desired degree of accuracy. It gives the
researcher idea of how large the sample size needs to be to ensure a reasonable accuracy of
results. This formula is also recommended by Glen (2012) because it is ideal if the behavior of

Research Instrument
The research utilized a survey questionnaire during the data gathering process. The
survey questionnaire has two parts: Part 1 includes questions involving electrical safety on
their household as shown in Appendix A and Part 2 includes questions about electrical safety
measures as shown in Appendix B. There are seven questions in each part and answer sheets
were provided. Table 3.2 shows the rubrics used in scoring the level of awareness with 1 as
the correct answer, 0.75 as slightly correct answer, 0.25 as an acceptable answer, and 0 as
wrong answer. The tabulated scores for the items in the survey form is shown on Table 3.3,
wherein SA 1 stands for Safety Awareness item number 1 where letter A is the correct answer,
SA 2 for Safety Awareness number 2 where letter B is the correct answer and so on while SM

Safety Measures Item Number 2 where letter C is the correct answer and so on.
Research Procedure
The researchers asked permission from the Office of City Planning to acquire for the
latest data of urban barangays population. The list of names of barangay captains and the
offices of each concerned barangays were acquired. Letters were sent to each barangay
informing them of the research undertaking, and to solicit assistance during its conduct. The
following steps were followed: (1) preparation of questionnaire by the researcher; (2) review
of the questionnaire by the thesis adviser and panel; (3) finalization of the questions; and (4)
administration of the questionnaires by the researcher to the respondents (5) analysis of the
gathered data.

CONCLUSION
This study is a descriptive research and uses a survey method for acquiring data. This
study aimed to determine the level of awareness of selected barangays in Puerto Princesa City
(Bancao Bancao, San Jose, Sta. Monica, San Miguel, Sicsican, and San Pedro) concerning
electrical safety and electrical safety measures. The study aimed to 1) determine the level of
electrical safety awareness of each barangays, 2) to determine the level of electrical safety
knowledge in electrical safety and electrical safety measures. Based on the collected data,
residents of selected barangays of Puerto Princesa City are all highly aware in terms of
electrical safety awareness. Residents from Brgy. San Jose ranked first on the findings which
implies that they have more knowledge on electrical safety awareness than other barangay.
Results also showed that there is a little difference in the knowledge of each barangay in terms
of electrical safety measures. The residents of these barangays are all very aware, barangay
