AISC DG31 Example 002

This document summarizes the results of testing a software program called ETABS on its ability to analyze the design of a non-composite cellular beam. The document provides the geometry, properties, and loading of an example beam and compares the output of ETABS to independent hand calculations. For all output parameters, ETABS results matched the independent calculations with 0% difference, demonstrating the software's capability to accurately analyze this type of composite beam design.

NON-COMPOSITE CELLULAR BEAM DESIGN

EXAMPLE DESCRIPTION
A 40 ft-long roof beam with simple supports, as shown below, will be evaluated
as a non-composite cellular section subject to uniform loading. Assume that
connections exist on either end to provide stability during construction and that the
connections are sufficiently rigid to prevent web post buckling at the first web post
on each end.

accordance with the User Note in AISC Section E4, whereas the DG31 example only
omits Cw. These two differences result in markedly different values of Fe, Fcr, ΦPn and
