Research (TP) I. Nationalism, Patriotism, and Volunteerism A. Nationalism

The document discusses the definitions and differences between nationalism, patriotism, and volunteerism. Nationalism refers to loyalty and devotion to one's nation and placing it above others. There are two types of nationalism: classical which sees the creation of a sovereign state as an obligation, and liberal. Patriotism is defined as love for one's country. Volunteerism is doing something by voluntary action or relying on volunteers in community service. Nationalism, patriotism, and volunteerism are similar in emphasizing love for one's country but differ in that nationalism implies placing one's nation above others which is not implicit in patriotism. The document also discusses encouraging volunteerism and community involvement.

I. Nationalism, Patriotism, and Volunteerism

a. Nationalism

The word nationalism was first used in 1798, wherein it is defined as loyalty and
devotion to a nation. It was further clarified that it is a sense of national awareness exalting
one nation above all other and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and
interests as contradicted to those of other nation or supranational groups. In addition, it was
moreover as nationalist movement or government. According to Stanford Encyclopedia of
Philosophy, the term nationalism is generally used to describe two (2) phenomena: the
demeanor that the individuals of a nation have when they care about their national identity
and the activities that the members of a certain country take when seeking to achieve (or
sustain) self-determination or some form of political sovereignty.

There are two varieties of nationalism: classical and liberal. Classical Nationalism is
the political program that sees the creation and maintenance of a fully sovereign state claimed
by a given ethno-national group (“people” or “nation”) as an essential obligation of
individuals of the group. Starting from the assumption that the suitable (or “natural”) unit of
culture is an ethno-nation, it claims the primary obligation of each member is to stand by
one’s recognizably ethno-national culture in all cultural matters. Classical Nationalists are
usually vigilant about the kind of culture

b. Patriotism
- The first known use of patriotism is in 1716, wherein it was referred to love for or
devotion to one’s country.
c. Volunteerism
- The word volunteerism was primarily used in 1844, wherein the meaning was
defined as the principle or system of doing something by or relying on voluntary
action or volunteers a theory that conceives will to be the dominant factor in
experience or in the world he act or practice doing volunteer work in community
service.
d. Differences and Similarities of Nationalism, Patriotism and Volunteerism
- Nationalism, patriotism and volunteerism are all interchangeably similar so far
wherein they are all words emphasizing the strong feeling of love for one’s country,
but they all have significant differences. As this research mention earlier, that

nationalism refers to loyalty and devotion to a nation that implies placing the nation
above others will not necessarily implicit in patriotism.

Volunteerism and community involvement have been demonstrated to offer benefits both to communities
and to volunteers themselves. However, not every method to encourage these behaviors is equally
effective in producing committed volunteers. Drawing on relevant theoretical and empirical literatures,
we identify features of efforts that are likely to produce intrinsically motivated other-oriented volunteers
and those that may produce extrinsically motivated self-oriented volunteers. In particular, we explore
ways to socialize young people to help and ways to build a sense of community focused on particular
issues. We also examine requirements for community service and other approaches that highlight self-
oriented benefits that volunteers may obtain. Finally, we return to a focus on the importance of intrinsic
motivation for promoting sustained involvement in volunteers, even as we acknowledge that volunteers

who come with extrinsic or self-oriented reasons can still offer much to communities and can be satisfied
when their activities match their motivations.
