Essay: How Values Brought Us To Success

Dr. Mariene Divine P. Ycoy gave a speech encouraging the audience to "dare to be different" and not conform to societal expectations of success. She recounted how she used to be shy and quiet in school, but realized she wanted to take risks and push boundaries. She urges others to challenge norms, take chances, and chart their own unique paths to achieving dreams rather than just following what is expected. Success comes from stepping out of one's shell and not being afraid to cross borders, according to Dr. Ycoy, who says everyone should dare to be different and make a difference by just being themselves.

Essay: How Values Brought Us to Success

“DARE TO BE DIFFERENT”

Ladies and gentlemen, I am Dr. Mariene Divine P. Ycoy, a graduate of

Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Cebu Normal University, a well-known cardiologist
from the United States of America and an owner of a resort café. Those titles are
just the fruits of my long years of hard work. Today’s speech is not simply about
me, but also about daring to be different and daring to make a difference. I have
chosen this topic since this is something that everyone can relate to and something I
have made a personal doctrine in which I struggle to live by.

To start, the realization hit me when I was your age. I consider myself as a
wallflower, especially in my junior high school years. Always late, quietly listening to
class discussions, but actually waiting for recess time. I envy those people who
actively took part in class sessions and are deemed great leaders in group activities.
I tell myself that I can do that, but too shy to do so. But after years of sitting
impatiently in my chair, I want to shake things up and go for the bold. I’m tired of
keeping my ideas to myself and want to see and do things differently. That’s got me
to where I am now. Always finding the edge and push past it. I do not contain
myself to one corner but explore beyond my limits.

We should all dare to be different, not being afraid to challenge the norm,
being willing to take the chance, being curious of what’s ahead, creating your own
route in achieving your dreams and not just catch or stick to what was thrown to
you, charting your own course and destiny, being one person that you were meant
to be.

I believe that everyone is born different. But though the years, we strived to
be like everyone else. We conform to someone else’s image of success. But this time
take your spotlight. You’ve got plenty of potential within you, bring it put into
fruition. Why? Because you are different.

Don’t let people grade you. Literal grades don’t define you. How you climbed
on top is how they judge you. You see, success is no mystery, you just need to step
out of your shells. There will always be hardship and failures. Life is hard, but you
still have the final say. Don’t be afraid to cross the borders.

I say, dare to be different, dare to make a difference, dare to be you.
