ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

NAME: REYMARK BATURI

COURSE: BSEE 3-C
QUESTION:
1. Define environment. Give examples of different type of environmental component.

Environment is the surroundings or condition in which a person, animal, or plant lives

operates. In other words environment refers to those surroundings that surrounds
living beings from all sides. The basic components of the atmosphere consists of
atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. Its chief components are soil,
water, air, organisms and solar energy.

2. What is the environmental engineering? What are the fields of environmental

engineering?
Environmental engineering is a job type that is a professional engineering discipline and
takes from broad scientific topics like chemistry, biology ecology, geology, hydraulics,
hydrology, microbiology, and mathematics to create solutions that will protect and also
improve the quality of the environment. Environmental engineering is the application
of scientific and engineering principles to improve and maintain the environment to
protect human health, protect nature’s beneficial ecosystems, and improve
environmental-related enhancement of the quality of human life.

The fields of environmental engineering are wastewater treatment, solid-waste

management, air pollution control, hazardous-waste management, emissions trading,
carbon sequestration, flue gas treatment and electrostatic precipitator.

3. What is environmental resource? Give examples of different type of resource.

An environmental resource is any material, service, or information from

the environment that is valuable to society. This can refer to anything that people find
useful in their environs, or surroundings. Food from plants and animals, wood for
cooking, heating, and building, metals, coal, and oil are all environmental resources.
Clean land, air, and water are environmental resources, as are the abilities of land, air,
and water to absorb society's waste products. Heat from the
sun, transportation and recreation in lakes, rivers, and oceans, a beautiful view, or the
discovery of a new species are all environmental resources.
Resources are characterized as renewable or nonrenewable; a renewable resource can
replenish itself at the rate it is used, while a nonrenewable resource has a limited
supply. Renewable resources include timber, wind, and solar while
nonrenewable resources include coal and natural gas.
4. What is environmental problem? Describe different type of environmental problems.

Environmental problems are caused by the dominance of a world-view in which human

beings are different from and superior to all other creatures, apparently giving them the
right to exploit Nature for their own sake.
Some of the major environmental issues or problems that are causing immense concern
are environmental pollution, air pollution, water pollution, garbage pollution,
noise pollution, deforestation, resource depletion, climate change etc.  Most of these
have resulted as a result of human overpopulation and also the indiscriminate of natural
resources without conserving them.

5. What do you understand by sustainability? Why is sustainability important for

environment?
Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also
need social and economic resources. Sustainability is not just environmentalism.
Embedded in most definitions of sustainability we also find concerns for social equity
and economic development.

Sustainability is important for a very simple, very straightforward reason: we cannot

maintain our quality of life as human beings, the diversity of life on Earth, or Earth’s
ecosystems unless we embrace it. There are indications from all quarters and from the
smallest to the largest scale that sustainability is something we must address. We will
run out of fossil fuels. Thousands if not millions of animal species will become extinct.
We will run out of lumber. We will damage the atmosphere beyond repair. If we don’t
change. And the root of that change lies in understanding and striving for sustainability
in our own homes, in our communities, in our ecosystems, and around the world

6. “Environment is getting worse day by day”. Are you agree with this statement?

Yes, we can see that our environment is getting worse day by day, and we are suffering
for other peoples and our mistakes. It’s getting harder and harder for our families to
stay healthy with all the bad things we are around every day. We are affected by our
environment, and more people are getting sicker and sicker. This could affect our
families and our future one day. But there can be a solution to helping our
environment. If we reach out to people who don't care about our environment, we
could change their point of view of things. We could tell them how bad things are in our
world and that could change what their prospective on things.
