FOREWORD
First of all, thanks to Allah SWT because of the help of Allah, writer finished writing
the paper entitled “The Use of Methaphore” right in the calculated time. The purpose in
writing this paper is to fulfill the assignment that given by Dra. Eva Betty Simanjuntak, M.Pd
as Supporting Lecturer in English Learning.
In arranging this paper, the writer trully get lots challenges and obstructions but with
help of many indiviuals, those obstructions could passed. writer also realized there are still
many mistakes in process of writing this paper.
Because of that, the writer says thank you to all individuals who helps in the process
of writing this paper. hopefully allah replies all helps and bless you all.the writer realized tha
this paper still imperfect in arrangment and the content. then the writer hope the criticism
from the readers can help the writer in perfecting the next paper.last but not the least

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Tenses are important in English language education. And also is a rule in speaking
English. If someone wants to master English well, then he must be able to master the
tenses well. Among the forms of tenses is the simple present tension which we will
discuss in our paper.
1.2 Problem Formulation
Based on the background of these problems then we formulate the contents of the
paper are as follows:
1.What is meant by tenses?
2. What is meant by simple present tense?
3. What is meant by simple past tense?
1.3 Purpose of Writing
In making this paper there is also an objective, namely that we know what simple present
tenses are.

DISCUSSION
2.1 Understanding of tenses
Tenses are a form of verb in grammar indicating when an action or event occurs and the
stage of completion. Tense is also a rule of speaking in English so that people who hear our
conversation can understand the meaning and purpose of our conversation. There are 16
forms of tenses in English, namely,
1. Simple present tens.
2. Present continuous tense
3. Present perfect tense
4. Present perfect continuous tense
5. Simple past tense
6. Past continou's tense
7. past perfect tense
8. Past perfect continuous tense
9. Simple future tense
10. Future continuous tense
11. future perfect tense
12. Future perfect continuous tense
13. Future past tense
14. Future past continuous tense
15. Future past perfect tense
16. Future past perfect continuous tense
Based on the use of the verb, tense sentences are divided into two forms, namely,
a.Nominal Form:
A sentence in the nominal form means a sentence with a noun as the subject and without
using the verb as the predicate. A sentence like this requires to be as the predicate.
b.Verbal Form:
The sentence in the verbal form uses the verb (Verb) as the predicate. Here we will only
discuss the simple presenttense.
2.2 Definition of Simple Present Tense
Simple Present Tense is a form of time that is used to express an action or activity that is
taking place at the present time in the form of a simple activity or work that is repeated, daily
habits, events or actions that have nothing to do with time and to express general truths.
B. Function of Simple Present Tense
In a sentence, this simple present tense functions to be used in various kinds of statements,
including,
1. State Daily Activities (Daily Activity)
This tense function shows repetitive activities or activities. Activities every day from
waking up to going to sleep again. Example: I go to school everyday (Saya pergi ke sekolah
setiap hari).
2. State Events which are common and cannot be denied
This tense function also states general truth or general truth. Example:
The sun rises from the east (Matahari terbit dari timur).
The leaves are green (Daunnya berwarna hijau).
3. State requests or orders to the other person
Example: Please sit down, Ana! (Silakan duduk Ana)
4. State Events That Can Be Certainly Happened or Scheduled
This tense function provides a statement regarding an event that occurs or will be carried
out in the future. Example:
I'll be visiting Grandpa's house every weekend (Saya akan mengunjungi rumah Kakek
setiap akhir pekan).
My father will go home once a month (Ayah saya akan pulang sebulan sekali).
5. Shows the Ability, Character and Nature of a Person
This tense function shows the nature and abilities that a person has. Example: Ana and Ani
speak English fluently. (Ana and Ani berbahasa Inggris dengan lancar).
6. Citing News or Information
This tense function shows to quote a news, newspaper, website and also other news
sources. The verbs that we often use are advice or advise, say (say), remind (warn). Example:
The announcement warns us not to gather and always keep our distance (Pengumuman
tersebut memperingatkan kami untuk tidak berkumpul dan selalu menjaga jarak).
C. Types of Simple Present Tense
1. Nominal Simple Present
(+) S + to be (am/is/are) + adjective/adverb
(-) Subject + to be (am/is/are) + not + adverb
(?) To be (am/is/are) + S + adjective/adverb?
Example of Simple Present Nominal Sentences:
Positive sentence: He is very patience
Negative sentence: He is not/isn’t very patience
Interrogative sentence: Is he patience?
2. Verbal Simple Present
Positive sentence: S + verb 1 (+ s/es) + O
Negative sentence: S + do/doesn’t + V 1 + O
Interrogative sentence: Does/Do+ S + V 1 + O?
Example of Simple Present Verbal Sentences:
Positive sentence: She goes to school
Negative sentence: She doesn’t go to school
Interrogative sentence: Does she go to school?
D. Special Features of Simple Present Tense
This tense or verb has various special characteristics among Others,
1. The predicate of tense is always a bare infinitive
Specifically the subject consists of a single third person. Like: she, he, it, paint, Steven,
Susi. The verb is bound to end with the letter -s / es / ies. Example: Jerry often plays the
guitar (Jerry sering memainkan gitar).
2. Question Sentence
In an interrogative sentence, it will be formed by adding the word do / does to the verbal
sentence. As for to be (am, is, are) we use it to make non-verbal sentences in front of the
subject.
3. Negative Sentences
As for the negative sentence, you will get the word do not or don't or does not (doesn't) in
the verbal sentence. Likewise for to be am, is, are in a non-verbal sentence behind the subject.
E. Time Signal or Simple Present Tense Time Sign
The time sign that we often use is in the simple present tense, which is an adverb of time.
In addition, it is also the adverb of frequency or description of the loop.

in the morning

Twice a day
Usually this adverb of time is often placed or used at the beginning or end of a sentence.

Usually the adverb of frequency is often placed before the verb or after to be.
2.3 PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
A. Definition of Present Continuous Tense
Reporting from Grammarly, the present continuous tense is a form of tense used to state
that an action is taking place for a certain time at the present time. This form shows that the
action occurs before (begins before), during (is in progress at the present), and continues after
(continues after) time or other actions. Examples are as follows:
Aunt Christine is warming up the car while Scott looks for his new leather coat.
They are eating at Scott’s favorite restaurant today.
They are sitting at Scott’s favorite booth, the one with the sparkling red plastic seats.
The waiter is standing behind the counter right now with a notepad in his hand and
pencil behind his ear.
“Are you waiting to open your presents after you eat your pancakes?” said Aunt
Christine, taking a sip from her root beer.
B. Formula of Present Continuous Tense
The following is the formula for using the Present Continuous Tense among others,
Positive sentence: Subjek + be (am/is/are) + verb (-ing) + …
Negative sentence: Subjek +be (am/is/are) + not + verb (-ing) + …
Interrogative sentence: Be (am/is/are) + subjek + verb (-ing) + …?
C. Use of Present Continuous Tense
There are several uses for the present continuous tense, among others,
1. To show an action that is ongoing and happening now
Example:
It is raining and I am waiting for my mother to pick me up.
I am writing this letter to express my feelings to you.
She is dancing in the rain.
2. Untuk membicarakan aksi yang terjadi sekitar waktu pembicaraan
Example:
Arnold is taking five classes this semester.
At this moment, my husband keeps all his money in his closet.
3. To talk about plans that are certain to happen in the near future
Example:
She is spending her holiday in Bangkok next week.
He is renting a whole theatre for his anniversary tonight.
My boss is promoting Stacey to be the new manager next month.
D. Form of Present Continuous TensePresent Continuous Tense
There are 2 parts which are included in the form of the present continuous tense such
as,
1. Form "to be"
1) Single Sentence :
I am (orang pertama)
You are (orang kedua)
He / she / it is (orang ketiga)
2) Plural Sentences :
We are (orang pertama)
You are (orang kedua)
They are (orang ketiga)
2. The form of the verb "-ing" (V + ing)
Example :
Go + ing = going.
Read + ing = reading.
Cook + ing = cooking.
E. Adverb of Time in The Present Continuous Tense
Generally the adverb of time used in the present continuous tense sentence is:
Right now
At the moment
Today
At present
This month
This year
This week
This semester

3.1 Conclusion
Simple Present Tense is a form of time used to express actions. Simple Present Tense is
used to state a habit that is carried out at a certain time (habits), states general truth, states a
habit that is repeated / a situation that does not change (repeated actions), states an instruction
/ direction (instructions) or directions), state the unchanging situation (fixed arrangements),
state with future construction.
Simple Present Tense is divided into:
1. Simple Present Tense Verb (verbal sentence), which is a sentence in which there is a
verb (main verb), which indicates an activity. It can be in the form of positive, negative and
interrogative sentences.
2. Simple Present Tense Non Verb (nominal sentence), which is a sentence in which there
is no verb but can be in the form of a noun, adjective, and adverb. It can be in the form of
positive, negative and question sentences.
3. Questions in the Simple Present Tense with Do and Does (interrogative sentence),
which is an interrogative sentence used in verbal and nominal interrogative sentences using
do and does.
1.4 Advice
The discussion about the Simple Present Tense is not limited to this paper, because we
can dig further about the Simple Present Tense. The goal is that we as the successor of the
Indonesian nation can.
