What Is A Computer? Assignment 1 Solution
Assignment # 1-(solution)
Briefly answer the following questions in your own words:
1. What is a computer?
A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations and operations based
on instructions provided by a software or hardware program. It is designed to execute
applications and provides a variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware and software
components
2. Why are mainframe systems usually limited in the number of tasks they
perform?
The term mainframe computer is used to distinguish very large computers used by institutions to
serve multiple users from personal computers used by individuals. Mainframe computers are
capable of handling and processing very large amounts of data very quickly.
3. What is the most popular use for home computers?
However, a home computer often had better graphics and sound than contemporary business
computers. Their most common uses were playing video games, but they were also regularly
used for word processing, doing homework, and programming.
4. What is the midrange computer? Why is it called so?
Midrange is a computer class that stands in the middle of mainframes and microcomputers (or
desktops/PCs). During the 1960s, this term was frequently used when midrange computers were
also known as minicomputers.
5. How is computer technology used in education?
Both teachers and students use computers to complete specific tasks. For teachers, they use
computers to create graphic illustrations which can help students learn easily, yet students use
computers in typing of notes and reading of electronic books which can be downloaded from the
internet.
6. List the four parts of a complete computer system.
A complete computer system includes hardware, software, data and users.
7. Identify four categories of computer hardware.
Hardware includes processing, memory, input/output and storage.
8. Name and differentiate the two main categories of computer software.
There are two main types of software: systems software and application software.
Systems software includes the programs that are dedicated to managing the computer itself,
such as the operating system, file management utilities, and disk operating system (or DOS).
Application software, or simply applications, are often called productivity programs or end-user
programs because they enable the user to complete tasks, such as creating documents,
spreadsheets, databases and publications, doing online research, sending email, designing
graphics, running businesses, and even playing games.
9. What is a fundamental difference between data and programs?
Program is an instruction that goes to your CPU and your CPU decides which pins on the CPU
are turned on or off based on the instructions. Data is bits and bytes just like a program but does
not go into your CPU as instructions, rather it used by program to carry out certain process.
10. What is hardware and software? Give their examples.
Computer hardware is any physical device used in or with your machine, whereas software is a
collection of code installed onto your computer's hard drive.
For example, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc., are hardware’s. on the other hand, internet
browser, operating system, Microsoft office are the examples of software’s.
