Department of Mechanical Engineering: Mech412: Machine Design II Second Semester, 2020-2021

The document outlines a term project assignment to design a two-stage epicyclic gearbox that produces a 9:1 speed reduction. Key details of the design project include: 1. The conceptual design shows input to the sun gear in both stages and output through the arm, with three planets in each stage. The gearbox must transfer 18kw of power at 1440 rpm. 2. The design must consider steel materials, gear module sizes, minimum tooth counts, and material hardness values provided in a table. 3. The design tasks involve deciding gear configurations, calculating forces and stresses, dimensioning the connecting arm, sizing input/output shafts, selecting bearings, modeling in CAD software

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Mech412: Machine Design II

Second Semester, 2020-2021.
March 2021.

Term Project – Two stage Gearbox

CLO6: Carry out individually or within a team a full system (with multiple machine elements),

In this project you are required to design a two-stage epicyclic gearbox. The conceptual design of the
gearbox is shown in Figure 1. It should produce a speed reduction of 9:1. The Input should be to the
Sun gear and the output is through the arm in both stages. At each stage there should be three
planets. The design part should consider steel as the material and the gearbox should be able to
transfer 18 kw of power at 1440 input rpm.
However the build part of the project can use any material.3D printing is not a favoured option for
manufacturing. Explore laser cutting or water jet cutting.

Minimum
Details Module Maaterial from Table 11.2 Remarks
teeth
A&B 3 mm 18 AISI1030 with a BHN 401
C&D 3 mm 18 AISI 1030 with a BHN 302
E&F 3.5 mm 16 AISI 1030 with a BHN 255
G&H 3.5 mm 16 AISI 1040 with a BHN 262
I&J 4.0 mm 15 AISI 1040 with a BHN 241
K 4.0 mm 15 AISI 1040 with a BHN 241

You should do the following:

1. Decide the configuration of the gearbox by deciding the number of teeth, in the Sun, Planet
and Ring gears and their diameters.
2. Calculate the forces on the Sun gear in both stages
3. Calculate the bending and contact stresses in the Sun wheels and decide suitable face
widths.
4. Consider the conceptual design of the arm shown in Figure 2. The length of the arm is
according to the distance between centers. Decide the thickness of the arm.

5. Decide the torques in the arm and estimate the bending stress at the root shown in Figure.
6. Design the shafts a, b and C considering the torque requirements.
7. Assuming the expected life of shafts are 10,000 hours choose the bearings A, B, C and D.
8. Model the gear wheel 2 in CATIA or NX with involute profile.
9. Design the walls 1 to 4 in two halves to facilitate aligning bearings and installing them.
10. Model the gearbox and walls in CATIA or NX and produce the production drawings.
