LESSON 1: Arithmetic Sequence: in General

The document discusses arithmetic sequences, which are sequences where the difference between consecutive terms is constant. It provides the general formula for an arithmetic sequence as {a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ...} where a is the first term and d is the common difference. Formulas are given for writing the nth term and summing the terms of an arithmetic sequence. Several example activities are provided for finding terms and sums of arithmetic sequences.

LESSON 1: Arithmetic Sequence

In an Arithmetic Sequence the difference between one term and the next is a constant.
In other words, we just add the same value each time ... infinitely

In General we could write an arithmetic sequence like this:

{a , a+d , a+2 d , a+ 3 d , ... }
where:
 a is the first term, and
 d is the difference between the terms (called the "common difference")

Rule
We can write an Arithmetic Sequence as a rule:
xn=a+d ( n−1)
(We use n-1because d is not used ∈the 1 st term).
Activity 1:

Find the first 5 terms of the sequence given nth term.

1. a n=n+ 4
2. a n=2 n−1
3. a n=12−3 n
n
4. a n=3
n
5. a n=(−2)
Activity 2:

Find the missing terms in each arithmetic sequence.

1. 3, 12, 21, ___, ___, ___
2. 8, 3, -2, ___, ___
3. 5, 12, ___, 26, ___
4. 2, ___, 20, 29, ___
5. ___, 4, 10, 16, ___
6. 17, 14, ___, ___, 5
7. 4, ___, ____, 19, 24, …
8. ___, ___, ___, 8, 12, 16
9. -1, ___, ___, ___, 31, 39
10. 13, ___, ___, ___, -11, -17

Summing an arithmetic series

To sum up the terms of this arithmetic sequence:
a+(a+ d)+(a+2 d )+(a+3 d)+.. .
use this formula:
Here is how to use it:

Activity 3:

Find the sum of each of the following.

1. Integers from 1 to 50
2. Odd integers from 1 to 100
3. Even integers between 1 and 101
4. First 25 terms of the arithmetic sequence 4, 9, 14, 19 24, …
5. Multiples of 3 from 15 to 45
6. Numbers between 1 and 81 which are divisible by 4
7. First 20 terms of the arithmetic sequence -16, -20, -24, …
8. First 10 terms of the arithmetic sequence 10.2, 12.7, 15.2, 17.7, …
9. 1+5+9+ … +49+53
1 3 5 17 19
10. + + +…+ +
