PennDOT provides a gender neutral thesaurus to replace gendered terms in documents and communications. Some terms like "craftsmen" can be replaced with "craftperson". Terms like "firemen" and "flagmen" can be replaced with "firefighters" and "flaggers". Gendered pronouns like "his or her" can be replaced with "their" or refer to the person by name or role. A few terms are still under review due to existing job classifications. The thesaurus aims to make PennDOT communications more inclusive.
