CHEM-E6145 Unit Operations in Mineral Processing and Recycling (5 CR)

This document provides information on tutorials for a university course on mineral processing and recycling. It includes a schedule of tutorial topics covering comminution, classification, flotation, filtration and simulation software. The simulation software can model particle-based, distribution-based, and reaction-based processes and is used to design and optimize mineral processing flows. The tutorials will involve hands-on practice creating and running simulations of mineral processing circuits.

HSC-8 SIM Tutorial

SIM – FLOWSHEET SIMULATION MODULE

• Modeling and simulation are the most important tools

when developing new processes and improving existing
ones.
• The process calculations are the basis for the design,
dimensioning, and engineering of reactors, plants, and
systems.

Sim – HSC Simulation tool

• A versatile tool for simulating chemical processes.

• Separate unit models for hydro, pyro and particle based

processes, which can be used in the same flowsheet.

• The calculation in based on the mass- and energy

balance and the flowsheet is calculated to the steady-
state.

HSC-8 SIM Tutorial

Particle model
• Unit operation calculations are based on particle
distributions.
• This mode is often used in minerals processing and physical
recycling.
• Typical unit operations are crushing, grinding, flotation,
gravity separation, and screening.
Distribution model
• Distribution unit operation models are based on element
distributions.
• This mode is typically used in pyrometallurgical processes
Reaction model
• Reaction mode unit operation calculations are based on
chemical reactions, i.e. the process models are described by
a relevant selection of chemical-reaction equations.
• This mode is typically used in hydrometallurgical processes. 8

Creating a Simulation Model - Steps
1. Draw Units and Streams
2. Check the stream connections
3. Save Process
4. Go through the Stream Setup
5. Select the Unit models
6. Simulate
7. Set Controls
- edit and tune model parameters in each unit
8. Simulate
9. Save Process
10. Report

11

4. Stream Setup

• Feed stream " right mouse button

• For existing feed streams, just double click the stream
• Define:
- Flow rates
- Minerals (from database)
- Size classes and distribution
- Element to mineral conversion

5. Select the unit models

• Double click the unit

13

7. Set Controls
• Solves iteratively the
control variable (X) value
to reach the target (Y)
set point.

Use for example in:

- Slurry density control by
adding water to keep the
solids-% in the given
set point.
