Grade 3 4 Notan Art
Grade 3 4 Notan Art
Overview of lesson.
For this lesson students will be doing notan art. Notan art is a Japanese word that means “light dark harmony.” Artists use
notan studies to look at light and dark within a painting. I will also explain to the students negative and positive space.
First, I will show my example of the art for the class. Then I will explain the steps. Students will be given a black square of
paper. They will use their pencil to draw designs on the square. I will do my own in front of the class so they understand
how to do it. Once they have all of their lines drawn they will cut out the shapes. They will have to follow the lines that
they drew the best that they can. Then they will be given a white sheet of paper. They will place all of the black pieces of
paper that they cut onto this sheet. Before they glue anything, they will place the pieces of paper correctly. (I will show
them how). Once they have their paper the correct way – I will check. They will be allowed to glue down the paper. I will
walk around while students complete these steps to help them with their art and to observe.

doing guided drawing with them so they know
Transition: Now students will be given time to complete the task. what to do.
Students will now have time to complete all of the steps and I will
walk around to observe and help them.
Consolidating ( 5 ) mins
Today we did notan art which helps make a balanced artwork. Also talk about negative and positive space.
Clean up ( 5 ) mins
Students will give their artwork to me and put all of their borrowed supplies in the art cart.
