Reseach For Interioor

The document summarizes research on two existing book cafe examples in China called Longshang Books Cafe and Rong Bao Zhai Coffee Bookstore. It provides plans, sections, and descriptions of the interior designs of both cafes which combine books, reading areas, and cafe spaces. The document then discusses a proposed book cafe project for Cyprus International University that would provide spaces for digital resources, reading, cafe amenities, and consider site conditions and user needs like comfort, lighting, noise control and privacy.

RESEARCH STUDIES

ARCT 309
YUSUF STEPHEN JATAU –21707986
MSHARI KHALIL-21809073
INTRODUCTION

• The goal of the project is to design café/book store that solves

the needs of the users, through interior design and spatial
organization.
EXAMPLES

• NAME: Longshang Books Cafe

• LOCATION: XUHUI, CHINA
• M2: 188m2
• FUNCTION: Book store
PLAN
INTERIOR

• THE SPACE COMBINES BOOKSTORE,

COFFEE AND SALON, THESE
FUNCTIONS ARE DIFFERENTIATED
BUT INTERACTS WITH THE OTHER
TWO. THEREFORE, A KIND OF
‘ARCH WALL’ IS APPLIED. THE
ELEMENT HAS BEEN ADOPTED IN
SPACIOUS SALON AREA AND
BOOKSHELF STRUCTURES.
ESPECIALLY IN THE LATTER
EXPERIENCE, SITTING IN THE ‘ARCH
WALL’ READING, OR BROWSING
ALONG THE BOOKSHELF BACKSIDE
BECOMES AN INTERESTING
EXAMINATION OF THESE DELICATE
CORRELATION WITH PEOPLE AND
ENVIRONMENT.
INTERIOR
• There are 3 ‘windows’. ‘Window 1’ is
the entry door, from where the indoor
circulation begins. ‘Window 2’ stands
on the same exterior facade where
the circulation ends. It also leads
lower light in. ‘Window 3’ connects
coffee bar and the book area, through
which an Osmanthus tree and campus
of ECUST could be seen. All
bookshelves indoor are made of steel
panel. Meanwhile, the curtain wall of
exterior facade applies the same steel
panel. Sharing the remarkable
consistency, the facade acts as the
corresponding point of indoor and
outdoor. In consideration of using the
most basic, familiar material, besides
the stainless steel panel, wood is
commonly used as well. In
combination of familiar material and
unfamiliar structure, the feeling of
space scale gets vague.

INTERIOR

• IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE HEAVY AND RIGID IMAGES OF

TRADITIONAL BOOKSTORES, NEW DESIGNS USE TRANSPARENT
AND LIGHTSOME IRON BOOK SHELVES TO INTEGRATE
FUNCTIONS, TRANSPORTATION, EQUIPMENT AND
ILLUMINATION AND PUT GREEN PLANTS IN THE STORES TO
MAKE THEIR INTERNAL SPACE MORE CONTINUOUS AND OPEN
AS WELL AS FULL OF VITALITY. BASED ON THE ORIGINAL POLE
NET OF THE BUILDING, THE INSIDE TURNS OUT TO BE A RING-
LIKE SPACE STRUCTURE: THE CENTRAL DISTRICT IS ISLAND-
STYLE SPACE SURROUNDED BY IRON BOOKSHELF WALLS. THE
CENTRAL ISLAND ON THE FIRST FLOOR IS USED AS CASHIER
DESK AND COFFEE OPERATING TABLE; THE SECOND FLOOR IS
THE MEETING ROOM-A SHINY BOX ENCLOSED BY SWITCHABLE
GLASS. THE SWITCHABLE GLASS CAN MODIFY INTERNAL AND
EXTERNAL TRANSPARENT STATE TO MAKE THE MEETING ROOM
MORE FLEXIBLE FOR USE. WITH SOFT MEMBRANE CEILING, THE
CENTER ISLAND HAS A HOMOGENEOUS INTEGRAL
ILLUMINATION, WHICH IS JUST LIKE INDOOR LANTERNS, AND
THE COFFEE BOOTHS ARE INTERSPERSED AROUND THE
CENTER ISLAND.
INTERIOR
THE IRON BOOKSHELVES USE 1CM*1CM SOLID IRON BARS AS
VERTICAL SUPPORTS, AND 1CM*30CM IRON PLATES AS LAYER
BOARDS. THEY ARE COMPLETED BY USE OF LASER INCISION TO
CUT INCISIONS OF STAND COLUMNS IN EACH LAYER, WHICH ARE
THEN WELDED FROM BOTTOM TO TOP. PLANTS BETWEEN THE
IRON BOOKSHELVES CAN MAKE READERS SENSE THE NATURE,
MEANWHILE THEY CAN EFFECTIVELY ADJUST INDOOR
MICROCLIMATE. LED LIGHT STRIPS ARE INSTALLED AT THE
BOTTOM OF THE PLANT BOXES, WHICH CAN PROVIDE READERS
WITH INDIRECT ILLUMINATION. SCIOPHILOUS FERNS ARE THE
PRIMARY CHOICE OF INDOOR PLANTS AND THE HIGH PLANT
BOXES ARE FURNISHED WITH CLIMBING SHRUBS. HERBS SUCH AS
MINT AND PELARGONIUM ODORATISSIMUM ARE PLACED IN FRONT
OF THE WINDOWS AND ON THE COFFEE TABLES. THE COFFEE
BOOKSTORE WILL BECOME A NEW LEISURE PLACE FOR PEOPLE
AFTER SHOPPING IN THE AZURE STONE WORKSHOP. SITTING
PEACEFULLY THEREIN, PEOPLE ARE COEXISTING WITH THE
COFFEE, BOOKS AND PLANTS. THE INDOOR SPACE HAS BEEN
WEAKENED INTO AN ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUND WHERE
PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCE AND FEELINGS ARE MOTIVATED.

SITE AND BUILDING ANALYSIS

• THE SITE IS LOCATED IN CYPRUS

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY.
• THE WEATHER CHANGES
ACCORDING THE TIME OF
THE YEAR, HEAT WARM AND
COLD CAN BE EXPERIENCED
• THERE IS VEGITATION AROUND
THE SITE AND BUILDING LOCATION
• DURING RUSH HOURS HEAVY FOOT
TRAFFICK CAN BE OBSERVERD
WHICH COULD LEAD TO NOISE
AROUND THE MAIN ENTRACE
SCENARIO

• The project is to be designed to function as a

café and book store, where users could visit to
either use the digital resources, or simply read
hard copy books. Spaces will designed to
manage noise from outside and allow the users
to read without distractions. A café stand will
also be part of the functions, the users will be
able to take light beverages while passing time
at the bookcafe. Staff services will include the
store mangers, cleaning staff, baristars and
librarian.
USER NEEDS
