1. Range of Application
The AVL Dynarnic Fuel Meter 7335 has been developed with a view to the requirements of
modern engine producers. With the installation of the control and evaluation unit in the fuel
consumption sensor the present-day bend towards more intelligent sensors has been taken
into account. The standard interface to the higherlevel test bed computer or user (terminal,
PC), respectively, is a RS232 interface.

o Individual and multiple measurement with preselected measurement time .
Fuel meter 7335 is suitable for all commercially available petrol and diesel fuels (also with
the addition of an optional amount of alcohoi) as well ai for pure alcohol. The standard
connection elements can be used up to an alcohol content of 15 7o. Beyond this limit, stainless
connection parts are required (see Chapter 3. Options).

Function:
O Acquisition of the fuel mass in a measuring vessel that is suspended on a bending spring'
O A micrrcprocessor evaluates the volAge and carries out a fully automatic control of measurement
and calibration procedures.
The gravimetric measuring principle allows for a directmeasurcment of the fuel mass
consumed. The acquisition of fuel temperature and density which, at volumetric
measurernent procedures, is affected by accuracy-reducing tolerances'is no longer
necessary.
O Vessel solution
Just as the fuel tank, also the measuring vessel is equipped with an engine return line
connection and a venting line and thus provides for a continuous air and vapour bubble
separation in the measuring circuit (engine feed and return line). An additional
separation of bubbles, which would have a negative effect on accuracy and dynamics,
is not required. Bubbles are of course separated from the fuel supply in the measuring
vessel before they would get into the measuring circuit.
With fuel meter 7335.18, consumptions of 0...150 kgA, in case of special applications up
to 'CIO kg4, can be measured. (In this case, please contact your local AVl-representative.)
Without opening the fuel lines, the measuring accuracy of the fuel meter can be
supervised and a calibration can be carried out. With a Bypass valve (see
Chapter 3. Options) this is possible while the engine is running.

3.2 Options
a Interface 7330L03 (Order No. : TM0733SANA.01)
With this option an analog/digial interface for simple coupling with measuring data
acquisition systems is available.
The following options are suitable for commercially available petrol and diesel fuels with a
max. methanol/ethanol content of 15%.
ln case of a defect (e.g. filling valve leaky due to contamination) the fuel may leak out
through the venting line. The overflow detector is to be installed in the venting line. The
overflow detector consists of a vessel with a float switch ("empty" stands for a closed,
potential-free contact;250 V, 10 VA) and serves for driving external waming and fuel I
shutoff devices.
The overflow detector is only suitable for media of a density > 0.7 8/crrr3.

screwed ends appropriate for the fuel meter; 2 hoses (engine feed and retum lines) are
equipped with ball valves.

O Bypass
_l In the Bypass Mode the fuel meter is bypassed, feed and return lines are connected
directly with the fuel supply.
'l
O Special cable lengths
- Heat exchanger
-I - Cooling modules
Fuels with a high vapour pressure tend to form vapour bubbles even at room
temperature. With the pressurizing module option, pressure in the measuring vessel of
the fuel meter is increased, which largely prevents the formation of vapour bubbles.
Note that, simultaneously, pressure will be increased in the return line.
For certain test tasks it may be required that the fuel is available in the mixture
preparation system with preselected pressure. With the pressure regulator module
option, an overpr€ssure between 0.01 and 3 bar can be selected
0.2...1bar TMO73OPRA.02
Especially in the case of single-cylinder engines with unit-injector, pressure shocks mav
affect the consumption rneasurernent. If very high pr,'essure shocks are to be expected,
the fuel damper option should be installed in the retum line.

Fig.4-1
Due to the gravimetric measuring principle, the fuel meter itself is insensitive to changes in
1 fuel temperature and gaseous portions (bubbles) in the fuel.
J It determines the fuel weight in the measuring vessel with high accuracy and calculates the
consumption from the measuring vessel on the basis of the change in weight. However, in
order todeterrnine the consumption by the engine in an accurate way, it must be ensured
_i
Operating Manual 4-1
lntegration of the Fuel Meter into the Test Bed AVL 733S FuelMeter
Consequently,
the measuring cirtuit must be completely deaerated and the fuel in the measuring
circuit free from bubbles (the gas volume is highly dependent on pressure and
thermal influences)
the geometric volume of the measuring circuit must be constant (avoid thermal or
pressure-dependent expansions)
O With the fuel meter a measurementwith preselected time is carried out (measuring time
20 s).
a Average temperature increase of fuel in the measuring circuit during the measuring
time:
At = 0.2o C
I
Due to the temperature increase the weight of the fuel in the measuring circuit is reduced
by AG.
AG=V.p.o.At=0.34t
-+ During the measuring time, the engine consurnes 20 g, the fuel meter determines
the sum consumption (engtne - weight change in the measuring cirnrit)
20g-0.349=19'668.
This is 1.7 %less than the consumption by the engine
Conclusion:
I
Even minimal changes in temperature in the measuring circuit will cause considerable
differences between consumption from the measuring vessel (measuring result of a fuel
consumption measuring device) and the actual consumption by the engine:

This protocol is based on the general guidelines, which are defined in AK-paper
"V 24 / R9z3z-interface - basic information".

Description of Functions
I
J This option provides for an analog/digrtal interface for simple coupling with measuring
data acquisition systems.
I
Digital inputs will be sampled with a nominal l0 Hz. As the load
I
of the controller may vary (e.g. due to the serial RS232 interface),
-J lower acquisition rates may also occur.
The maximum response time or the minimum length of pulse,
respectively, is 250 ms.
DAC-output 0...10V
Output frequency 10Hz
For scaling see AK-protocol: EOPA or AOPA
The value to be shown on the DAC will be deermined by digital inpub M and RESULT.
The validity of the DAC-signal will be shown by digital output VAL1D.

H
Option lnterface 7330L03 - Description of Functions AVL 7335 Fuel Meter
Both inputs remain always effective. They definewhichvalue will be outputat the DAC.
Nofe
The insfantaneous valueVc/nj is calculated from the change of the filling level inside
the measuring vessel during the parameterized differentiating time (i.e. it corresponds
to the effective filling rate during filling). If the instantaneous value does not correspond
to the actual consumption, digital output VALID is set to off. DIL switch 55 selects if the
instantaneous value is output at analog out only if it corresponds to the consumption
(S5 = on) or if it is output at any time (S5 = off).
Le. 55 = on: the value at analog out corresponds to the actual consumption [tg,l'] UALID
= on) or to the lastmeasured consumption (VALID = off).
The intermediafe /esurf is the average consumption [k&i] or the quantity consumed [g]
since Start (,'GATE" off -r signal-edge on).
The /afesf measurement result is the average consumption [te,fi] or the quanitv
consumed [g] of the latest measurement, even if it was aborted. The corresponding
measuring time is the latest GATE-on-time.

AIYIL 733s FuerMeter Maintenance
-, 14. Maintenance
14.1 General
The fuel meter 7335 is basically maintenance-free. However, it is recommended to check the
accuracy of the fuel meter in regular intervals - see Chapter 7.4.9.
I The maintenance instmctions indicated below primarily serve to avoid, to a large extent,
unexpected failures of the measuring device.
-
14.2 Solenoid Valve
-
The plunger-seal consists of high-quality sealing material KALREZ), which ensues
resistance for all fuels.
I
However, leakages nury occur when dirt particles (fine chips, etc.) deform the sealing
material at the seat; in addition, a large number of switching cycles will cause a local
"hardening" of the seal and, consequently, leakages.
-
Indicators of a defective plunger:
The damping oil is a fully synthetic oil whose viscosity ensures a stable damping
characteristic.
Indicators for old damping oil: insufficient reproducibility of results at measurements or the
accuracy check
Order-No.: 801042
I
t
Maintenance AVL 733S FuelMeter
It is recommended to re-preserve the tr,vo springs, in the insalled position, every 2 years.
Oils with
a vaseline-base are rather appropriate preservatives, as e.g. SHELL ENSIS FLUID
G which are to be applied by means of a brush.
-!
15. Reconditioning
'r
't
15.1 Exchanging the Fuse
The fuse will be destroyed by a faulty polarization of the supply voltage or by an overvoltage
(> ca. 28 V).
1 O The fuse is located on the firrnt side of the controller card and may be exchanged after
opening the hinged cover of the fuel meter.
I
't
Use only original fuses

Adjustment Procedure
J
O Fill up the measuring vessel or drain fuel from the vessel until the distances to the upper
and the lower stop are identical - see Fig. 15-1, Detail A.
=-< i
o Lower the calibration weight by pressing the key switch downward - keep pressing the
key switch - Dll-switch 8 must be set to ON!
I a After loosening the terminal screws, shift lifting device until the distances to the
calibration weight and to the top face of vessel are identical - see Fig. 15-1, Detail B.
-l Tighten terminal screws, release key switch and set Dll,-switch to initial position.
__J
Be sure that the cable to the counter-electrode is freely
-l movable. Above all, it must not touch the cable to the
