AVlLTffis FuerMeter Range of Application

1. Range of Application
The AVL Dynarnic Fuel Meter 7335 has been developed with a view to the requirements of
modern engine producers. With the installation of the control and evaluation unit in the fuel
consumption sensor the present-day bend towards more intelligent sensors has been taken
into account. The standard interface to the higherlevel test bed computer or user (terminal,
PC), respectively, is a RS232 interface.

With option interface 7330In3, an analog output as well as a potential-free digital-I/O

(4 inputs / 4 outputs) for control of the fuel meter are also available.

Fig.1-1

Operating Manual 1-1

Range of Application AVL 733S FuelMeter

The fuel meter 7335 is available in two weight versions:

O Fuel meter 7335.18

Vessel with a fuel supply of 1800 g (consumption: 0...150 keA)

In order toincreasethe rcsolution and, consequently, the accuracy atsmall measurement

volumes, the fuel supply can be switched over to 900 g or 450
t,respectively.
O Fuel meter 7335.09
Vessel with a fuel supply of 900 g (consumption: 0...75 ke,fi)

br ordertoincreasethe resolution andconsequently, the accuracyatsmall measurement

volumes, the fuel supply can be switched over to 4S0 g or 225
d.

The following measurement procedures are possible:

O Interval-measurernent (start-/stop-nreasurement)
o Individual and multiple measurenent with preselected measuring time
o Individual and multiple measurement with preselected measurement time .

Intermediate results and momentary consumption can be intenogated at any time. ln

case of multiplemeasurements,meanvalue,maximumandmirurn-Jumvaluesis well as
the standard deviation are calculated.

Fuel meter 7335 is suitable for all commercially available petrol and diesel fuels (also with
the addition of an optional amount of alcohoi) as well ai for pure alcohol. The standard
connection elements can be used up to an alcohol content of 15 7o. Beyond this limit, stainless
connection parts are required (see Chapter 3. Options).

Operating Manual 2-1

Basic Operating Principle AVL 733S FuelMeter

Advantages of fuel meter 7335

a Gravimetric measuring principle

The gravimetric measuring principle allows for a directmeasurcment of the fuel mass
consumed. The acquisition of fuel temperature and density which, at volumetric
measurernent procedures, is affected by accuracy-reducing tolerances'is no longer
necessary.

O Vessel solution

Just as the fuel tank, also the measuring vessel is equipped with an engine return line
connection and a venting line and thus provides for a continuous air and vapour bubble
separation in the measuring circuit (engine feed and return line). An additional
separation of bubbles, which would have a negative effect on accuracy and dynamics,
is not required. Bubbles are of course separated from the fuel supply in the measuring
vessel before they would get into the measuring circuit.

O Measuring accuracy of IJI2To

Even very small consumptions can be measured with high accuracy, as a

correspondingly favourable sum consumption can be chosen by increasing the
measuring time (as opposed to flow sensors where measurement errors are added up).

a Unique measuring range

With fuel meter 7335.18, consumptions of 0...150 kgA, in case of special applications up
to 'CIO kg4, can be measured. (In this case, please contact your local AVl-representative.)

O Continuous fuel consumption measurement

The capacity of 1800 g is sufficient for a continuous measurernent of the consumption

of app. 95 % of all passenger cars during all internationally known car-model test
procedures, such as FTP75, ECE etc. On the basis of the measuring principle total
consumption can be determined directly, i.e. without integration, at the end of the cycle.
Following a short filling-up time, the fuel meter will be ready for new measurement
tasks.

a Automatic calibration equipment

According to IS09000, all measuring devices must be supervised at rcgular intervals.

With the automatic calibration equipment, this can be accomplished easily and at low
cost.

Without opening the fuel lines, the measuring accuracy of the fuel meter can be
supervised and a calibration can be carried out. With a Bypass valve (see
Chapter 3. Options) this is possible while the engine is running.

Basic Device and Options AVL 733S Fuel Meter

O Pressurizingmodule (Order No. : TM0730DRA.01 )

Fuels with a high vapour pressure tend to form vapour bubbles even at room
temperature. With the pressurizing module option, pressure in the measuring vessel of
the fuel meter is increased, which largely prevents the formation of vapour bubbles.
Note that, simultaneously, pressure will be increased in the return line.

Pressure regulator module

For certain test tasks it may be required that the fuel is available in the mixture
preparation system with preselected pressure. With the pressure regulator module
option, an overpr€ssure between 0.01 and 3 bar can be selected

Pressure range: OrderNo.:

0.01...0.5 bar TMO73OPRA.01

O Fuel damper (Order No: TM0730KDA.01 )

Especially in the case of single-cylinder engines with unit-injector, pressure shocks mav
affect the consumption rneasurernent. If very high pr,'essure shocks are to be expected,
the fuel damper option should be installed in the retum line.

Due to the gravimetric measuring principle, the fuel meter itself is insensitive to changes in
1 fuel temperature and gaseous portions (bubbles) in the fuel.

J It determines the fuel weight in the measuring vessel with high accuracy and calculates the
consumption from the measuring vessel on the basis of the change in weight. However, in
order todeterrnine the consumption by the engine in an accurate way, it must be ensured

J that the fuel weight in the measuring circuit remains constant.

_i
Operating Manual 4-1
lntegration of the Fuel Meter into the Test Bed AVL 733S FuelMeter

Consequently,

- the fuel temperature in the measuring cirnrit must be constant

the measuring cirtuit must be completely deaerated and the fuel in the measuring
circuit free from bubbles (the gas volume is highly dependent on pressure and
thermal influences)

the geometric volume of the measuring circuit must be constant (avoid thermal or
pressure-dependent expansions)

The magnitude of an error caused by a temperature change is illustrated by the following

example:

O The engine is running with a constant consumption of 3.6ke,h

a Assumed fuel characteristics:

density: p = 0.85 8/.*3, expansion coefficient: cr = 0.001 per t

O Geometric volume V of the measuring circuit 2000 crn3

O With the fuel meter a measurementwith preselected time is carried out (measuring time
20 s).

a Average temperature increase of fuel in the measuring circuit during the measuring
time:

At = 0.2o C
I
Due to the temperature increase the weight of the fuel in the measuring circuit is reduced
by AG.

AG=V.p.o.At=0.34t
-+ During the measuring time, the engine consurnes 20 g, the fuel meter determines
the sum consumption (engtne - weight change in the measuring cirnrit)
20g-0.349=19'668.
This is 1.7 %less than the consumption by the engine

Conclusion:
I
Even minimal changes in temperature in the measuring circuit will cause considerable
differences between consumption from the measuring vessel (measuring result of a fuel
consumption measuring device) and the actual consumption by the engine:

J
_l 4.2 General Guidelines for lnstallation

J
Observe local safety regulations

J (e.g. grounding of fuel lines...)!

I
O
J The fuel line mains and system elements (filter, pumps, heat exchanger) must be
absolutely leakproof and sufficiently resistant to the fuels used.

O Maintain the fuel volume in the measuring circuit as small

_l as possible.

J o use pressure-resistant lines and system components, in order to maintain the geometric
volume at a constant level.

Recommended line material:

J - Copper for commercially available diesel and petrol fuels

1 - Stainless steel for special fuels (M100, ...)

- Teflon hoses encased in metal meshing

I O In order to avoid leakiness, venting problems and local underpressure (danger of vapour

bubble formation), note:
<-

JI - The flow resistance of fuel lines should be as low as possible

- Pipe bends instead of lnee

1
- Avoid cross section changes

- Avoid screwed connections

-r- - If possible, arrange fuel lines so as to be either monotonically increasing or mono-

t tonically decreasing

- In case of contaminated fuels, use fuel filter with an adequate filter surface: for
200 kc,fi at least 500 crnr

- Before installation, fuel lines and systern elements must be rinsed with clean fuel
and, if necessary blorvn with dry compressed air.

_l - System elements (filter, heat exchanger...) must be flown through upwards from
below in order to guarantee a proper venting - do not use elements for which a

j complete deaeration cannot be guaranteed.

T
Operating Manual 4-3

- To enstue a proper deaeration or hansport of vapour bubbles into the measuring

vessel (= foam separator), the fuel should be in constant circulation in the measurin g -
circuit. The fuel flow rate should be between 0.5 and 1 Vs (good middle course
betrveen sufficient bubble transport and low flow resistance). '.
- Avoid line sections without perrnanent flow through (e.g. stub lines to prcssure
gauges or drain valves...) or arrange these elements in a way so as to cause bubbles r
to escape automatically through the lines in which a pernanent flow-through takes
place.

O Avoid changes in fuel temperature in the measuring circuit. T

- Do not lay fuel lines parallel to sources of heat (e.g. exhaust pipes) rl
- Provide for thermal insulation of fuel lines

- Electrically actuated valves and pumps will heat up the fuel; especially in the case
of diesel engines the fuel return temperatue is very high; therefore, it is imperative
-l
-
to install a cooler.

The fuel in the measuring circuit should have the same ternperature as in the suppty
J
line, in order to avoid a change in temperature in the measuring circuit when the
measuring vessel is refilled.
J l

O When you select fuel temperatule and presswe in the measuring circuit, be sure that at
no point the vapour pressure is reached.
r-l
O Service and maintenance I
- It is recommended to install fuel valves on an appropriate spot in order to avoid I
that an unnecessary amount of fuel must be drained, e.g. when the fuel filter is
exchanged

The following mustbe provided as a minimum:

-l
- Fuel valve in the supply line
- Drain valve in the measuring circuit (feed line)
4
- In order to be able to check whether the fuel is free from bubbles, install
shield in the rneasuring circuit.

4.3 Selection of the lnstallation Site

The fuel meter should be the highest spot in the measuring cirtuit. So, a continuous
venting of the fuel system is possible. We recommend a height of app. 0.5 ...1 m above
themixture preparation system. Thereby, underpressure in the feed line willbeavoided
while the backpressure on the outlet of the mixture preparation system will still be low
enough.

Mount the fuel meter on a stable, vibrationless wall. Vibrations rising above t0 Hz
represent no problern For space requirenrent, see Chapter 5. Installation

Fuel meter and test bed pipework must be connected by means of

hoses (see Chapter 3. Options).
I
On the one hand, this will facilitate horizontal and vertical

prevented.

4.7 Configuration of the Measuring Circuit ,

O In order to guarantee a proper deaeration or the tansport of vapour bubbles into the
measuring vessel(= bubble separator), respectively, we recorilnend that a system pump

be used in the measuring circuit.
(
The system pump must be installed in the feed line as close as possible to the fuel meter I*f
outlet.

The pump capacity of the pump must be at least 10 % above the pump capacity of the
backing pump (engine) or'll%o above the maximumconsumptionbytheengine. Atany
t
event, it should not rise considerably above this value, as a large circulating volume will
have a negative effect on the signal-to-noise ratio.

An excess supply of fuel mustbe fed away to the return line through a Bypass, as close
t_
as possible to the engine.

O The engine (especially the diesel engine), but also the systern pump will warm up the

fuel. Therefore, it is imperative to install a heat exchanger (cooler) as close as possible to
the engine rL_
ln order to prcvent changes in t€rnPerature in the measurhg
circuit and, as a result, measurelnent errors, the ruei ternperatures -T
in the measuring cirorit and in the supplv line must be identicai -

r
O At production test beds there is a danger of fuel contamination by the engine. In this
r_
case, we recommend the installation of a fuel filter 60 p in the fuel return line, as close
as possible to the fuel meter,

7.4.9 Accuracy Check

rL--_li
The accuracy check enables a check of the measuring accuracy of the fuel meter at any given
fitling levels between 0 g and overflow threshold minus calibration weight (90 g).

In contrast to the calibration, the sensitivity will not be corrected automatically. However,
a sensitivity correction can be carried out after an accuracy check, whereby the correction
will affect the entire filling level range (i.e. the linearity will not be changed). ?
T
a Observe the warm-up time of the device (30 min).

O Select the filling level, by filling or consunption, at which the accuracy check is to be
carried out.
r
-tI
a Make sure that there is a zero consumption.
7
-.<ttr
With the Bypass valve option the Bypass mode will be activated automatically when the
accruacy check is started. 7

Note that changes in temperature in the measuring circuit (feed and return lines to the -<
engine), e.g. by radiant heat from the engine, will cause changes of the filling level,
whereby a consumption will be simulated.
v

O Start the accuracy check.

After a waiting time of 30 s (standard setting) a Gain Test will be carried out. When
starting with the 733-protocol, this waiting time is not applicable for reasons of
compatibility (total duration of the accuracy check). In this case, ensure that the ::--:: :

rl
I
If the drift is outside the tolerance range, the Gain Test enor will be set and the
Gain Test cycle as well as the accuracy check (or the calibration, respectively)
will be aborted

O Evaluation of the weight difference measured

O If the deviation of the measured weight difference from the calibration weight remains
_''l outside the tolerance range (2 [1,1ooo]), the emcr "accuracy check not passed" will be set.

O Subsequently, the Bypass valve (option) is set back to the same state as before the
_1 calibration.

_l Note:

a The reproducibility of the accuracy check is typically better than 0.5 [triooo]
v
zl O The linearity of a calibrated fuel meter is typically better than 1 [trlooo].

O If the accuracy check shows a rather significant deviation, this is mostly due to the
thermal response of the fuel meter (+200 ppV"c), i.e. a change in temperafure of 10o as
compared with the calibration may already cause a deviation of 2 [l4ooo].

In this case, it is generally sufficient to carry out a sensitivity correction.

The insfantaneous valueVc/nj is calculated from the change of the filling level inside
the measuring vessel during the parameterized differentiating time (i.e. it corresponds
to the effective filling rate during filling). If the instantaneous value does not correspond
to the actual consumption, digital output VALID is set to off. DIL switch 55 selects if the
instantaneous value is output at analog out only if it corresponds to the consumption
(S5 = on) or if it is output at any time (S5 = off).

Le. 55 = on: the value at analog out corresponds to the actual consumption [tg,l'] UALID

The intermediafe /esurf is the average consumption [k&i] or the quantity consumed [g]
since Start (,'GATE" off -r signal-edge on).

The /afesf measurement result is the average consumption [te,fi] or the quanitv

AIYIL 733s FuerMeter Maintenance

-, 14. Maintenance
14.1 General
The fuel meter 7335 is basically maintenance-free. However, it is recommended to check the
accuracy of the fuel meter in regular intervals - see Chapter 7.4.9.

I The maintenance instmctions indicated below primarily serve to avoid, to a large extent,
unexpected failures of the measuring device.
-
14.2 Solenoid Valve
-
The plunger-seal consists of high-quality sealing material KALREZ), which ensues
resistance for all fuels.
I
However, leakages nury occur when dirt particles (fine chips, etc.) deform the sealing
material at the seat; in addition, a large number of switching cycles will cause a local
"hardening" of the seal and, consequently, leakages.
-
Indicators of a defective plunger:

- No consumption or filling with simultaneous mass increase in the measuring vessel

1 - Overfilling the measuring vessel

Recommended exchange interval: once Per year

I.
Order-No.: MM0389

14.3 Damping Oil

!

The damping oil is a fully synthetic oil whose viscosity ensures a stable damping
characteristic.

Indicators for old damping oil: insufficient reproducibility of results at measurements or the
accuracy check

I Exchanging the damping oil:

- Fully remove old damping oil (draw off with syringe)

- - Fill in new damping oil (see also Chapter 6.2)

Recommended exchange interval: once per year

Order-No.: 801042

I
t
Maintenance AVL 733S FuelMeter

14.4 Spring Elements

Due to highest demands on the spring elernents with regard to linearity, freedom from
hysteresis and working accuracy, spring elements, bending spring and vessel suspension
are made of high-quality, but not stainless spring steel.

It is recommended to re-preserve the tr,vo springs, in the insalled position, every 2 years.

Oils with
a vaseline-base are rather appropriate preservatives, as e.g. SHELL ENSIS FLUID
G which are to be applied by means of a brush.
