Topic: Test 1: Amohdtaib@ukm - Edu.my

This document provides information for a foundation engineering test including: 1) Questions about classifying soil types and calculating unit weight and effective stress. 2) Questions asking to define acronyms and advise on a foundation problem without soil investigation. 3) Questions explaining Terzaghi's bearing capacity theory, deriving the equation, and calculating ultimate bearing capacity and maximum column load for a given footing.

Topic: Test 1

Answer all questions. This is an open book test. You are not allowed to discuss. Tuhan Maha
Mengetahui.

Please submit your answers in PDF file to UKMFolio. Deadline is stated in UKMFolio.

Late submission can be sent via email to [email protected], 50% marks will be deducted.

1. a) By using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, determine
the following soil group:

i. A uniform sand
ii. A high plastic clay
iii. A well-graded sand with10 % fines
iv. A well-graded gravel with10 % fines

(2 marks)

b) Figure 1 shows an abandoned man-made lake. The water content is 20% with the specific
gravity of 2.65. A team of engineers decided to treat the lake for development and they
needed to carry out soil investigation. As one of the engineers, determine the unit
weight of the soil and what would be the effective stress at 4.5 m from the water surface.

2. a) Give the full name of the following acronyms.

v. SPT
vi. CPT
vii. PMT
viii. DMT
ix. RQD

(2.5 marks)
b) Mr Trump called you and said that there is a foundation problem at the White House
that led to cracks in the building. He mentioned that he does not want to spend any
money on soil investigation and seek your advice on how to rectify the problem. How
would you talk to him about this? Now, be nice to him!

(2.5 marks)

3. a) Explain and derive Terzaghi’s bearing capacity theory. Include all bearing capacity
factors in the equation.

(2.5 marks)

b) Determine the ultimate bearing capacity for the following footing:

Radius = 0.75 m
Depth of foundation = 1.10 m
Effective cohesion = 11 kN/m2
Angle of friction = 24°
Unit weight of soil = 17 kN/m3
Factor of safety: 3.0

Find the maximum column load that for the foundation.
