colonialism in Filipino society. Most of his works were translated in different
languages including Dutch, Indonesian and Russian. One of the biggest influences
on F. Sionil was his mother, who supported his reading and even bought him
books. When he was young he learned to write and read and when he reached
elementary school his teacher was surprised that what he was reading was a strange
level like Jose Rizal's novel. He studied at the University of Santo Tomas but
dropped out and just continued writing and journalism in Manila. Just a few years
later he had many literary and journalistic publications and he even joined an
international association of writers. He received many awards, one of his most
popular novels was The Pretenders. Due to his published novels many couples and
folks became attentive to the reality and lots of lives and beliefs were changed in
each family. He is one in every of the admired authors of other writers, even the
authors in other countries idolize him even he's underrated, they idolized him
because his works are authentic whether they are Filipino or English.
The Waywaya story written by F. Sionil is tainted by prehispanic society. He wrote
this to show that justice and morality should continue to be pursued for those who
have been victims of violence. This story is called Waywaya because this is the
name of the woman in this story and almost everyone revolves around her. It
started with a rival tribe living near a river, the Daya and the Laud. Dayaw had two
brothers he wanted to cross the river and when he did this he thought it was the
best of all. Dayaw is fond of poetry and singing. He also can fight and he has
courage like most of the other warriors. One day while they were traveling with the
rest of his tribe across the river. When they reached the river they were very thirsty
and very hungry, they saw tall reeds and there they sharpened their knives and
prepared tobacco which they treated after they were circumcised. When they
reached the river, on a lawn near the river he saw a beautiful woman, Her stomach
was flat and below the patch of pubic hair, her legs were supple well-shaped. he
stooped and untied the thongs of her leather sandals then she walked nimbly into
the water, shivering initially as she tested it along with her toe. Then she plunged
and splashed about. She dived to the shallow depths within the clear water, he
could follow her lissome figure turning, then surfacing to float on her back, in
order that her breasts were shiny with water and sun. While Waywaya was doing
the things she was supposed to do she did not know that Dayaw was watching her
and seeing her.
