Lesson Plan 1 - Polygons

This lesson plan focuses on teaching 3rd grade students about 2D polygons. Students will learn what polygons are, be introduced to different types of regular and irregular polygons including triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. They will practice sorting polygons based on the number of sides and describing shapes. Formative assessments will evaluate students' understanding of polygons and describing shapes by their number of sides.

Subject: Math Grade: 3 Teacher: Alexis Breckenridge

Unit: Geometry

2D Shapes
Lesson 1: Date: Mar. 15, 2021 Length: 75 mins.
- Polygons
Lesson Overview:
This lesson will focus on learning what polygons are. Students will learn about different types of
regular and irregular polygons. Students will work to sort different polygons based on the
number of sides they have. We will be talking about triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons,
hexagons, and octagons. Students will work to apply their understanding of how to sort
polygons based on the number of sides they have. We will conclude the lesson by review what a
polygon is and how to describe shapes.
Alberta Program of Study:
GLO: Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2D shapes and analyze the relationships
among them.
SLO 6: Sort 2D shapes and 3D objects, using two attributes, and explain the sorting rule.
SLO 8: Describe, compare and construct 2D shapes, including:
• Triangles
• Squares
• Rectangles
• Circles
GLO: Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects according to the shape of the faces and the
number of edges and vertices.
SLO 7: Sort regular and irregular polygons, including:
• Triangles
• Quadrilaterals
• Pentagons
• Hexagons
• Octagons
according to the number of sides.
Critical Questions: Lesson Guiding Questions:
• How can describe the characteristics • What is a polygon?
of 2-D shapes and 3-D objects? • How can I tell if a shape is a polygon?
• How can I describe a shape based on the
number of sides it has?
• How many sides does a
triangle/quadrilateral/pentagon/hexagon
/octagon have?

Resources: Materials and Equipment:

• Math Makes Sense • Activity Sheets
• Math Focus • Pencils and Erasers
• https://toytheater.com/clock/ • Epson Board
• Virtual Sheet
• Computer
• Whiteboard
• Whiteboard Markers

Formative Assessments: Summative Assessments:

• Students will be assessed on their • N/A
understanding of what a polygon is.
Students will also be assessed on
their understanding of how to
describe shapes based on the number
of sides they have.
Lesson Procedures:
Introduction: (15 min.) Notes:
− Inform students we are going to being learning about
geometry
− Ask if anyone thinks they can tell us what geometry is
− Ask students If they know what a polygon is
− Inform students that a polygon is a shape with only
straight sides that all connect
− Draw different shapes on the board and inform students
that they are all polygons
− Using the shapes drawn on the board explain how the
sides are straight and all connect
− Draw examples of shapes that are not polygons
− Describe why the shapes are not polygons
− Erase the board

Body: (53 min.) Notes:

− Draw a shape on the board and ask students if it is a
polygon or not
− Explain why the shape is or is not a polygon
− Provide each student with a blank reference sheet
− Use the Epson Board to fill in each area of the chart
together as a class
− Provide students will several examples of triangles,
quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and octagons
− As shapes are drawn number the side to aid students
understanding of how to count them
− Allow students to draw their own shapes as examples
on the whiteboard
− Show students the activity sheets they will be working
on
− Explain how to approach the problems
− Allow students to work independently

Differentiation: Notes:
− Students who struggle with reading and writing will get
a chart that is partially filled in.
− Students who struggle with processing will be given
support to understand how to approach the worksheet

Consolidation Learning/Closure: (5 min.) Notes:

− Ask students if they find this easy or difficult
− Ask students to define what a polygon is
− Draw shapes on the board and pull popsicle sticks to ask
students if the shape is a polygon or not
− Ask another student if it is a triangle, quadrilateral,
polygon, hexagon, or octagon

Clean-up: (2 min.) Notes:

− Ask students to put unfinished work in their folders
− Ask students to hand in work that is complete
− Ask students to put their folders away and clean off
their desks
