B62 0020 (Rev. E 2008.07) EN - PLASTIC MATERIALS AND THERMOSETTING CONVENTIONAL DESIGNATIONS

This document provides standardized abbreviations for plastic, thermosetting, and stiffening materials used in vehicle parts marking for recirculation purposes. It includes an alphabetical list of abbreviated designations for homopolymers, copolymers, alloys, and mixtures. Reference documents include ISO standards for plastic symbols and abbreviations. The purpose is to prevent multiple symbols for the same material and avoid interpretation issues.

1.OBJECT AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

The present standard has the aim of providing uniform symbols relating to the plastics, the oven loads and
materials of stiffener, in particular for marking of parts in the forecast of their recirculation.
Its goal is to prevent the appearance of more than one symbol for a given plastic and to avoid any interpretation.
The materials of each of the two clusters (thermoplastic, thermosetting) are classified by family in such way that to
each family a whole of products can correspond whose physical and chemical characteristics are sufficiently
defined to allow the choice for a given use of them.
Note: the present standard is in agreement with standards NF IN ISO 1043-1 (2002), NF IN ISO 1043-2 (2002),
NF IN ISO 18064 (2005) in the terms most frequently used and in conformity with the appendix has standard
NF IN ISO 1043-1 for the narrower terms.

(1) These materials can be more completely defined by their chemical symbol, for example, or of the additional
symbols defined in the International standard concerned. In the case of metals (M) the precision of the type of
metal by its chemical symbol is essential.
(2) The mineral fillers should be designees more precisely if a symbol exists, for example “E”, “P”.
